Hwy 9-ers: Pucker Up

The orange plastic fences have been up for a while, and today the electric
signs make it official: the re-configuration of the 9/upper 236
intersection begins on Monday. This, combined with the apparently-stalled
work on the top hairpin on the Saratoga side, will make for an
entertaining runup to the rainy season for us Highway 9 commuters.

Speaking of the latter "construction" site -- I don't think a pebble has
been moved there in at least a month. Maybe we should start a pool on
when CalTrans remembers that the job is still active.

that corner at 60 [1].

[1] Actual fact is that I wouldn't routinely take it at half of
that speed and, near the end of my driving daze, I'd just go
straight onto 236. WIMP ... I am.

If they're still going with last year's plan, yes: it will be turned into
an all-right-angles 4-way stop. The sweeping curve will be eliminated.

The real problem was the people who couldn't take that corner at
whatever speed they were making, and didn't abort out to 236. The
grove of redwoods collected quite a few bruises, and of course there
have been quite a few fatalities for such a simple curve.

This whole project pisses me off, though. Clearly they think the stop
sign is going to be more dangerous than the curve was, since the stop
sign will be much better marked.

The question that CalTrans has never answered is this: What happens if
the accident rate increases after the change?

I came back over 9 for the first time in a while today, and they sure
seem to be making more of a production of it than they need to.

Plenty of lights. Cameras not in evidence, but you never know. It
wouldn't surprise me to find cameras in the trees. Gotta watch out
for terrorists.

It's going to be good for Revenue Enhancement, too. Folks going up
the hill are going to get in the habit of not reslly stopping before
turning right. Folks comming down the hill intending on using 236
are going to tend to just continue without stopping (some by force
of habit). So those cameras in the trees can be verrry useful.

I agree. If we're going to have an all-seeing all-knowing police
surveillance state, we might as well have cameras and microphones
*everywhere* -- and running Windows Lite so the recorded information
will be secured as best as is humanly possible.
