I am a huge fan of both Trent and Marilyn, and any true fan of theirs
must also be a fan of Charlie. Yeah, that's right. The Father.
I got to see NIN in Oakland, September 2008. It was sooooooo incredible,
watching the holographic video screen under the influence of ten hits of
LSD and three hits of ecstasy. So intense that I had to run to the
bathroom and blow chunks in the middle of "God-Given." After the concert
I caught the train and spent the night wandering aimlessly around San
Francisco, still in awe of what I had seen and heard.
Earlier that year in February I had seen Marilyn Manson at the Warfield
theater on Market Street in San Francisco. Again, acid and ecstasy and
all night wandering around the most beautiful city on earth -- so much
fun! The Warfield is the theater that Marilyn Manson opened for NIN in
April 1994. A smaller theater, with seats arranged vertically so that
every seat has a good closeup view of the stage. Do not drink from their
water fountain, though -- the security guard refused to let me carry a
cup of water in because it was yellow-brown! Yuk!
Anyway, after the show Marilyn and Trent were in town for a few days, and
Marilyn gets a call inviting him to meet with Anton LaVey at the Black
House on 6114 California Street at 1am. LaVey tells Manson how much he
admires him and his satanic-ness, and offers to ordain him as a minister
of the Church of Satan, and Brian Warner accepts. LaVey refused to call
him "Marilyn" because of his personal relationship with Marilyn Monroe
before she died, but said he understood the logic and power of the
Marilyn Manson name.
Manson's satanic ordination gave him the notoriety that a proper rock
star needs. As a result, Marilyn was dumped from the ticket at the Delta
Arena in Salt Lake City in October 1994. Trent brought him out as a
special guest, and Marilyn's performance consisted of reciting "He loves
me, he loves me not..." as he tore pages out of a Book of Mormon. Then
they made a run for the tour bus and escaped, and the Stepford Wives of
Utah still haven't recovered from the trauma.
Trent and Marilyn had a falling out some time ago, for reasons I do not
know. Trent said he gave up touring so he could work on other stuff like
film scores, winning an Academy and Grammy award for his work on "The
Social Network" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
I still remain Marilyn's Number One Fan, though I worry about how his
midlife crisis is affecting his work. We're almost the same age, so I
know how it feels when twenty years of fast living catches up with the
teenage rebel in a man's body. But he will always be my personal
Antichrist Superstar forever and ever, because I'm his Number One Fan!
