Restaurants near SFO
(null)
(he leaves at 1 am), but sitting in traffic for an hour is a
suboptimal use of our time. Does anyone have recommendations
not far from the airport?

You can try Gullivers, they have pretty good prime rib.
There's also Pisces in Burlingame. Seafood. Run by the same people who
run Aqua.
There's also the Elephant Bar, which is very popular for reasons I can't
quite figure out. I think it's because people like eating in a place
called "The Elephant Bar."
And, there's a 24 hour Ihop just down Airport road in SSF.

Could very well be. Their website reeks of slick marketing.

Thanks for the tips. Even though he likely won't find one in Australia,
his next stop after Manila, I think IHOP is not on the list. I know sushi
would be welcomed with glad cries, so Pisces could be useful.

Almost next door to the airport in Millbrae are both Hong Kong Flower
Lounge and Fook Yuen, both Hong Kong-style Chinese restaurants. Of the
two, my vote goes to Fook Yuen for food, but neither will win any prizes
for ambience. Since it looks like you'll be dining too late for dim
sum, you'd be ordering from their menu, which is Cantonese leaning
heavily toward seafood. It would certainly give your visitor a taste of
one of the cuisines SF is renowned for.

Saw that, but some folks aren't fond of seafood, ergo the sushi reference.
It's the sort of thing where distance makes a real difference; I wasn't
all that fussed about it either until I moved to the Left Coast.

I had lunch at the Basque Cultural Center's restaurant last week. They made
a darn good lamb shank and the cauliflower soup du jour was something, as
well.
They're tucked away in a residential neighborhood in South San Francisco,
not too far off the beaten trail.

If it weren't so crowded, we'd eat there semi-regularly. They serve
decent food for a chain restaurant, and they have a nice view of planes
landing. More to the point from my POV, their menu has some items not
readily available elsewhere, particularly the short ribs. All in all,
if you need to satisfy a group of picky eaters, it definitely is a good
choice because of the variety combined with sufficient quality. The
only real problem is the noise, plus occasional lacking service.

I'll second this; Basque Cultural Center is one of my favorites. But
you probably don't want to go there on tight timing or if you get lost
easily. (Fortunately, it's slightly easier to get there from 101 than
280.)

By coincidence I went to Fook Yuen for the first time yesterday. It
was for lunch and we mixed dim sum and the lunch menu. Had two dishes I
had never tried before-a dim sum dish of shrimp with chives and a lunch
dish of orange pork chops. Everything was great.

I tried it for the first time just this week myself and was
disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high given all
the praise it has received in this group.
But while the rack of lamb was was good quality lamb prepared
to the right amount of doneness and the potato leek soup was
very leeky and very generously portioned, the rest of the meal
was kind of dull to the point of feeling like institutional food.
And the service was SLOW.
Very hearty food at terrifically reasonable prices. Not a bad thing
at that. But I had expected more given everything I'd read and didn't
find it there.

but he moved to Oz with the new wife as she wanted to be closer

Kincaids in Burlingame is 5-10 minutes drive time from SFO:
Take the frontage roads (S. MacDonnell Road to Old Bayshore Highway to
Airport Blvd) on the east side of 101 and avoid the rush hour traffic
on 101. You will go past Maxs and Elephant Bar en route, really
there's no reason to stop there when Kincaids is just a few minutes
further down the road and much nicer.
If you want to minimize travel time to zero, the restaurants in the
International terminal are much better than your typical airport fare
and just a few minute's walk from the domestic terminal.

I suggest you not take anyone to Max's unless you can personally
vouch for it yourself. It provokes quite a bit of negative reaction
here. On the other hand, if your guest is into Chinese food, Fok Yuen
(already mentioned) is not only convenient, but one of the best Bay Area
Chinese restaurants south of SF. (Pisces is still on my list to try,
but it's received a number of favorable reactions here, and I would
probably choose it if an oriental choice were disfavored.)

Yes, the famous corner Millbrae Ave. at El Camino. Adding another
endorsement to these here (incl. Al Eisner's), I heard about Fook Yuen
several years ago when out of the area, and a friend who traveled to the Bay
Area regularly on business endorsed this place -- "right near the Airport,"
and they'd stopped there often for very good dim sum on the way to a 'plane,
in less time than you could eat in one of the airport concessions. I think
I've seen it a little fuller and slower than I'd like if I had a plane to
catch, but on the other hand I've usually been there (and HKFL) at popular
weekend times.

At the Milbrae Ave. exit (just south of SFO):
Already mentioned: Fook Yuen or Hong Kong Flower Lounge. I think the
ambience of HKFL is much nicer. I took my dad there once several years
ago and he asked "why haven't you taken me here before, it's nice".
Further south, on the frontage road, just before the next exit:
Max's Opera Cafe (well, they USED to sing opera there, don't know if
they still do). Some of the comments here have been whether it's a bit
over priced or not... for one dinner out with a friend, don't worry
about that. They've got good corned beef / pastrami sandwiches (it's
not important for this meal whether they're as good as you get in NY or
not!). I've taken many friends there on the way to the airport or with
a few hour layover... wide selection of food.
On Broadway in Burlingame (that's the exit just south of Milbrae):
A good sushi bar (not boats!) is "Jun".
For very good prime rib: Broadway Prime. It's a clone of SF's House of
Prime Rib.
Further south in downtown Burlingame you'll find: Ecco, Il Fornio.
