December 13, 2005--Archaeologists today revealed the final section of
the earliest
known Maya mural ever found, saying that the find upends everything
they
thought they knew about the origins of Maya art, writing, and rule.
The painting was the last wall of a room-size mural to be excavated.
The site was discovered in 2001 at the ancient Maya city of San Bartolo

in the lowlands of northeastern Guatemala.
"It is really breathtaking how beautiful this is," said William
Saturno,
an archaeologist with the University of New Hampshire and the
Harvard Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
The mural tells the story of creation, the mythology of kingship,
and the divine right of a king, according to Saturno, who made
the find and leads the excavation.
The painting dates to 100 B.C., proving that stories of creation
and kings--and the use of elaborate art and writing to tell
them--were well established more than 2,000 years ago,
700 years earlier than previously believed.
"In that way it really is like you didn't know the
Renaissance ever happened--you have no knowledge
that anyone ever painted anything in Florence in the
16th century, then all of sudden you see a

New Instanton Effects in String Theory

We describe a new class of instanton effects in string
compactifications that preserve only N=1 supersymmetry
in four dimensions. As is well-known, worldsheet or
brane instantons in such a background can sometimes
contribute to an effective superpotential for the moduli
of the compactification. We generalize this phenomenon by
showing that such instantons can also contribute to new
multi-fermion and higher-derivative F-terms in the
low-energy effective action. We consider in most detail
the example of heterotic compactification on a Calabi-Yau
threefold X with gauge bundle V, in which case we study
worldsheet instanton effects that deform the complex
structure of the moduli space associated to X and V.
We also give new, slightly more economical derivations of
some previous results about worldsheet instantons in
Type IIA Calabi-Yau compactifications.

Partial Ingredients for DNA and Protein Found Around Star

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has discovered some
of life's most basic ingredients in the dust swirling
around a young star. The ingredients -- gaseous
precursors to DNA and protein -- were detected in
the star's terrestrial planet zone, a region where
rocky planets such as Earth are thought to be born.

The findings represent the first time that these gases,
called acetylene and hydrogen cyanide, have been
found in a terrestrial planet zone outside of our own.

"This infant system might look a lot like ours did billions
of years ago, before life arose on Earth," said Fred Lahuis
of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands and the Dutch
space research institute called SRON. Lahuis is lead
author of a paper to be published in the Jan. 10 issue
of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Lahuis and his colleagues spotted the organic, or
carbon-containing, gases around a star called IRS 46.
The star is in the Ophiuchus (pronounced OFF-ee-YOO-kuss),
or "snake carrier," constellation about 375 light-years from
Earth. This constellation harbors a huge cloud of gas and
dust in the process of a major stellar baby boom. Like most
of the young stars here and elsewhere, IRS 46 is circled by
a flat disk of spinning gas and dust that might ultimately
clump together to form planets.

When the astronomers probed this star's disk with Spitzer's
powerful infrared spectrometer instrument, they were
surprised to find the molecular "barcodes" of large amounts
of acetylene and hydrogen cyanide gases, as well as carbon
dioxide gas. The team observed 100 similar young stars,
but only one, IRS 46, showed unambiguous signs of
the organic mix.

us to peer into it," said Lahuis.

Those who believe that the nuclear black market chain
run by Dr AQ Khan has been shut down could be in for
greater shocks in the future. First, it will be folly
to believe that Dr AQ Khan was alone in his venture
of buying and selling nuclear technology and materials
across the world.

Howsoever crafty and greedy he might have been,
he could not have succeeded in setting up any
network without State support which, in Pakistan,
means the Army, and an entire chain of traders,
amenable politicians and bureaucrats spread throughout
the Western world. It is now well-known that AQ Khan
had set up his liaison men, contacts and agents in
the US, UK, erstwhile W. Germany, France, the Netherlands
and other European countries, West Asia and Malaysia.
Several shell companies were floated to help the network
in smuggling nuclear materials and technology. There have
been no attempts to dismantle these links in the global
nuclear black market chain.

Three intelligence reports, by different entities in
the past one year, conclusively establish that, even
though AQ Khan has been disabled, his clandestine
network of nuclear traders is active. In May 2004,
Switzerland's Annual report on national security
revealed that the Khan network had twice tried to
acquire Russian nuclear technology through a Dutch
and a Swiss firm. The report said various that front
companies for the Khan Research Laboratories made
attempts to procure 120 tons of Russian aluminium
tubes for enriching uranium.

Last year, the British intelligence agency, MI5, compiled
a list of 360 companies operating in different countries,
involved in the clandestine nuclear trade. Significantly,
the Pakistan High Commission in London is high on the list.
The 17-page document titled Companies and Organisations of
Proliferation Concern identified 96 Pakistani organisations
and government bodies involved in this clandestine trade.
The Pakistan High Commission was kept under surveillance
when the intelligence agencies discovered the involvement
of the diplomatic staff.

Another British intelligence estimate revealed early this
month accused Pakistan, Iran and Syria of buying technology
and chemicals required for enriching uranium. The document,
belying Pakistan's claims of dismantling the Khan network
in February 2004, pointed out that "since the beginning of
2004 extensive procurement efforts for the Pakistan nuclear
sector have been registered." The document said the
quantity and range of equipment and materials bought
clearly pointed out that a significant amount was
meant for resale.

Within Pakistan too, there are quite a few clues.
Two individuals, if questioned, can reveal the extent
of the Khan network and the people involved in the deals,
both within the country and outside. Humayun Khan is one
of them. He runs a firm, Pakland PME (2nd Floor, Abbas Centre,
87-W, Blue Area Islamabad-44000) and is a known agent of the
Pakistan Army. Some of the emails seized from an Israeli
businessman, Asher Karni, at Denver airport in January 2004
reveal that Khan has been involved in buying not only
Sidewinder missiles and infra-red sensors for the
missiles from Lockheed Martin Naval Systems, but also
nuclear materials. Humayun Khan was not questioned.

Similar is the case of Aizaz Jaffri, a prominent businessman
based in Islamabad. He owns (until the Khan scandal broke out)
Hot Shots, a bowling alley in Islamabad and a mall complex
besides scores of business establishments which, reports in
the Pakistan media said, were actually owned by Khan.
Jaffri used to work for Pakistan's National Development
Corporation, a state enterprise, before he joined Khan's
network and began acting as a front man for dozens of
businesses established by Khan--he serves as the managing
director of the Best Western Hotel in Islamabad, and runs
dozens of restaurants and hotels either partially or fully
owned by Khan.

Jaffri is also tied to Khan's activities in Dubai where,
reports said, could have been laundering the proceeds of
Khan's Black Network. Between November and December 2003,
when Khan was being questioned and his associates detained.
Jaffri made three trips to Dubai, possibly, as investigators
suspect, to shut down the financial structure that he ran
for Khan. Jaffri reportedly flew to Iran after three
employees of the KRL were detained for questioning in
December 2003. Officials suspect that Jaffri's brief
was to find out how much the Iranians had told the
IAEA officials about Pakistan's involvement in their
nuclear weapons programme. As for Dawood, he runs an
extensive network in Dubai, which has often been used
by Pakistan's intelligence agencies as a safe conduit
for illegal arms purchases and drug sales. There are
reports of the involvement of a bullion king, a big
dealer in gold and jewellery, and a major player in
the stock exchange working as conduits for the
Khan network.

as the only divinities. To achieve this goal they held Knowledge
prisoner,
so that she could not return to the bosom of God [see above
definition.]."

The angels subjected Knowledge to a thousand outrages, and succeeded in

enclosing her in a woman's body. Since then, down through the centuries

she passes from body to body as a woman, devoured by an insatiable
curiosity
concerning the emanations and the power of the aeons, seeking to pierce
their
mystery and so return to the bosom of God [see above definition.].

[The] COSMIC CUBE represents One Pleuroma. Each Pleuroma constitutes 28

aeons. The last lap of "Outer Knowledge" on Her return to Source
(+1)+(-1) =O takes place through the 13th Cube. The "Black Cube" at
Mecca is the Islamic version of the Valentinian theme. The "Ark of the
Covenant" is the Hebrew reflection.

The antics of the Mythological / Archetypal "Gods" [see above
definition.]
prancing through the aeons of "Outer Knowledge", or "Outer Darkness"
supply
a wealth of variations on this theme. The following quote is from the
series
"U.F.O's AND EXTRA TERRESTRIALS" which originates in Paris, France.

Variations on a Theme:

As the point of departure, there is God [see above definition.] or the
First
Principle. The first pair of eons (Adam and Eve) emanate from Him, and
they
engender a second pair, and so on, in line with the imagination of each
of the
theoreticians. These eons constitute the pleroma or the fullness of the

spiritual universe of the eons.

This pleroma was a world in which perfect harmony reigned until the day

when an eon sowed discord therein. Ignoring the duties imposed upon him

by his rank, he deviated.

But why did he deviate and what was the nature of this deviation?
GNOSTIC authors, who are legion, give a variety of answers to
these questions. Some of them say that the eon sinned by pride, others
say by ignorance. The deviation consisted either in believing himself
to
be the most powerful of the eons, or in desiring to know that which was

above his reach. (Aeon 666).

The sinner was immediately expelled from the pleroma. The"deviationist"

eon was thrown into the intermediary world which, still by the process
of successive emanations, was peopled by a multitude of eons. Their
number and organization differ from one Gnostic system construct
toanother.

Whatever may be the configuration of this intermediary world, the eons
constituting it, although distant from the First Principle, contain in
themselves a sufficiency of divine substance to function as demi-Gods
[see
above definition.] or demiurges, that is to say, as the creator of the
terrestrial
world. But this world, engendered by the highly imperfect eons can only
be
imperfect itself and tinged with evil. Such is the process by which
creation can
start from a perfect God [see above definition.], and without too much
incoherence,
result in an evil world.

(W: Modern science calls this function "entropy." Indigenous
beliefs - such as the Hopi prophecies - mirror the same concept.)

And lastly, a saviour eon will come to accomplish redemption and to
re-establish peace and harmony throughout the three superimposed
worlds.

But, in His Infinite Kingdom, God [see above definition.] was lonely.
According to Saint Hippolytus, at the beginning of the third century,
in his
Philosophoumena "Since he was potent, he wished to engender that which
he had in himself of the most beautiful and the most perfect, and to
exterioze it, for he did not like aloneness. He was all love. But, Love

needs a Beloved to love."

Proceeding by emanation, the unengendered Father gave birth to
Nos and Aletheia. Mind and Truth. From this first syzygy (or pair
of opposites) emanated all the eons who were to populate the pleroma.
First of all, Logos and Zoe, the Word and the Life, a couple which, in
turn,
engendered Anthropos and Ecclesia, Man and Church. These six first eons

constituted the superior element.

But the chain kept on. Mind and Truth, to render glory to God [see
above
definition.],emanated ten eons, the Decade. The couple, Logos and Zoe,

for its part,gave life to twelve eons, the Dodecade.

Hence the pleroma comprises twenty-eight eons. These latter are less
and
less perfect to the extent that they are distanct from the Propator.
That makes a striking analogy with the principle of the celestial
hierarchy. Only Love and Truth had knowledge of the Father and could
transmit this knowledge to the lesser eons.

The eon Sophia, Wisdom, has her place in the lowest degree of the
Dodecade. She was devoured by an insatiable curiosity concerning the
phenomena of emanations and the power of the eons who are placed
above her, she seeks to pierce their mystery. According to the version
given in the Pistis Sophia, "It then came about that Sophia was in the
THIRTEENTH EON. She looked on High, she saw the light of the Veil of
the Treasure of Light and she wished to go to that place, but she could

not go there. She ceased to perform the mystery of the thirteenth eon,
that is to say, she ceased to assume the functions of her rank. But she

sang a hymn to the light from on High." Immediately, the Archons, who
belonged in the twelve lower eons, those of the intermediary world,
began to hate Sophia, she had sought to climb on High, and be superior

to them all. "And the great Tridynamos (Triple Power, or Triply
Powerful), Arrogance, that is to say the third Triplynamos which is
in the thirteen eon," seeing the wrath of the Archons of the twelve
eons, joined in with them in order to torment Sophia, for he too was
mightily wroth against the impudence of Sophia, and all the more so in
that he was an ambitious spirit, seeking to dominate the whole of the
thirteenth eon.

The story of Sophia is the story of our own soul.
"Her Substance was Cast into the Chaos."

In order to punish Sophia, Arrogance caused to be emanated out of
himself "a great virtue with the face of a lion and, from the matter
that was in him, he emanated a host of other hylic emanations of
greatest violence and he dispatched them to the lower planes in those
places dependent on Chaos, in order that they might lie in wait to trap

Sophia (our soul), and divest her of the virtue that was in her...
Thus it
followed, upon the order of the First Order, that this great Arrogance
of
Tridynamos... pursued Sophia in the thirteenth eon to
cause her to look down at the lower parts, so that she might see there
its Power of light, that which has a lion's face, and so that she might

desire it that she might go to this place, and that she might there be
bereft of the light which was in her."

And indeed, Sophia did look downward. She saw the Power of light which
Arrogance had cast there, and that misled her. She believed it was the
light she had seen on High, in the Veil of the Treasure of the Light.
And then she said to herself, "I shall go to that place without my
spouse, in order that I may carry away the light, and that out of it I
may create eons of light, so that I may go to the light of Lights, that

which is in the High Places of Heights."

Thereupon Sophia left the place that was hers and went down into
the premises of Chaos. There she approached the great Power of Light
with
the face of a lion, in order to engulf it; alas, it was the contrary
which tookplace. For "all the hylic emanations of Arrogance swarmed
about her, and this great Power of Light with a lion's face swallowed
up
all the Powers of Light which were in Sophia, it purified her light, it

swallowed it down; and as for the matter within her, it was cast into
Chaos. She became an Archon with a lion's face, in Chaos, having one
half of fire and the other half of shadows."

And there we find the unfortunate Sophia, weeping and wailing in Chaos.

She had become weak, having lost her light, and could do no other than
to submit to the persecutions of the hylic virtues emitted by the
Arrogant One.

The world of the eons, envious, jealous, vindicative and quarrelsome,
is,
as we see, quite different from that of the celestial hierarchy in
which
prevail only purity, perfection and harmony.

Desire Beyond Reason

But there is a variant account of the deviation of Sophia. Impelled
by the irrational desire to imitate the Propator, she wished to
engender
by herself. But since she did not have the same faculties as God [see
above
definition.], she succeeded only in producing a stunted, half - formed
being,
the fruit of her sin of pride.

At the sight of this misshapen being, the eons of the pleroma were
panic
stricken. Saint Hippolytus tells us, in Philosophoumena, that,
trembling
with fear of becoming generators of similar "defectives," they
implored
God [see above definition.] to come to the aid of Sophia, inconsolable
at
having given birth to this monstrous creature.

In His goodness, God [see above definition.] heard their prayer. He
assigned
this mission to Nos and Aletheia, Mind and Truth. They immediately
produced
a new syzygy, Christ and the Holy spirit. Christ cast out of the
pleroma the
misconception of Sophia, called Outer Knowledge, and he gave it the
form it
had lacked. [Gee, I wonder if Pope Ratzinger knows this stuff? --MT]
Outer Knowledge henceforward was to be found in the Ogdoad, the first
heaven
of the intermediate world.

Desirous of preventing forever the return of Outer Knowledge into the
pleroma.
God [see above definition.] put forth a new eon who bore a triple name:
Horos
(Limit), Stauros (Barrier), and Methocheus (Participant) because he
participates,
at one and the same time, in the pleroma and in the intermediary world.
When their
mission was accomplished, Christ and the Holy Spirit returned to the
upper world.
The eons regained their serenity and wished to show their gratitude to
God [see
above definition.]. All together, they concerted to emit the best of
their essences,
and thereby engendered the eon Jesus.

Alone and abandoned, Outer Knowledge was terrified. She aspired
desperately toward the pleroma. She prayed and she lamented. Moved by
her distress, the eons sent Jesus, the shared creation of the pleroma,
into the Odgoad, to marry Outer Wisdom and appease her suffering. The
misfortunate Outer Knowledge was the victim of three evils: shame, fear

and anxiety. Jesus transformed them into eternal essences. These
essences
then became demiurges and peopled the intermediary world with a host of

eons, who advanced from heaven to heaven.

Quite naturally, from emanation to emanation, from heaven to heaven,
the
eons become always less perfect. The eons of the lowest heaven, the
imperfect ones, are the demiurges of the terrestrial world. The
demiurge
of the psychic essence gives man his soul. The demiurge of the hylic
essence, the demon, gives him his body, his vile and perishable matter.

This intermediary world, like the pleroma, is located somewhere in the
cosmos.
Basilides placed it between the kingdom of God [see above definition.]
and
the Moon. But since the localization is more or less a matter of
fantasy, its
exactitudeis of no importance. What is important is that the eons
should
be defined as "EXTRA TERRESTRIALS"

The composition of the intermediary world of the followers of
Valentinus is of such complexity, that, compared to it, the
heavenly hierarchy of the angels seems to be of a simplicity
bordering on poverty.

Basilides cut up the intermediate world into 365, heavens, as many as
there are days in the year. Did the Valentinians retain this large
number? It is not known. But what is certain is that their intermediate

world is also subject to an extremely complicated hierarchy. The eons
are distributed among the numerous heavens, each of which swarm with
battalions of various eons bearing alien, uncouth and discerning names.

Let us take as guide the author of Pistis Sophia and follow him into
the fabulous world described in a style which adds another element to
this already fantastic MYTHICAL recital.

I Have Come from That First Mystery - Which is the Last Mystery"

After his resurrection, the eon Jesus said to his apostles. "I have
come
from that first mystery which is the last mystery, that is to say from
the twenty-fourth....That is the one which surrounds the First Order
and
the five Abysses and the great light and the five Parastates and all
the treasure of light."

But the moment had not yet come to reveal to the apostles all
the hierarchy of the superior worlds. That is why Jesus had made no
mention..."of all the emanation of all the places of the Great
Invisible, nor the three Triple Powers, nor the twenty-four invisibles,

with all their places of habitation, their eons and their hierarchy,
the
manner by which they were emanated, for these are the emanations of
the Great Invisible, as well as their Innates, their Autogenqus, their
Engendered, their Stars, their Solitaries, their Archons,their Powers,
their Lords, their Archangels, their Angels, their Decans, their
liturgists,
and all the habitations of the sphere and all the hierarchies of each
of
them; and Jesus had made no mention to his disciples of all the
dispersion
of the emanations of the Treasure, nor their hierarchies, according to
the
way in which they were emanated, and he made no mention to them of
their
Saviours according to the order in which each of them stand, and he had

made no mention to them of which are the guardians who are close to
each
of the gates of the Treasure of light, and he had made no mention to
them
of the place of the Saviour of the Twins, that is to say, the child of
the child,
and he had made no mention to them of the places of the three Amen, in
what habitations they are dispersed, and he had made no mention to them

of where the five Trees are found, or the seven Amen, this is to say,
the
seven Voices, nor which is their place according to the manner of
their emanation."

All Men are not Promised to the Same Destiny. This complex world,
peopled by less and less perfect eons as the emanations continue, is
prey
to torments due to its ignorance and its imperfection.

The eon Jesus, the common production of the pleroma, who married Outer
Knowledge, made known the Gnosis, that is to say the Supreme Knowledge,

to his spouse. She, in turn, reverberated it from heaven to heaven, all

the way to the bottom of the ladder. In this way she proceeded to the
redemption of the intermediary world and atoned for the fault committed

by Sophia, the cause of their imperfection. IIIuminated by the Gnosis,
the intermediary world finally came to experience harmony, for each
henceforward knew his rank and his attributes and maintained himself
within them.

But all men are not alike, and therefore are not promised to the
same destiny. There are HYLIC BEINGS who are only matter. As simple
dwellings of the demon, they are clearly destined to destruction. Next
come the psychic persons. They have a higher soul and can be saved if
they are given the Gnosis. Lastly, there are the pneumatics (Gr.
pneuma,
breath of the spirit) who are the Perfecti, and their salvation is
assured.

The Feast of Lupercus
Valentines day began as a pagan tradition in the third century.
During this time hordes of hungry wolves roamed outside of Rome
where shepherds kept their flocks. The God Lupercus, was said
to watch over the shepherds and their flocks and keep them from
the wolves. Every February the Romans celebrated a feast called
Lupercalia to honor Lupercus so that no harm would come to the
shepherds and their flocks. Also during Lupercalia, but in honor
of the Goddess Juno Februata, the names of young women were put
into a box and names were drawn by lot. The boys and girls who
were matched would be considered partners for the year, which
began in March. This celebration continued long after wolves
were a problem to Rome.

The Vatican on UFO
Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a Vatican expert on exorcism,
has made several public pronouncements on the UFO phenomenon.
He advises that the Vatican is receiving much information on
UFO and alien contact, from its nuncios in various countries.
Monsignor Balducci is on a Vatican commission looking into
such encounters, and how to cope with them.
The Catholic Church has historically demonized many new
phenomena that were poorly understood, but Monsignor Balducci
