106.9 Free FM - Website Up & Running...

...and is showing Tom Leykis on the schedule from 3 PM to 8 PM, John &
Jeff from 11 PM to 3 AM, with Adam Carolla and Penn Jillette coming in
January.
Note that if you click on the "Coming Jan.: Adam Carolla Penn Jillette"
logo, you go direct to CBS/Infinity's website and a map that shows what
stations will be "Free" and who will be on them. For example, "New York
- WXRK FM 92.3 - David Lee Roth, Penn Jillette."
The post-Howard Era is almost upon us.

Oddly enough, the front of said website lists Leykis 8-11 PM, but I'm
guessing that's a mistake. Assuming they have no other "big ideas",
I'd be shocked if he weren't live on the station in PM drive.

One note: under my former boss Ken Kohl, who's 106.9's VP/GM, the
station has brought FM talk KLSX/Los Angeles executive producer Jason
Insalaco up to SF as PD. KLSX is Leykis' "flagship" station, a
long-time FM talker, and has carried Stern for years.
One other note: Infinity's release says that Stern's Bay Area
affiliate, KITS/105.3, will replace him with a music-intensive show:
"KITS-FM in San Francisco will launch the MORNING MUSIC CO-OP, an
entertainment-based program featuring alternative music with
unprecedented listener involvement/interaction and minimal commercial
interruption. The station's on-air programming attributes will include
music-oriented town halls, sponsorship of "locals-only" concerts,
monthly music and movie listener correspondents, frequent auditions
for permanent positions on the show, listener advisory reports, and
Q&A sessions with station executives."

David Lee Roth and Adam Carolla are confirmed as Howard Stern's main
successors.
Though the midwest-based "Rover" adds WCKG, Chicago, WKRK, Detroit,
WAQZ, Cincinnati, WMFS, Memphis and WZNE, Rochester. New York-based
David Lee Roth - a surprise guest on today's Stern show - will be heard
on WXRK and KLLI, plus these rockers (which continue to rock) - WBCN,
Boston, WRKZ, Pittsburgh, WNCX, Cleveland and WPBZ, West Palm.
L.A.-based Adam Carolla gets KLSX and KPLN, plus rockers KZON, Phoenix,
KUFO, Portland and KXTE, Las Vegas. Also - Magician and comedian Penn
Jillette will do a new one-hour live show on many of the new "Free FM"
outlets. Most of the changes happen in January - but WYSP, KPLN and the
new KIFR, San Francisco go talk immediately - as "Free FM", the identity
and talk format that Inside Radio rumored on October 18. Read this

I caught a little of the opening this morning. It's the characters from
KYLD who were fired sometime back. This is according to the morning
jocks themselves. I know nothing about them, but their material is
atrocious. They were talking with Darien O'Toole and the subject matter
included a strip club, the rear of a certain race stripper, and racing
stripes. Nice. If that's the best Bay Area local radio can provide, I
see why they're picking up Corolla in Jan.
The Leykis time is correct. The morning zoo said the 3p slot will be
hosted by John London.

True story: Back in the late '80s, I was dating a guy who lived in
New Jersey. On one of my visits to him, I found a classic rock station
and left one of his radios tuned to that station. One morning I turned
on the radio, and instead of music, I heard three people (two men and a
woman) talking. They were having a fine time chatting amongst themselves,
laughing at each other's "clever" remarks. I thought it sounded really
stupid and unprofessional. It was only when one of them mentioned the
name "Howard" that I realized this was the infamous Howard Stern show.

No that's not the best local Bay Area can provide. It is what Infinity
is will to settle for.

Hello, Patty! You heard the quintessential Howard. Reminds me a lot of
Alf Ranken's show on AA: a group of people with east coast accents
sitting around being absorbed with themselves.

Sort of lends credence to the claim that Alex Bennett did it first,
*and* was better at it. Alex's worst show was never as bad as Howard's
best- and the last few years of Alex on Live 105 were, IMO, unlistenable.

Well John London was fond of ragging a certain strip club, but that was
in part due to the proximity of Susq studios and the club. IN that
regard the Infinity conglomerated studios will provide lots of that
material (in the KPIX building)

males and likes to do club remotes.......that is something to be all
aquiver about at a spot in Seattle he drug a gaggle of giggling females

I can only heartily agree. Most radio "personalities" suck.
Unfortunately they appear to make the station money. I wonder if someone
were to offer a "music morning" with only "necessary: talk if it would make

give up the freedom of being able to say what he wants in exchange for

Yeah but Bennet's already got this Satellite gig and I don't think he's

I like Imus and Terry McGovern, neither one of which is listenable where
I am (without a 3 meter dish and I don't think my former employer is
giving one up, though I do have the space. There is MSNBC for Imus (and
cartoons for Terry), but then I feel compelled to look and Imus is truly
a man with a face for radio.
I miss McGovern's Friday auditions and the unedited tape of my college
interview with him got me an A (and lots of tittering college students)
at CCSF. I left all the FCC naught words in.
I wish I could listen to Sherwood, the last of the truly originals, but
alas Yorick.
BTW saw the movie about Murrow.....Good Night, and Good Luck. This is a
blatant plug, VERY will done.
