I received an email this morning from Someone Who Knows (plus there
have been posts on other websites) claiming that Darian O'Toole has
been officially let go by Free FM 106.9. Turi Ryder has been filling
her midday slot for the past week.

All references to Darian have been excised from the station's website
as of this morning.

It appears that all references to the entire lineup have been excised
from the website, unless "null" is the only talkshow host on KQKE.

Let me guess:

The consultants who suggested the latest format were paid in full.
Other stations will hire those consultants or,perhaps, station
management can be convinced that they did not properly carry out the
suggestions and will bring them back.

What did I miss? The Free FM website still shows John London and Penn
Gillette on the front page, with "Free FM Programming" replacing the
former Darian tab. What has KQKE got to do with Free FM?

Sorry, I confused "the Quake" and "Free FM". When you mentioned Darian
and Turi I went to the KQKE website instead of the KIFR one. I guess
most of this has become a blur for me.

But in the meanwhile, the KQKE website does offter "null" as a talkshow
host when "Lineup" or "Programming" are clicked.

That explains the response I got when I called Monday. I asked the
phone screener, "Where's Darian?" "She's been out sick since last
week....we're waiting to find out", she said.

Guess we found out. :(

I give it until this current book closes. Hard to believe that CBS
radio thought it would work here in SF.

Good radio can work in the Bay Area. News/talk works; sport talk
works, all news works, all jazz works, NPR/PRI works, classical works
-- a bunch of formats that probably wouldn't work elsewhere work very
well in the Bay Area.

But they've got to bring in people with some skills.

from the SJMN today

- - -

Brad Kava, 05:12 PM in Brad Kava, Radio

She came in like a lion in January, and Darian O'Toole crept out like a
lamb in March.

KIFR-FM (FREE FM), the format that Infinity radio launched after losing
Howard Stern hoping to take away the sting of losing the
self-proclaimed King of All Media, erased all references to O'Toole on
its website, and program director Ken Kohl came close to disavowing
all knowlege of anything and everything.

"I'm not free to discuss personnel issues," said Kohl Monday

There was talk of a dissheveled show two Fridays ago and then O'Toole
was reportedly out sick for a week.

It's not good news for the Canadian who claims San Francisco as her
home. She's been fired from some big gigs, in New York and in San
Francisco before, but this station seemed a natural fit. It's hot talk,
with young hosts, and it should have worked for her.

Although, on one of her midday shows, I heard probably the worst hour
of talk radio, this side of the Sewage Nation, when her bathroom habits
were the sole topic of conversation. Free FM had hit a major bump that
day, almost as rocky as hearing the morning Doghouse on the same
station claim that Clear Channel radio made up the incident that got
them fired.

If you heard the show last Friday that got her bumped, or have insider
news...drop a comment. I'm only hearing ugly rumors so far, but will
try to add more soon.

PS: TURI RYDER, who worked at KPIX-FM and KFRC is filling in for now.

And PPSS: If being fired is a curse in radio, just remember Howard
Stern and Rush Limbaugh, both of whom lost plenty of jobs on the way to
the top.

AND ONE MORE:::WORD IS HER LAST SHOW IS A CLASSIC...DOES ANYONE HAVE A
TAPE? I REQUESTED IT FROM KEN KOHL, WHO CLAIMS THE STATION NO LONGER
KEEPS LOG TAPES...YEAH, RIGHT. IF ONE OF YOU HAS IT, PLEASE GET IT TO
ME AND I CAN PUT PART OF IT UP HERE.

Not surprising. No log tapes = nothing to subpoena in a slander case.

Even if I kept audio logs, I would NEVER casually hand out requested

people.

"We no longer keep log tapes", is the answer you'll get from any station.

And well you should. Stations are not equipped to provide such free
services to people who can jolly well do it for themselves.

Wow. Now that's great radio. Utterly unbelievable.

The jig is up. We caught you clicking a URL. But, uh, *why*? Did you
really want to listen to a recorded radio travesty when you can hear so
many of them live?

Morbid curiosity, in my case. I have plenty of my old airchecks to
torment myself & others with, but lots of us ghouls just love it when
the Major Leaguers flub. ;)

Seriously...I haven't heard it yet. I really hope she's OK. I've seen
this business drive folks nut, and I had my turn a few times, as well.

I'm amazed constantly, because It was always my belief that there are
certain rules in radio, such as discussing station business, dis-ing
the engineers, etc. that are big no-nos. The penalties range from a
mild verbal rebuke, to getting written up, or just plain termination.
Having been both PD & GM at a non-commercial stsation, I've had to
swing that axe a few times. It's never enjoyable, espcially if the DJ
is talented. But, as we used to say at 510 S. Murphy, "talent is
expendable." Michael Daivd McGuire (sp?) said "talent is worthless
without ambition."

Blow it too many times, and you're unhirable. Guys like Sherwood could
never last these days if they pulled what he pulled. Even the shock
jocks have their limits, or find them like Turner & Twitch or Perry
Stone did.

At a modern talk radio station, that's programming. :D

Okay, I bit. It sounds like she's drunk and doesn't have much of
anything to say. Was this file *really* worth saving?

Yeah. It's not even bad, it's just tedious. I don't bear the gal any
ill will, but a train wreck is at least exciting... this was just a slow
freight. One that got a lot of sidings.

I thought Dave Attell handled it well. He remained professional
througout and didn't rag on her like the callers were.
