Maybe there's so much going on at KGO that they're trying to cram a 36
hour broadcast day into 24 hours. (It can be done with a tape recorded
at 7 1/2 IPS, then played back at 15 IPS, if the Magnecord doesn't eat
the tape.)
Then again, maybe they're remodeling their studios to put them into the
21st century. It seems that almost everything is so last century.
(Upgrading an old Magnecord to an Ampex AG-440.)
But then when an "insider" doesn't know what's going on, it's time to
scratch your nurnie and say, "Hmmm! The Magnecord just ate my lunch."

I heard a rumor that a big radio star will be coming to KGO. I hear
that it could be someone for the 10PM-1AM spot. But those are just rumors. I
also hear rumblings that Karel has bought living space in the Bay Area
recently. I hear rumors that you will be in that slot. It could just be that
they're going to broadcast on FM as well. That is pretty likely since
KGOFM.com has gone up. I have a buddy who has a buddy that works at KGO
maybe he/she could slide me some information. He/She has in the past given
me some information that turned out to be true.

Gosh, lots of rumors abound.

My sources tell me no, says the 8-ball.

The janitors know all.
Hey, how did you know it was a janitor? :)

In murder mysteries it's the trusted friend. In broadcating it's the
janitor who knows all.
I'm not sure what I'm at liberty to say. Nobody's sworn me to secrecy or
anything, but I also don't want to leave enough clues to get anyone into
trouble. Let's just say that the station choice is a good one and that the
south bay will be served well. As to talent...I'm suitably impressed.
So KGO is making another attempt at the FM... I remember KGO-FM 103.7
in the early 80s.

The old signal (sold to KLOK in 1984) was an anemic 7 kW.
Hopefully, the "new KGO-FM" will have a more potent signal, say, 50 kW,
which is the max for this region.
When compared to other AMs, KGO's signal is also somewhat compromized,
a throwback to its origns as 780 (now 790) and 5 kW and now 790 (now
810, obviously), shared with formerly co-owned WGY (then 790, now 810,
obviously).
It was apparently a condition of GE's management that KGO operatate
DA-1. This also facilitated an almost conforming array (362 mV/m/kW at
1 km is minimum conforming, and KGO is about 350), while using only 90
degree sticks, whereas 180 degree sticks would otherwise be required,
particularly if DA-N operation was proposed, which was certainly
possible when the move from 780 (790) to 790 (810) was made.
IOW, if GE wanted a 50 kW DA-N operation, then a 180 degree stick would
be required for days, and the two additional sticks could indeed be 90
degrees, whereas if GE opted for DA-1, then three 90 degree sticks
would suffice, provided GE got a waiver for minimum efficiency, which
is a reasonable request as the actual installed efficiency was 96.6
percent of minimum conforming.
And, that last 3.4 percent was more than compensated for by having a
salt water path to all the cities in the Bay Area counties.
So, hopefully a 50 kW FM signal can be found.
I wasn't living in the Bay Area in the early 80s and if I was I was
hardly listening to talk radio. I wonder who the "big star" is.
