The sign says they will start on Mon 7/28 and warns of gravel. I assume
they are doing the usual job of spreading oil/sealer and covering it with
about 4 inches of loose gravel. This time it is the bottom 4 miles, from
Pescadero road to the stop sign after Kozi Ranch. They did a similar job
last year on the top half of the climb. Back then, the gravel remained
loose for a good week or two--I assume they scrape off the excess after the
cars have compacted it. It was difficult to get traction for going uphill,
and I would not dare try the downhill direction.

I will avoid the area for the next two weeks, but please update us if you
head that way.

Cheers, Shawn

PS: Hopefully the gravel on Tunitas has been scraped by now, so I can
switch to that climb instead.

Thanks for the info! It motivated me to get out there for one last ride
before they work on it. Haven't heard from anyone lately as to the present
condition of Tunitas; hopefully I caught it as things were getting better,
not worse, but there were many ominous large piles of gravel at the side of
the road, not yet used.

Hi Mike,
We rode up Tunitas last Sat (7/26) and like you said there was loose
gravel everywhere from Hwy 1 to the bottom of the climb. We rode very
slow to avoid falling. Its really sad that the county does such of
poor job of paving. And what about the top, the last 3 miles on top,
where it flattens out, its really bumpy and could use a good pave job
or at least some loose gravel like down below! Interestingly, there
was a big BBQ going on and lots of cars going down.

In fact, there were a couple of cyclists going down too. What's up
with that?! Its almost as bad as going down Old La Honda East back to
the Portola loop - stupid, when they could go down La Honda (Hwy 84)
where there is alot less traffic and longer windy turns! People wake
up!

Why so much umbrage?

Old La Honda (east) is a nice descent now that the road has been mostly repaved.
I like it better than CA84 (east) as it has less motor traffic. But best to keep
to the right side of the road at blind corners, both going uphill and downhill.

Descending Tunitas Creek Rd. is still as bumpy as ever with potholes hidden in the
shadows. Would be a nicer descent if it got a resurfacing like Old La Honda
(east).

Descending either of these makes for a nice break from the routine. Last time I
checked these were not one-way roads.

BE GLAD! If they repave Tunitas Creek Rd you can bet that the cars will
multiply and they will begin racing on it.

I tried it on Sat, it was quite passable! A little loose gravel here and
there, especially around corners, but otherwise just fine for climbing.
They appear to have scraped off the excess gravel they had laid down... the
road is still rough and a little heavy on the legs, but that should improve
with use. (They now appear to go through the chip seal process in about two
weeks, at least as far as guys on road bikes are concerned.)

Cheers, Shawn
