CARA ANNOUCEMENTS & EVENTS

* VICTORIES & SHOUT OUTS!!!!

"THE GITS" documentary is a must see.  It tells the story of how HOMEALIVE (homealive.org) was formulated in the beginning and how the story of Mia Zapata inspired and haunted many in the punk scene & community.  For a long time, many thought the person who murdered, beat, and raped Zapata was within the community, especially the women.  How does fear turn into action and empowerment?  There are many questions that this movie inspires and much needed dialogue.  It is now on DVD and NW Film Forum gave another change for people to view.  Find out more at http://blog.kexp.org/blog/?p=6277 and to see a movie trailer.

Big UPS!!!! To AUDRE LORDE PROJECT (www.alp.org)  for organizing and marching for TRANSJUSTICE on June 27, 2008.  The 4th Annual NYC Trans Day of Action for Social and Economic Justice.  This march was initiated by TransJustice of the Audre Lorde Project, a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color Center for Community Organizing.  There statement:   "We call on our Trans and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) community and on all of our allies from many movements to join us for the 4th Annual Trans Day of Action for Social and Economic Justice.  We as TGNC People of Color (POC) recognize the importance of working together alongside other movements to change the world we want to see.  We live in a time when people of color, immigrants and poor people are disproportionately underserved, face higher levels of discrimination, heightened surveillance and experience increased violence at the hands of the state.  It is critical that we unite and work together towards dismantling the transphobia, racism, classism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia and xenophobia that permeates throughout our movements for social justice. Let's come together to let the world know that TGNC rights will not be undermined and together we will not be silenced!..... On June 27, 2008, TGNC People of Color and allies took to the streets of New York City once again and demand justice to let the world know that the Stonewall rebellion is not over and we will continue fighting for social and economic justice, raising our voices until we are heard.  We call on all social justice activists from communities of color, the LGBT movement, immigrant rights movement, the anti-war movement, the reproductive rights movement, youth and student groups, trade unions and worker organizations, religious communities and HIV/AIDS and social service agencies, both local and organizations around the country to endorse this call to action and to build contingents to march in solidarity together on June 27, 2008."

* JULY 16 – Wednesday – LADIES FIRST COLLECTIVE MEETING

6:30pm-8:00pm @ Hidmo (20th & Jackson)

Please RSVP to lul...@gmail.com if you can or just respond to this email.

This is a monthly meeting when Ladies First artists (past, future ones), organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters and any one that wants to help out and get involved meet to grow stronger.  The last meeting was successful and we brainstormed and assessed 6 months of successes and challenges.  This meeting is to talk about all the suggestions people made and to clarify leftover questions.  For instance, solidify mission/values/goals of Ladies First and to set new ones.  Also, assess the last event (July 5th), because folks want to meet after each event and see how we can change and improve as we go.

* CARA OFFICE BURGLARIZED

CARA's office has been closed for the past week due to a burglary on June 21, 2008. The people involved took our main computers with monitors and hard-drives and there was damage done to our office property.  We understand the conditions that push people to these actions, but also want to consider our safety as an all women of color staff.  Over the past week, we have bought new computers, rebuilt our furniture, and cleaned up our office space.  Thank you to all the phone calls and emails with words of encouragement during this difficult time.  We gather hope in the fact that our work is important and needed, as gentrification and oppression pushes our people against each other instead of fighting courageously against the an unjust world.

AUG 4 – DIWA PUBLICATIONS submissions DUE

CALLING OUT TO ALL WRITERS, ARTISTS, PROFESSIONALS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS IN THE COMMUNITY!

DIWA: Illuminating Pilipina Voices© would like your contributions!

Diwa [Tagalog]: "essence," or intrinsic nature of things; "soul," or cause of inspiration and energy; "spirit" or a human being's moral, religious or emotional nature; "thread" or main thought that connects different parts; "sense"; "consciousness"; "gist"; "meaning"; "idea". (Leo James English, Tagalog-English Dictionary)

Through the written word, artistic endeavors, and scholarly research, Diwa: Illuminating Pilipina Voices is a multidisciplinary publication that aims to augment the visibility of the Pilipina by providing an avenue to explore diversity amongst Filipino women; highlight Pilipina achievements in the community; create dialogues on Pinayism or Pilipina feminist paradigms; educate and provoke critical thought and discussion; bridge issues about the Pilipina in the Philippines, the U.S., and the larger global scene; and bring awareness about the
Pilipina community to youth and adults within general and professional audiences.

Issue #1: "INVISIBILITY"
DEADLINE: August 4, 2008

Filipinos have long been known as the "invisible minority" within the Asian/Pacific Islander community as well as the greater community at large. Diwa's first issue will explore any aspect of the Filipino woman's experiences regarding this "invisible" status. We strongly encourage contributors to think beyond cultural representation and also highlight subpopulations, issues, and people or artists in the community that have been stigmatized and/or given little exposure.
Some topics could explore issues pertaining to older Pilipina adults, "mail-order brides," domestic violence between Pinays and Pinoys, the LGBT community and definitions of femininity/masculinity, experiences of Filipino women overseas, indigenous forms of spirituality, Filipino women who are biracial, etc.

Although the subject of Diwa focuses on Filipino women, we welcome contributions from any individual regardless of race, ethnic or national origin, gender, or religious affiliation.

* AUG 8-11 – QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR RETREAT/CELEBRATION

It is a queer focused (but not queer exclusive) super chill gathering/retreat/bangin' celebration for radical people of color hosted in the city of Portland, OR by some fellow QPOCs.  It is a celebration of our art, music, and burgeoning communities with an emphasis on self-care. The weekend long fiesta will take place from August 8-11, 2008.  Why?  We as people of color must develop a more balanced relationship with struggle: one that encompasses not only dialogue and conflict but alsolove and care for ourselves and each other.  It can be hard to maintain nurturing relationships when we are all keenly aware of the collective sense of urgency concerning the future our communities and our planet.  But it is impossible to enact sustainable change when we
are coming from a place of woundedness.  The focus of this weekend is a different rhythm entirely.  This weekend we are allowing ourselves to take the space and time to create new connections and loving interactions.  We are celebrating our accomplishments and strengths as well as our right to sit down to a good meal and take a deep breath.  So many times our relationships are built on the ways we suffer in the world.  We'd like to shift the focus back to care for ourselves and each other so that we can fight from the place of grounded-ness instead of a place of disconnect from our bodies and souls.  Who's invited?  This retreat is for people of color only.  People of color of all genders and sexualities are welcome to attend.  We ask that white folks be respectful of our space and only attend those events  designated "open to all".  PLEASE RSVP at blackmagi...@gmail.com  We want to get an idea of how many of y'all are coming! Please email us if you need a place to stay or have any concerns! If you're interested in helping organize ride shares, please email us. If anyone is interested in leading a workshop/skill share please contact us at the above email address.  Contributions to the art show must be sent by August 1, 2008.

* AUG 11-18 - Seattle Young People's Project (SYPP) "The 2008 Summer Youth Organizing Institute"

The YO! is a week long social justice training camp for and by youth. Learn about undoing oppression and how to be an effective youth organizer and leader in your community. * SEPT 26-28, 2008 CRITICAL RESISTANCE Conference (CR10) to celebrate its 10th Anniversary (Oakland, CA)

We are organizing to go, so contact us!

CR 10 is a national organizing project in celebration of Critical Resistance's 10th Anniversary.  CR10 provides an opportunity to assess the successes and challenges of the movement to abolish the prison industrial complex (PIC) during the past ten years, to examine how the PIC has adjusted to meet the challenges our work has posed to it, and what we must do to gain ground over the next 10 years.  They work for PIC abolition because they do not believe that any amount of imprisonment, policing, or surveillance will ultimately make communities safer or more self-determined, prevent "crime," or help repair the damage that happens when one person hurts another.  People in Seattle are gearing up for this conference, so please look for more information in the future.

*WE B*GIRLZ (Berline, Germany)

We B*Girlz Festival - August 2008 – Berlin
www.b-girlz-berlin.com

Supported by the "Hauptstadtkulturfonds" and with support of the mayor, we will organize one of the biggest festivals for women in Hip Hop so far, a 4-week Festival with workshops, panel discussions, film festival, exhibitions, battles and shows.

We B*Girlz wants to present a strong role model for adolescent girls. Women play an important role in Hip Hop culture, but are presented by the media mostly as scantily dressed background
dancers. We B*Girlz Productionz wants to show that women mastered skills in all aspects of Hip Hop and have earned a place in Hip Hop history. We will celebrate their creativity with a one month festival in August 2008 in Berlin.

It will be the first festival of its kind in Europe comparable only to the B-Girl Be in Minneapolis which was celebrated for the 3rd time in 2007 and unfortunately will be suspended this year.
Beginners will be able to learn different ways of expressing themselves, advanced artists will be able to study further in master classes given by international artists, and the audience will be able to indulge in dance music and art.

Our intention is to provide a platform for girls and young women from different nations and cultural backgrounds to make contacts, exchange ideas, and support each other. The We B*Girlz Festival will provide girls with the tools to be creative in the different aspects of Hip Hop and will also teach them how to document their own culture through multimedia.
