Hi Sachin,
well at that rate you can't expect to buy a
telescope .... a great suggestion for beginners is to get descent
binoculars and familiarize yourself in night sky..once you're
done,then you can invest in a telescope... i suggest you make your own
telescope...that way you'll get to know how things work...

@Chandrashekar:
Stellarium is the best place to start.
You can see planets, constellations, deep sky objects like star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and so on.
You can try to see the stars and try to guess the constellation and verify it. You can use the search feature (Ctrl+F) and search for Messier objects, zoom in on them and enjoy.
Also you can fast forward the time and see how planets move from one constellation to other.  You can change the latitude of the place and see how the position of the pole star changes with latitude. Also you can see how sun's path is affected by latitude (Ex: You can observe how the duration of the day and night are affected).
You can see the eclipses.
You can zoom in on Jupiter and see how its moons move.
You can zoom in on Saturn. Change the year and see how the orientation of the rings change.

Basically, you can have a lot of fun with Stellarium and learn a lot too...

@Syed:
Olympus 10x50 binocs are what you are looking for.

Keerthi.

Hi There - All the newbies,

A good pair of binocs and stellarium is a brillliant combination for basic observing. :)

According to your budgets,

1) Rs. 3000 - you will get a good pair of 10x50 binocs.
2) Rs. 4000 - you might perhaps get a bushnell 11x70 binocs
3) Rs. 5000 - for this budget, you can get a very good pair of 11x70s, 15x70, and, if you buy from abroad, you can even get a giant 20x80 binocs!

One thing is for sure,  - A binocular is VERY MUCH required for observing. Even when you have a big telescope, you would really require a binocs tpo identify the constellations and spot a few bright objects. A binocular is a dvatageous because it has a big field of view compared to a telescope.

Regards,
Udayan.

Shiva.

Err if I am to pitch in. "Best" is a relative term here. The definition will vary on the needs of a person. Stellarium is no doubt the best in graphics and for a newbie, but there are other softwares like Cartes du Ciel, Mega Star & Starry Night Pro which are astounding in their database capabilities. Then there are also Sky Map Pro and The Sky which are very good. Lots more which I have missed out or unaware of.

Hi,

Amar and myself have had a lot many starry nights using nothing but the good old Cambridge star atlas. For those who dont like to stare at a computer screen in the middle of the night, the usual way of refering a software sky, Cambridge star atlast is one of the best you can find.

i think you best start with binocs, you can transport them easily.like i suggested,go for the olympus 10x50,
try in whizz.binocs can show you clusters and nebulae quite easily!if you are deciding for a scope,start with the meade 60mm at 8000/- or the 70mm at 10000(my scope!) those are great too!
