Dear Sunil,
Your question as to how there can be 2 "sankrantis" in a
lunar month is quite pertinent. Therefore it needs an explanation! On
your terms, a lunar month (approx.) = 29.530589 days and a sidereal
solar month = sidereal solar year/12 = 365.256364/12 = 30.43803 days.
Hence solar month > lunar month , QED says Sunil!
But the above values are all only "mean" (madhyama,
average). The "true" lengths of lunar months are different from the
"mean" value depending on the varying ang. velocities of the Sun &
Moon. This, in turn, depends on the angular distance ("anomaly",
manda-kendra) from the apogee (mandochcha) of either body. The same
is the case
with a solar month based on the anomaly of the earth from its apogee.
Thus, though less frequently, a " kshayamasa"
does occur when in that particular peiod a lunar month contains a full
solar month within it !
