Hello Mr. Venkatesh,
Good to know that you'll be back again with us after a very long time. I stay in JPNagar and I've been to Hosahalli quite often too, so I can easily come with you. You must remember me on the day you came to your first meet with us at Cubbon Park, I was going to accompany you till Vivekananda school after the meet. I'm the same person.

I am currently shifting my house, the process is going on currently, hence i've no idea about the availability of the connection of my phone, if it gets connected before Friday then you can surely give me a ring. And also hopefully the number shouldnt change. I'm shifting to East End circle, anyway not much of a difference, it's between Jaynagar and JPNagar. Anyway here it is - 26584097.

Where are you exactly located, please can you mention? Thanking You. Amar.

PS TO ALL - We need to LEAVE B'lore city at 2 pm and cross Yelahanka region around 3 pm, ONLY THEN can we reach Hosahalli confortably much before dark say by 5 pm. EVERYTIME until now we've reached ONLY AFTER dark and setup everything then. Hence everyone please take note of this time. Atleast the instruments should follow this time because of the formalities involved like setting up, adjusting etc, humans can manage somehow even after dark.

A common meeting place should be decided based upon the convenience of all the attendees, for the new as well as old members. Hence please do reply about the location for meeting point.

Yes...
we had better leave early

Shashank has confirmed the presence of two of his telescopes: 4.5" f/9 Celestron and 8" f/6 handmade.

I have confirmed the presence of my 8" f/8.

Hemant's 12" scope is confirmed

What about Hemant's 6" and Ravindra's 11x50?

Amar's 10" had better be repaired...

:)
So we had better leave early (except for Shashank, who has college)

Be Blissful always.

Regards,
   Akarsh.

OK so this is the summary for the humans and the telescopes that will be present that day, on the 23rd Saturday star party. This is the list of people who've confirmed their presence directly, so sorry if I've forgotten anyone's names.

Hemanth Hariyani
Akarsh Simha
Amar Sharma
Venkatesh Sundarajan
Shashank H. Jaggannath

Ravindra needs to confirm his presence as he's making it a day before, on Friday, 22nd. Where are others? to name a few Pavan Keshavamurthy, Harshad R. Joglekar, Abhay D.Nayak, Vinay P.R. Everyone else please confirm your presence here before Friday afternoon as the how-abouts of transport and people have to be sorted out accordingly.

TELESCOPES:

VISUAL OBSEVING :

Hemanth's 12" f/4.5 dob
Akarsh's 8" f/8 equatorial mount
Hemanth's 6" tracking system (for photography)
Shashank's 4.5" manual tracking system (for photography)
Venkatesh's 9.25" SCT (for photography??)

PROBABLE ONES:
My, Amar's 10" f/5.1 dobsonian telescope (if the primary mirror holder gets repaired by then)
Shashank's 8" f/6 equatorial telescope (if vehicle is there to transport it)

As of now Venkatesh and me meetup and carry his scope and other humans. Hemanth's car can carry Shashank's scope from his place at Malleswaram (if that's the way it's going to be) and as many others possible (3 including him, the driver) and proceed to the observing site from the meetup place. This sorts out issues for atleast 5-6 people.

Hence we leave at 2:00 pm from our meeting place (yet to be decided) and cross Yelahanka by 3:00 pm and hence reach Hosahalli Govt. High Shool by 5 pm to setup the equipments and even take photographs of our star-party. (We can also use one of this photo as our group's homepage photo from now on, where BAS or it's activities needs to be shown!)

Hemanth, Ravindra, Akarsh and me will be going observation again on Friday (22nd, a day before), hence please send it before we leave by 1:00 pm. Last minute entries cannot be accepted unless you have your own trasnport.

Ok... some inputs about Shashank... on his behalf.

Shashank and me will be coming in Shashank's Omni.
There is space for 2 (stretchable to 3-4?) more people and whoever
wants to join us can call Shashank / e-mail him ASAP or even call me
(and I'll talk to Shashank when he's free).

Shashank, thus confirms his 8" f/6 telescope (For visual observing)
and his 10x50 binoculars.

Could I request Amar to update the list of equipment and observers?

PS: Amar, give us a contact number ASAP.

Thanks.

This is not to announce about out next star-party - observation and astrophotography session. That I'll have to check in the software or calendar for the right date with the least Moon and decide. But this is to notify about the "location".

It's time we went back to our Southern observing site, Sivanhalli, after EXACTLY one year, in a 2-3 days from now on! This place is just 35 km from Bangalore city (center) and after Bannerghatta National park. The roads here too are very good (after the park), totally tarred and NOWHERE as bad as Hosahalli entire stretch is, and interference lights-wise is only from the North where b'lore city is. This was my place for 3 years, and ABAA's for more than a decade!! with EXOTIC skies and more exotic SOUTHERN splendours and skies that Hosahalli lacks due to the big and bright town Dodballapur in the South. To the South is nothing but forests and forests. Here south is MUCH, much better than Hosahalli and vice versa, Hosahalli has slightly better north than Sivanhalli. A good...infact wonderful place for trekking within the National Park premises this is. And we also need to check out new places/sites as part of our observation trips, hence I suggest we go back to this site, it's much better than the current stage of immense background lights Hosahalli is undergoing since more than just a month. And the distance is also very very comfortable, being less than half of Hosahalli. (just 25 km from my place!) This place has Ramakrishna Ashram with all possible facilities for our comfort. (Those having gone here will comment more, like Akarsh, Shashank, Sathya etc)

So...our first star-party of the new year 2007 is going to be at Sivanhalli. We need also to practice for Messier Marathon here, as this is one of the locations apart from Hosahalli for the dual marathon that we've planned in that week of mid-March! Will announce the star-party date later.

Maybe one of you people should CHECK if THEY're still as good AS they WERE...
It'd be GREAT if SIVANAHALLI can SERVE as a LOCATION for BAS.

Besides, MESSIER MARATHON 2007 will REQUIRE reasonably better SKIES than that are atop Hosahalli CURRENTLY.

I'll elaborate little bit further again...

HOsahalli is undergoing some extreme fluctuations in background brightness, this situation was NOT like it was just even a month and a half before. Hosahalli is getting AS LIGHTED up due to haze, fog, clouds, neighbouring lights whatever you blame it to be..suddenly. And Sivanhalli isn't and wont in the future experience SUCH abrupt developments because it's within a jungle premises, the human progress there will be slow, hosahalli comes close to a big town (dodballapur) and on the way to a highway. We're also surrounded BETWEEN LOTS of local lights around us. So atleast we can without doubt expect much better skies at Sivanhalli that what hosahalli CURRENTLY is (as far as my latest comparirsion between the 2 places goes). Anyway it's a looong time over I went there to meet those guys, so I'll be going there sometime this week soon before Moon starts bothering due to it's phase and brightness. Will let know the exact state then, but whatever happens, we NEED TO CHANGE hosahalli and go somewhere closeby, due to the horrific background lights. We need to still practice for the Marathon which's very close by,and we're nowhere practiced with it, except Akarsh.

i agree.....
but the last time we went to shivanahalli, the light pollution was pretty high.... remember that tubelight to the east? and if you want more instances of shivanahalli's light pollution, i'd suggest you go to these two links... these are photos taken by me for 30 seconds and 20 minutes respectively and will show you the extent of light pollution there....

but, we definetly need a shift of location, that's for sure.....

Hosahalli is lighted up solely because of DEW, FOG and HAZE... otherwise Hosahalli is still a wonderful location.

The people at Kavlaur are scientists and they are definitely sensible when they continue their observations in Kavalur. But when I went to Kavalur few days back, the skies were AS LIGHTED UP AS HOSAHALLI. I asked if this kind of sky glow was normal - the reply I got was that it was due to HAZE.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to SEE this haze in the dark - but look at the sky JUST BEFORE SUNRISE, during twilight, and the sunlight's angle will show you that the sky was lighted up ONLY BECAUSE you were looking THROUGH THICK HAZE.

If you say that LIGHTS have sprouted in Hosahalli, I agree. But when you say that THEY are affecting the skies - I WON'T. Otherwise, you cannot explain the wonderful skies we had yesternight just after sunset and the M76 we saw through the 12".
In Shivanahalli, the lights in the north are PERMANENT and rise up till an altitude of atleast 40 DEGREES - that is because Bangalore is MUCH closer (only 20 km away), whereas the southern lights in Shivanahalli are due to a much more distant Bangalore (40 km)

I agree that Shivanahalli is a good site for our southern observations, but I would still prefer Hosahalli for observing. Anyway, I would love to take a look at Shivanahalli sometime and rate the skies again, enjoy the company of the people there etc.

There are ONLY TWO problems with Shivanahalli:
1. Lights
2. Mr. Babu (and the Babu-effect)!!!
