Hello from afar. I'm a Moore through my grandfather, writing a book about my family (SCOT to the north of IRE, then to the states). I have no early ancestors' names bit am guessing we once were tenants at Rowallan or another Muir holding, likely leaving early in the 18th c. I've read Sir William Mure's history of the family and have other sources, tho the info is mostly generic. Is the Muir name (by any spelling) still represented in Ayrshire? Does anyone know why/how we left for the north of IRE? Any tips, leads, suggestions are most welcome. Many thanks.

Hi. My 4th great-grand uncle, Archibald Finnie, married Janet Muir (the daughter of William Muir and Janet Taylor) in Kilmarnock in 1772. Archibald mentioned Rowallan in his Will. Cheers, Lynne.

I wish I could help but I don't have any information.

Hi all,

I do show Archibald Finnie and Janet Muir on My Burns Tree, however, their relationships are way out due to errors on my tree!

Thanks,
Debbie Rea

Hello, Lynne, Robert, Debbie, All,

Thanks for your help and encouraging words. And mea culpa, it was the early 17th c. when I think we emigrated, not the 18th, so slip of the fingers or brain there.

Most likely I won't find a Moore of my own line in Ayrshire back then, too few clues. One stray note suggests a large extended family, including my immediate kin, left together for the north of Ireland, probably Co. Antrim or Down, later to the U.S.

But good to know the Finnie-Muir-Burns connection of later years. Would that trace to Robert Burns? Just curious.

Lovely to hear from so many of you. I wish things were better over here, I'd say come visit.

Best wishes,

Susan Council

From 1606, the Plantation of Ulster began. This likely accounts for your lot moving from Ayrshire.

Hello all,

I've been following my paternal Stewart line back from Ford and Longbenton in Northumberland to Ulster in the 1700s.

They all lived in Antrim, primarily Ballymena. I used Rootsireland and Scotlandspeople

I was able to find birth, baptism, marriage and death certificates.

Census records show them moving back to Ayrshire c.1850-1860.

Thanks

Scott
