Thank you for your reply Michael.
I am the President/Secretary of the Monkton and Prestwick Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland. Each year we pay Homage to the local Miners who gave their lives during the two World Wars. We do this at the Glenburn Cain which is situated in Shaw Road, Prestwick. I have spoken to a local Prestwick Historian and Mr Alex Young who together with his uncle, Jackie Young, wrote an extremely informative and interesting book called 'Backward Glances'. This book gives a graphic insight into life of the Glenburn Village. The reason I added my search to ayrshirehistory@googlegroups was to gather as much information as I could, especially the relationship between the Cairn and the Legion. The village is no longer there and most of the inhabitants have either passed away or moved elsewhere, such as yourself.
I find it amazing how this modern technology has improved our communication and never expected to get a reply from Canada.
kind regards
Ron

Hi Shirley, the name Kerr rings bells for me or even if is Keirs or Keir. I worked down Glenburn pit as a young apprentice electrician until roughly about 1960 when I moved to the much more modern Killoch Colliery which has also gone a number of years ago. We lived in the front row for a few years as newly weds before we were off to the Zambian copper mines. Perhaps your husband will remember Fairfields which was an inclined shaft a few hundred yards from the main runway of the airport? I went down there many times and although I never needed to it was possible to walk underground from there to Glenburn pit (Auchencruive 4 &5)and on to Mossblown pit (Auchencruive 6 & 7) and probably to Drumley Pit, Mossblown and even further to No9 as it was called at the village of Annbank before coming to the surface. I doubt if there are many people living who would know that. At some point it appears they had interconnecting roadways probably for safety. Your husband's father probably 'belled' me underground at Glenburn pit many times. Hope you're both enjoying life in Australia. I'm now back here and living just across the runway in the village of Monkton. Have a look in Google maps and you'll see it all Shirley. Hope I haven't bored you too much. Theo Baker

Hello Theodore,

There is a new Facebook group called Mining Ancestors in Scotland. I am from long lines of Scottish miners. Maybe you remember my uncles or my grandfather--All Devlins, and all  living in the Glenburn rows. My uncle Peter was killed, "struck by a fall of stone from the roof." in early 1960. The reason that I am trying to contact you is because of your description of how the mines were connected underground. I would like to post that bit to the Facebook group, but not without checking with you first. Hope all is well! I spent a bit of time in Prestwick as a child since my mother was anxious to go on visits to "home," which is how Scots living in the USA referred to Scotland. So sad that the swimming pool is no longer! I  loved it. When I brought my kids to Prestwick, ready to swim, we were very surprised!

My Mother in-law grew up here and has early stages dementia and i would like her to read this while she can. All information appreciated.

Hi Gillian — have you had any luck? I can find mention of the book when searching, but I have never found a copy of it available for sale or download. One of my cousins in Prestwick found a copy for borrowing at a public library in Ayr. I don’t know if that is near you. Hopefully, that is helpful!

Hi Ellen, Unfortunately no. I have had no joy in locating this. I would really like to purchase the book and give it to my in-laws. :(

There is a private book shop in Kendal that is called “Left on the shelf”.   The owner collects old books
Most left wing .
Perhaps if you contacted him he may be able to trace it for you ? .  His shop is crammed with old books from ceiling to floor -www.leftontheshelfbooks.co.uk

Kind regards
