Hello,
Trying to find information on a family surname Doherty, muliple spelling. According to the library in Kilwinning, the family lived in 1951 in the old school house, kilwinning, after that can't find any trace of them. I know there was a daughter named Joan that was a nurse and a son that everyone called Jack and at some time he worked on the corperation buses in Glasgow, have been told he was later a civil servent.
Would like to find any one related to this family, and am hoping to come to Killwinning this summer.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Regards
Lorraine Holmes

Hi Lorraine,

Do you think this may have been the old schoolhouse your relatives lived in?

Hello all...

I was born at Goldcraigs down the road from this school in 1950 ...

My brother and sister attended the Lylestone School before we moved down into the town....

The following information comes from my brother .....

There was only a small cloakroom, a small staff room, and a classroom which accommodated children of all ages .....

The Teacher was a Mrs.Templeton who lived in the Woodwynd in Kilwinning who travelled up to the school every day....... and retired a few years later to be replaced by a Mrs.Gilmour from Glasgow ...

So it seems that the Lylestone Schoolhouse was separate from the School, wherever it was....

A Mr.& Mrs.Barr lived in the house / cottage a wee bit further up the Auchentiber Road on the right hand side and bro is sure it was called Lylestone Cottage ....

Mr.Barr drove a school meals lorry and Mrs.Barr was the school dinner lady at Lylestone School ....

It's a shame this building has got into such a state ...

Best wishes with your research ...

Francisco Haro.

Hello again ...

I was born in 1950 at Goldcraigs. bro is 3 yrs older than me, so without asking him (lives in Kirkaldy) I assume he attended the Lylestone School from 1952 until 1954 when we moved down into the town ....

He also worked in the area at Gooseloan Farm for  time when he left the school and has a remarkable memory of the area and happenings in the family's time at Goldcraigs....

I think you should bear in mind that there were a lot of rural schools around Kilwinning, as well as Lylestone and including Benslie, Fergushill, Auchentiber etc.

I do know myself that in 1955 when I started at Eglinton District primary School that Mr.Ferguson lived in the School House ....

I think in your case the operative word is The "Old" School House which makes me think that the School was closed at that time you mention ...

Best wishes....  Francisco Haro.

Hello
I just noticed that i wrote 1961 instead of 1951, and i think you may be right that the "old" was used to clarify that the school was closed, some one did mention a while ago that,it could refer to Fergushill.
Unfortunatly i have very little information available to me on this family, though i do know for certain that the daughter Joan was a nurse in Glasgow in 1953, have no idea how to follow,up on this though
Thank you for,the information
Best wishes

Hi Lorraine’

Type Glasgow nursing records into Google to find where the records are held.

Good luck with your search.
