Does anyone have access to the text of the ' Invitation ' issued in
1819, presumably in the press, by Mr, later Sir Alexander Boswell
Esq., of Auchinleck to a public meeting - to discuss the project of a
Monument, at Alloway, to commemorate Burns.
We know that one person showed up at the meeting: the Rev. Hamilton
Paul, then of Coylton. Nothing daunted, the two of them appointed each
other Chairman and Treasurer of the project, which they were to bring
to fruition in 1823. The foundation stone was laid on 25th January
1820 by Boswell with masonic ceremony - and the Monument was opened on
4th July 1823. The £3,350 cost was met by public subscription. Details
of the' Invitation' and the location of the Meeting, gratefully
received. DWR Purdie, Editor, The Burns Encyclopaedia.
