Does anyone know anything about the memorial stone near the ruins of
Montgreenan Castle dedicated to Corporal John Smith, Company B, 10th
Ohio Volunteers, died 25/11/1863 at Chattanooga. I assume Corporal
Smith was a local man who had emigrated to Ohio and died in the battle
of Chattanooga during the American Civil War. The memorial stone has
been repaired sometime in the last 20 years or so (I saw an old photo
of it in its damaged state somewhere, but unfortunately cannot
remember where!). Any information would be welcome.

Hi : Not about the stone directly, but I would check the online US Civil War
soldiers lists, and when you find his name and number, order, or check on
line, for his documents, including his pension and other information.
Besides info about his birthplace and family, he would have to have filled
out a pension document naming his next of kin and there should be a list of
payments made to them. Those papers might mention funds directed to erecting
of a memorial stone.
