Can anyone tell me about the Fullarton area of Irvine? It was south of the river and part of Dundonald Parish.
In the 1841 and 51 censuses I have found addresses of various people at Boat Stabs, Guthres and Quay. It seems that they might be the same place, or close to each other, but the names have dropped out of use by 1881.
At first I thought Boat Stabs was a farm but as its name implies, could it have been a place with stobs (posts) for tying up boats? As there were several families there, I think it must have been a hamlet. In 1851 one of my ancestors there was a farmer and fisher which would support the idea that it was on the river.
A search of old maps and photos of irvine has not brought up any other information.

Hello Sheena:

Fullarton seems to have slid into obscurity. The best source is the Statistical Accounts of Scotland, done in Victorian times, which tell all about the parishes, their histories and census type of  information.

The various editions have different material, so check them all, even if they are before or after your ancestor's time. The Statistical Accounts are online for free, and there is a separate Ayrshire section online as well.

Your other main source would be the lovely big book: The History of Irvine Royal Burgh and New Town by John Strawhorn, published in l985 by the Cunninghame District Council. It has many references to Fullarton.

"Images of Scotland - Irvine" of 1998 compiled by Neil Stirrat has numerous photographs, including an aerial photograph showing both Matthew Wright's Sawmills and Gottries Road on page 34.

Hi...

According to McJannet in his "Royal Burgh of Irvine" book of 1938....

"Guthries" or "Gottries" is / was on the South side of Montgomery Street.

Page 13. "and that recently there were traces of a spring, between that property and a building situated in Guthries, which falls into the river nearby"

Page 283. "The name Gottries or Guthries appears in 1732, and the road of that name on the south side of Montgomery Street, which formerly led to Troon, may be derived from 'gott' or 'gote' .

"Quay" seems to have been the Area where Matthew Wright's sawmill stood.

Page 273. "In the year 1844 the lands and rights belonging to the Burgh - the area of the ground on the quay occupied by John Wright & Son, Timber Merchants. "

Page 282. "At the quay there were several storehouses, coalyards and an Inn, or public-house, which by a singular feu had exclusive right of selling ale and spirits"

Can't find any mention of "Boat Stabs" ..

Hope this helps in some way. I'm not local to those areas but perhaps someone local can help better.

Francisco Haro.
