Hey Roadrunners!
What an exciting weekend of racing at AYC's Turnback Canyon Regatta! We faced some challenging conditions with the wind and rain (believe it or not!) but our first-ever Turnback youth dinghy course was a success! Thank you to our race committee and all the parents and volunteers who helped out:
Bill Records, Kristin Williams, Annamarie Dean, Alex Larrouilh, Tony Slowik Sr., Mike Singh, Jennifer Loehlin, Philippe Bettler and
Dixon LeGrande. We had a record-breaking turnout from our junior sailors with 16 youth participants:
Reese Butler, Ben Froelich, Ethan Froelich, Nicole Prado and Tony Slowik, Jules Bettler, Spencer LeGrande, Gracie Bulgerin, Sam Peel, Charles Larrouilh, Ricky Trent, Cole Dean, Nikki Goodwin, Andrew Butler, Will Abrams, and
Jim Abrams. Special congratulations to our trophy winners:

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE:
Our Spring 2013 sailing season has officially ended, however we will be having a make-up practice for our beginners this Friday, May 31st at our usual time from 4:00-6:30 since we were rained out last week. Please come prepared to get wet as we will be taking our final swim checks and capsize tests!
There will be no junior sailing activity this Saturday or Sunday due to Junior Sailing Camp staff training.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
A reminder that there will be no weekly practices until the Summer Season starts up on July 20th to accommodate our busy summer camp schedule. However, there are several opportunities available to keep you out on the water this summer:
- Summer Camps: Registration for PB&J
and our Junior Sailing Camp is open and filling up fast! Don't miss out!
More information and registration here.
- Free Sail Sundays: There will be several volunteer-run Free Sail Sundays throughout the summer break. I will send out notice of those dates once the schedule is finalized.
- Wednesday Night Races: As many of
you know, AYC hosts Sunfish/Laser races every Wednesday night May
through September (6:00 to dark). This event is open to sailors of all
ages. Also the juniors are welcome to come up to the clubhouse
after racing to enjoy snacks, drinks and discussion on rules, starts,
sailing techniques and racing in general. This is hosted by the
Sunfish fleet but all are welcome. Additionally, if anyone is interested in learning how
to do race committee, one or two are welcome to come aboard each week to
learn how a course is set up and a better understanding of the timing. Race
committee usually tries to leave the club around 5 to 5:30 pm, with the last
race not to start any later than 15 minutes before sunset.
If your Roadrunner is interesting in participating and would like
to borrow an AYC Laser or Sunfish, please let me know and we can make
arrangements. A reminder that AYC boat charters MUST be approved by me
prior to the event (including these races).
- ASA 101 Certification: Our American Sailing Association instructors are offering a Basic Keelboat certification course June 22nd and 23rd for juniors at a discounted rate of $195. This is a great introduction to big boat sailing! Contact me for more information.
For all the parents out there who want to learn to sail, AYC Sail Training is hosting a Learn to Sail Clinic this Saturday from 1:00-5:00 pm. More information and registration can be found here.
Thanks, everyone! As always, your enthusiasm and support of our Junior Sailing program is much appreciated! Hope to see you all out at AYC soon!
