Although there are many groups on campus operating this type of equipment, I have only been involved in one general classroom install of capture/recording. The capture equipment was Mac based and was remotely managed by a different group on campus. We installed the camera and microphone equipment and wanted the users in the room to have some control over and indication of when the system was active. Our low tech solution was a multi-pole power switch which supplied DC power to the camera, microphones and an "on-air" light. The light we used was a low cost LED model made by Tekpoint which I can no longer find online. As I recall the studio type lights were fairly expensive.
We do install many video conference systems in classrooms and of course everyone has a camera phone these days. None of which have on-air lights. Our VC systems mute mic's and park cameras when they are turned off.

Subject: [av-1] On Air Light
Do any of you use an "on-air" light or other indicator in a room, if you have class capture installed and running?
In our particular circumstance we are thinking particularly about computer labs. We have class capture installed, along with ceiling mics and cameras. A savy student could begin a recording in the room, without any one knowing. We are trying to think through a way of letting people know that a recording is taking place in that room.
Thanks for the advice-
