Anyone have success using Flash Server to do live streaming of events? We're specifically looking for recommendations for capturing the content from control center that will be consolidating multiple remotely controlled ptz cameras and the audio from a house sound system to package for the server. Thanks.

We stream live Adobe Flash Media Server all the time for live events. You mention content from a control center - are you talking about a switched video source or taking a composite of the multiple cameras and encoding that?

Then all you need to do is get the signal via a capture card (such as an Osprey) into a computer and download Adobe Flash Media Encoder. We then push to our streaming or interactive servers depending on the nature of the live event.
We can take this off line from the list if you want but I'll be happy to have you talk to my streaming staff about the details involved if you'd like.

I want to get my hands on one of those Roland boxes myself.
But Doug. when you first asked your question the product that came to mind is made by Broadcast Pix. Public Access TV producers in larger metropolitan areas use these sorts of LIPS (live integrated production system) mixer/controllers to do one-person productions.
I saw a demo at a dealer (Broadcast Pix is located not too far from Boston) and was so impressed. Just wish we had the support to do this kind of quality at Tuck.

We're doing our own streaming for the most part, though for large events we push to Akamai when a client requests.
The Libraries also has a video sharing site for the MIT community known as TechTV http://techtv.mit.edu/ which is currently using Kaltura as a back end CDN.

For those of you supporting video production on your campus... where do you think cameras are heading? HD and tapeless? How long do you think it will take to get there?
We know how expensive cameras are, and to build up a fleet to support a variety of classes, and create a life-cycle for that fleet, can prove to be very challenging. There is where I am right now...finding a way to maximize older equipment now that still works while planning future acquisitions.
I look forward to hearing from others who may share a similar experience.
For those universities managing video production, a few of questions; 1. Do you use a Job Sheet for each job? 2. If so would you mind sharing a copy with me? 3. What percentage of chargeable hours do you typically expect a videographer to achieve on a daily or weekly basis?
Kindest regards

Our guys use HD recorders, and/or go direct to capture appliances. Are there any production cameras with onboard streaming and ethernet interfaces, or wifi? Seems feasible if you don't need uncompressed video.
What's tape?

Tape is what you use to stick the cables to the floor so nobody trips.
We've just purchased three Panasonic HD cameras that record to SD cards. These are more for production use than classroom use. For class use, we've built camera carts with a security camera, microphone(s), audio mixer, monitor and DVD recorder. In theory, you could capture to a laptop instead by passing the signal through an A/D box (Canopus, etc.).
Just get the students to record stuff on their phones!

You're still using cables? Everything is wireless here in the 22nd century, even power.

For my distance classrooms a HD upgrade would be a forklift upgrade - I have 15 SD cameras going through a 64x64 router, video switchers, displays, recorders, etc. And that's only one set of classrooms we manage.
But new installs are getting HD PTZ cameras which may be a bit of a compromise in terms of controls and options, but better capture quality.
On our production side we've switched over to HD for a few reasons - better quality, archival content for future use and because clients expect it. Some is tapeless, some XDCam, still other HDV. We're also pushing signals across the net for HD capture and streaming.
For planning, I think a gradual transition is what will work best. Combination of upgrading piecemeal as budget allows.
