Subject: AutoKey, Xubuntu
I have a small laptop which is not very fast (Asus EeePC-900), so I
installed Xubuntu 12.04 on it. Now I want to install AutoKey, so I
added the PPA, but which version should I install, the GTK or the QT
version? I don't know much about Xubuntu or XFCE, unfortunately, since
I run Gnome on all my other machines.

Kind regards

Subject: Re: AutoKey, Xubuntu

As I recall XFCE4 is GTK2-based, so the GTK version initially makes the
most sense to me. The latest version of autokey-gtk in the PPA has Python
and GTK2 dependencies, most of which you'd likely already have with a
Xubuntu system. The python-kde4 dependency in the 'autokey-qt' package is
going to pull in a lot of KDE stuff that you wouldn't otherwise need. If
that bothers you, use autokey-gtk instead.

Once upon a time, Chris stated<https://groups.google.com/d/topic/autokey-users/HgZ_rmpWNJM/discussion> that
the GTK(2) port would remain supported as long as feasible, but would not
receive new features. If *that* bothers you, install autokey-qt with the
understanding that you'll end up with another 100 MB or so in KDE libraries
on your system as a result. But you get all the latest features.

Either package should techincally *work* on your Xubuntu system, including
the notification area/systray icon, as long as you install the appropriate
XFCE panel plugin that provides a place for the system tray icons to live.

2012/7/17 Kevin <erns...@gmail.com>:

I guess I'll install the GTK version then. About new features, AutoKey
already do what I need, and has for a long time. I'm not an advanced
AutoKey user at all. Mostly doing phrases (like my ”Kind regards”
thing below) and a few simple scripts (like typing date and time).

Thanks for replying.

Kind regards
