On Monday, March 19, Gov. Walker signed several important pieces of disability-related legislation into law: -- lifting the enrollment caps on long-term care programs, including Family Care -- the Seclusion and Restraint bill, limiting seclusion and restraint in schools -- the People First bill, replacing the term "mental retardation" with "intellectual disability" in Wisconsin statute
Thank you to everyone who helped advocate to bring these victories to pass!

This group of adults (18 and over) is comprised mostly of individuals
diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum but is welcoming of anyone who
feels he/she might have an autism spectrum disorder. The group meets to
discuss life issues on the spectrum and support one another in bringing any
pertinent topics to the open meeting format.
*Wednesday, May 23: Autism 101: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
*Midvale Lutheran Community Church, 4329 Tokay Blvd, Madison, WI (Room 131
on main level)
When a child is first diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
most parents aren’t exactly sure what it means. It’s hard to explain your
child to others if you don’t understand him or her yourself. At this
session, learn about ASD, discuss parenting issues and what the Autism
Society can do for you.

For over 50 years, the Autism Society of Greater Madison has been a local
resource for support for individuals and families affected by autism
spectrum disorders. While we serve Madison and Dane county, we also serve 9
surrounding counties. The Greater Madison part of our name does not
necessarily convey this fact regarding our larger reach. For this reason,
many individuals and families in outlying areas do not recognize that we
can provide them help.
As an organization, we have made the decision to *change our name* to
the *Autism
Society of South Central Wisconsin*. We will continue to host all of the
same events and offerings in the hopes that our new name will be more
inclusive of all individuals and families in the areas we serve. We
currently have volunteer coordinators working in counties to organize the
kinds of things we currently provide to the greater Madison community.
Look for our logo which will undergo minimal changes and new merchandise
coming soon!
