Introducing Michael Kusugak

Valerie and Marsha are thrilled to announce that the amazing Arctic writer and storyteller, Michael Kusugak will be coming to Ontario for school and library readings March 19 to 31. He can do up to four one hour sessions in a day and is available weekdays, weekends and some evenings.

His rate is $350.00 per one hour session, but that amount includes his flight from Nunavut. Because Michael must travel from Rankin Inlet he needs a minimum of 30 sessions within a two week tour to make the trip feasible. The $350 hourly rate covers the cost of transportion for visits to either Ottawa or Toronto. For visits outside of those areas, additional standard public transit expenses would apply.

Michael is best known for his picture book, A Promise is a Promise, which he co-authored with Robert Munsch, and also Baseball Bats for Christmas.

Time slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please hit reply to this message asap if you are interested in booking Michael Kusugak.

Meet the author: Jo Ellen Bogart

Jo Ellen Bogart has enjoyed visiting lots pf places in Canada.  Her two artist biographies feature Emily Carr from the west coast and Maud Lewis from the east coast. Jo Ellen finds both coasts fascinating and wants to visit them again and again. Maybe the salt air reminds her of childhood trips to Galveston, in her native Texas.

Jo Ellen is curious about many topics, especially the natural world, and she loves to research different kinds of animals. She and her family built a backyard fishpond where she has photographed the life cycle of the resident toads. Most of these amphibians are descendents of the three toads given to her years ago by author Jean Little.   She also has a large koi who, along with his goldfish friends, winters in the basement freezer that has been lined and made into an indoor tank.

Jo Ellen’s latest book, Out and About with the Big Tree Gang, was co-authored by her daughter Jill, who also produced a bouncing baby boy last spring. The new book relates how the four furry friends (yes, two of them are skunks) have experiences that kids will recognize and relate to.

Newest among Jo Ellen’s creative endeavors is writing lyrics for children’s songs. She is working with singer/song-writer Eddie Douglas creating songs to set toes tapping and hands clapping.  Jo Ellen has gotten kids, as well as grown-ups, up and dancing in her school presentations. A CD featuring a number of works with her lyrics and those of other Canadian children’s authors is slated for an early 2007 release.

Jo Ellen still has slots available this spring for school and library readings. For further details, simply hit reply to this message.

Author Visit Checklist for Educators

We were thrilled with the positive response from teachers and educators that our session on author visits generated. For those of you who were not there, here's a handy checklist to help you plan for your author visits:

Provide your author with:

Contact name:
Name of school or library:
Address with directions or map:
Phone number:
Emergency phone (that the author can call while in transit):

Establish:

What time the author should get to the school.
Where the author should go to sign in.
How many students the author will have in each session/grade level.
Venue for the presentation (classroom, library, auditorium).
Specific topics/books you want the author to cover.
Number of presentations booked and cost per presentation.
Transportation cost.
Does the author charge GST?
Do you want the author to bring books for sale and autograph?
Will the author need you to provide a lunch? (Ask about allergies/restrictions)
Is there anything the author should know about parking restrictions at your school?
Are there any accessibility issues with the school or library that the author should know about and plan for? For example, is your school on a one-way street, or is there construction in the area?

Our question for you:

Would you like a newsletter tailored for your region?

Our weekly newsletter is a generalized one and can take quite awhile to go through and we know that this is frustrating, especially for educators and librarians in outlying areas. If you would like a newsletter specifically for your area, we can do that.

Here's how it would work --

Select one contact person from your board or listserv to act as your liaison. That person should send us an email (simply hit reply to this message) outlining specific needs -- ie -- geographic area, and types of author visits you're interested in. Then whenever we have breaking news about someone coming to your area, we'll pass that on to you.
