A despicable day in Melbourne. 38.3C with thick brown dusty haze - would be horrible for late Feb but just madness getting this in November.

Reminds me of California in summer rather than Victoria in spring....

Am hoping we will see some rain (rather than Virga) shortly.

51 knot gusts and 400m visibility recorded at Tullamarine Airport just before (2:04pm AEST). The vis was actually well below landing minima for all aircraft there and the high intensity approach lighting had to be turned on. Vis has since risen to 3000m at time of writing.

No records broken here yet..possibly because we have had a few gusty storms, but it got to 42.5 before that. Highest (November) was 43.3 in 1982.

Being almost directly south of that airport and under the old flight path, That gust of wind was a cracker.  We live overlooking a huge 60m valley.  All I could see was airborne willy willys full of leaves disappearing into the dust

Hi David,
A rather severe 'dry' thunderstorm crossed Canberra mid afternoon and the down draughts cooled things down before the temperature could break the record at the airport (record was equalled). I drove into South Canberra around 4pm and there was some water around on the roads. A very heavy dust haze and gusty Northwesterly winds continue. The radar seems to show storms to our west are weakening.I expect a record warm Minimum temperature tonight. An interesting pattern developing over Central Australia??

Canberra has been lucky. There are a huge number of 44-46C numbers showing up at lower elevations which is just madness for November.

Thankfully much cooler down here now and its event raining mud. Scary thing is that a back of the envelope calculation suggests we need to average nearly 5C below average for the remainder of the month not to have the hottest November on record for Vic.

Sure looks like it Gavin. The mid/upper low that's proggred to cut off over inland Oz early next week looks pretty marked. Also reflected at the surface. If it hangs around the inland as progged (or drifts slowly west), I think many inland townsfolk will be pretty happy to see some decent falls. Should look good starting to spin up on satellite imagery in a few days I'd imagine.

There's also some signs another similar event might produce a rainband over inland SE Oz later next week but we'll have to wait and see.

I guess you're talking about a record warm minimum for your site; the highest for Canberra Airport (26.0, equal highest for any month) is a pretty tough record to break (although I'm not convinced that one was a genuine 24-hour minimum).

Certainly a mad day weather and fire wise in Canberra yesterday.   Dust, smoke, thunder, lightning rain plus record temps.  I'm wondering whether November might create some sort of record in terms of how far temps exceed averages?  Shall keep a weather eye on this aspect of the record breaking heat.

Dim warming as Variant

I tend to be a bit ho-hum about the breaking of any sort of record...and not just weather ones but in anything. The Guinness Book thrives on them. Of course they are notable at the time, but they will break again. OK maybe heat ones will break more often, but in spite of everything that's said we really don't know. This is not to be taken as a commentary on whether or not we should manage pollution etc etc better (we've always had that responsibility), but rather as a comment that we just panic too much about it all. There's more to live for than worrying ourselves to death (as a lot of people do when the media fire up), especially when, like me, you are over 60 years of age and wanting to make the most of what time remains.

I'll go now..with apologies to Visual Basic..

End Soapbox

Cheers..Keith

Hi Keith,

32 here, and spent much of my life as a polished greeny. In one of the
worst coastal areas to be affected by this drought, the thought of my 7
month old nephew not being able to enjoy simplyboy hood pleasures, like
chasing frogs through wetlands with 2 feet of mud and giving his mum hell
when she's doing the washing is something that I feel is worth fighting for.

I also understand that the changes, especially in the Victorian government
seem to be subject to "memory" or particular environmental "Brand" names.
This is a concern as the memory rate of change seems to be on par with the
environmental change. The masses, don't understand the science and
certainly would prefer to ignore anything that is inconvienient. (pardon
the pun).

So while we look at the hype and confidently second guess it, I think that
we need to keep in mind that fear is the biggest motivator of all, and as
many of you business people will know - if you aim extremely high - you'll
achieve more than if you don't aim at all.

So after watching the travesty called 2012 last night, all this stuff we
need to put in perspective. If it encourages one more person to plant
another tree, we've all got to be better off right?

Cheers

The southernmost coastal fringe of Victoria has got off relatively lightly (if an anomaly of +6 can be considered 'lightly') from this month's heat. Some of it might even miss out on a record hot November; I doubt if many other parts of the state will.

As of yesterday Murray Bridge and Roseworthy were running 6.2 degrees ahead of their record high monthly mean maximum for November. While a cool couple of days with the current rain event will put a bit of a dent in the figure, the mean temperature for November so far would, if it happened in January, rank fourth-highest on record for SA, and 12th for Victoria.

Hi Marcus , sorry I accidentally deleted your reply.

I'm all for planting trees, but the use of fear in this issue is to me totally wrong. And please note that what follows is not meant to apply to any individuals who post here, rather it is simply some of my thoughts on the principles that I think are relevant in the wider sense, and I'm not asking anyone to agree with me.

Fear is a good servant but a bad master. History shows us that. As an example of it being a good servant, parents use a certain amount in teaching their kids to behave..such as being grounded for a week. The police and the court system use the fear of punishment to make us a law-abiding community. These are proper and appropriate boundaries and there are countless other good examples as we all know. We need them.

As a bad master, the communists and the Nazis used fear to enslave, coerce, brainwash or wipe out millions last century...to say nothing of previous generations.

I don't believe fear in the hands of any particular group is good. Why should we trust the group to use it wisely? Are they some form of higher level of humanity? When you look around, all humanity is fallen, it practises evil on every level, of which environmental damage is but one. How can any group be trusted with it?

Right behaviour, including environmental management, starts within us, not from outside of us. If we don't want to change, then that's free choice. I'm not saying we shouldn't change, but you don't go around forcing people into accepting one point of view or another. That's the preserve of fanatical cults..and I know what those are; my older brother was a member of one for 50 years until he died a short time ago. Try and persuade people, yes, but if we can't, or they won't go along with us on the journey , we must change ourselves, not arrogantly assume we own all the facts on any issue and that we have some almighty right of control over them. Because that's what the assertion of fear (in this context) is, in my view.

I hope people understand what I'm trying to say.

Keith, I completely agree with you and I think that the key here is to find
the correct balance.

Unfortunately, In my sometimes skewed experience, the "pave paradise and put
up a parking lot" rings too true at times. And I must admit sometimes I
enjoy the sensationalist media, knowing full well that mildly conscious joe
and mary blogs will put somewhat more weighted pressure than a greeny; on an
organization like Melbourne Water to put aside there Friday night drinks for
"Responsible", and for some species; life threatening decisions. Notibly
Australia has the highest mammal extinction rate in the modern world, which
can be argued till the cows come home.

The other side to this stuff is that senior management in these
organizations are still considered to be old school financially motivated
dinosaurs, frustrating the passion from dedicated entry level people.

With passion being removed, I think a little fear in the media limited to
this subject; will in fact have a positive impact.

I also believe that fear can somewhat be used effectively at a media level
on some issues because Australians do in fact have a solid understanding of
free speech, and have the ability to decide whether the information they are
presented with rings true for them.

I certainly understand where you are coming from, however perhaps we should
consider the long term impact of this sensationalism on the masses.

Cheers

Don't mean to be rude Marcus. I haven't seen 2012. Are you saying that 2012,
that's the end of us? Sounds a bit like you got a scare from "the Movie".

12th of the 12th 2012 sounds corny to me. Maybe Friday the 13th 2013 may
have been a better choice. Grin.

They did start up the Collider again today so who knows :-))

Visual Basic is a programming language for Windows, written by Micro$oft.

It should be End Sub by the way Keith ;)

A despicable day in Melbourne. 38.3C with thick brown dusty haze - would
be horrible for late Feb but just madness getting this in November.

Reminds me of California in summer rather than Victoria in spring....

Am hoping we will see some rain (rather than Virga) shortly.

November 1997.Relative humidity is 19%.We have thin cirrus and thick dust
haze although so far not as thick as yesterday. The Northerly has picked up
to 25 km/hr. and gusty.

No no not at all. Travesty being the science of allowing a light aircraft
to firstly be ingulfed by a claustic eruption cloud, and then dropping down
a gear and to out run it - without a scratch. (to name just one).

Well on a much lighter note, my Guage is sitting on 70mm from last night,
the creek down below is in full flood, and I suspect if Macedon got the
ninety you did clyve, there could be some tickling of trout in keilors dusty
fields over the coming days.

Gosh that's a lot of rain especially with the hot winds ahead of the
system..hope it keeps coming. Could do with some up here. The heat's
knocking people out.

Haven't seen 2012 and probably wouldn't bother..it is only Hollywood and
money-making. There's a stupid, space-wasting thread on Weatherzone on 2012
in general. People have nothing better to do but seriously believe such
tommy-rot. I can't understand humans sometimes. If I were a moderator there
I'd be agitating to close it..must be in grumpy old fart mode. A movie is
one thing, but to think it will actually happen..sorry, I don't fit.
