Hi Marcus , sorry I accidentally deleted your reply.
I'm all for planting trees, but the use of fear in this issue is to me totally wrong. And please note that what follows is not meant to apply to any individuals who post here, rather it is simply some of my thoughts on the principles that I think are relevant in the wider sense, and I'm not asking anyone to agree with me.
Fear is a good servant but a bad master. History shows us that. As an example of it being a good servant, parents use a certain amount in teaching their kids to behave..such as being grounded for a week. The police and the court system use the fear of punishment to make us a law-abiding community. These are proper and appropriate boundaries and there are countless other good examples as we all know. We need them.
As a bad master, the communists and the Nazis used fear to enslave, coerce, brainwash or wipe out millions last century...to say nothing of previous generations.
I don't believe fear in the hands of any particular group is good. Why should we trust the group to use it wisely? Are they some form of higher level of humanity? When you look around, all humanity is fallen, it practises evil on every level, of which environmental damage is but one. How can any group be trusted with it?
Right behaviour, including environmental management, starts within us, not from outside of us. If we don't want to change, then that's free choice. I'm not saying we shouldn't change, but you don't go around forcing people into accepting one point of view or another. That's the preserve of fanatical cults..and I know what those are; my older brother was a member of one for 50 years until he died a short time ago. Try and persuade people, yes, but if we can't, or they won't go along with us on the journey , we must change ourselves, not arrogantly assume we own all the facts on any issue and that we have some almighty right of control over them. Because that's what the assertion of fear (in this context) is, in my view.
I hope people understand what I'm trying to say.
