Hi Jane and all in the Group.
I have had a Davis Vintage Pro 2 for a few years now and I am quite happy with its peformance. I run the data output into Virtual Weather Station which goes on line to Weather Underground . I download the data to  Weather Link 5.9.0 exe.every couple of days . At varying intervals the output stops and I get a message that the programe can not connect with the Davis and to check Com port or cable connection and reboot if problem persists. I have to reboot to start the PC programe . When this situaion happens I can not access either programe without rebooting .
I have placed all the power supplies to the computer, monitor and the Vintage Pro on a seperate power supply from the rest of my Office equipment .There is a surge protector on the powerpoint . I had discovered  that switching on equipment or even running the shredder for example, caused the  weather programe to stop runnning.
I am interested to know whether anyone can suggest a solution. I will be away overseas later this year and should the connection to the Vintage Pro drop out while I am away, there is no way I can restart it. Any ideas are very welcome!!!
Cheers,
Gavin

Hi Gavin,

we have found that the Davis consoles and Weatherlink dataloggers can be very sensitive to current fluctuations especially with anything which uses a remote controller...eg: central heating, shredders, printers (Clyve's used to stop communicating, not when you turned the printer on, but only when you turned it off).

W got around the problem when away by installing a remote log in program (www.logmein.com) on the laptop / ipad or iphone for hen we are travelling so that I can log in a reboot the computer from anywhere in the world...but we found that when we are away and no-one is using the computer or anything in the house, the weather station ran without fail except when there were power outages in town.  To get around this problem, you go into your BIOS settings and set your computer to wake for all instances, this means that if you have a power outage, as soon as there is a trickle feed of power back through the circuits, the computer will wake, allowing you to log in from elsewhere to restart the weather station.

This system has worked brilliantly for us for the last 2 years, and I can reboot the computer and restart the weather program using my iphone as well.

Please let me know if I can give you further details.  I haven't worked out how to fix the problem, but have worked out how to get around it. It's a fairly common problem unfortunately and happens with the wireless models...

I feed data from the data logger into Cumulus and I don’t seem to have any problem with dropping out the link to the Vantage Pro 2 weather station. I have central heating and a printer microwave etc.

Regards,

Greg

Slightly tangential, but I have started puting together a site for personal weather station data at http://anero.id.au/ (the 3 green dots on the map are PWSs - my station is at http://anero.id.au/ada-street/). This may be of interest to folks who are looking for an alternative to the US based sites.

It doesn't necessarily offer anything over the other sites but is perhaps a little more succinct (omits the longer-term stuff which is available in the station software itself) and works well as a pseudo mobile app (in conjunction with a browser and a home screen shortcut).

For anyone who's interested, the prerequisite at present is that you are/can upload data files (at an interval of your choosing) to a web accessible location. I should be in a position to provide a location in the not too distant future.

Hi Andrew,
I currently download my Met Data to Weather Underground but I am very keen to see a more local website for our data. I know there are quite a few private weather stations here in Canberra.I am also keen for the AMOS (Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society ) site to have weather stations data on it- that is a work in progress!
Keep me in the loop please. While I am IT illiterate, my son, like many youg people  is in the IT field and knows much!!
Cheers,
Gavin
