Cloud-free area NE of Tasmania in SW wind stream

The current satellite loop (10 a.m.) shows a striking clearing of speckled cloud in the lea of the south-westerly windstream moving across Tasmania.
The effect could correspond to a rain shadow if the incoming clouds were producing precipitation.

Hi Max,
That situation is not unusual as the lower levels of the airmass dries out in descending the lee slopes of the Highlands and the airmass is stable .Actually this area is in rain shadow with westerlies due to the Fhon Effect. I have seen similar patterns off the NSW coast with westerlies - a clear zone sometimes out to 100 kilometres, then convection kicks in over the warm East Australian Current with cu/cb if unstable or Sc if the air is stable.
