I started experiencing intermittent long connect times or actual
time-outs about 3-4 weeks ago. My subjective observation is it's worse
during the daytime, but maybe not. Connections are either lightning
fast or painfully slow.
I attributed it to a few misconfigured servers at Yahoo, connect time
depending on which server I happened to hit. But there has been no
outcry over at the dslreports.com AT&T Southwest forum and there
certainly would be if the problem were that widespread.
So I've been assuming it's something with my setup: modem, router or SSL
related. I limit my workday checking of email to every 90 minutes or
so, having to reconnect after the first time-out isn't that big a deal.
It almost always works for me on the first or second try, I haven't
had time to go into full debug mode.

I rarely use the email that comes with DSL through AT&T. I just tried
it, though (server: pop.att.yahoo.com) and the 22 junk emails that AT&T
sent to me all came through at a fast clip.

Sounds more like you have a bad modem.

Based on:
"I get timed out connections constantly. It works
sometimes, but not nearly enough to depend on it for anything of any
value." And "Reinitializing the modem by any means other than the
power switch does not fix the problem."
There's a big difference between "constantly" and "14 out of 15 days". I
was going by your
first reports, and what you reported then sounds like a bad modem. I
withdraw that, based
on your changing story (ahhh, flashback to Tech Support days.) Good luck.

You might not be as off as you think. I'm a longtime ATT DSL
customer and since day one my modem has refused to reconnect manually
if it loses its connection. That's very infrequent, but when it does I
need to power cycle and sometimes log in and manually go through the
setup process (supply logins and serial numbers, etc.)

Since I switched to their U-Verse fiber-optic internet connection, I've zero
problems. Nice and fast, good throughput. Me likee.
I haven't switched because AT&T insists that it can't run a seperate
pair for Uverse and MUST use my existing pair. That means I'd have to give
up my existing connection while they installed it and until it stabilized.
I'm not willing to do that :-)

I'm not sure what that means. They did my installation in about an hour and
a half,
Including replacing the ancient, worn out terminal box, running an ethernet
cable
around the house, etc. Since I work from home quite a bit, I couldn't have
much down time.
I don't want them to cut my old DSL service until uverse has been up
and running for a while. ATT insists they can't do that because DSL and Uverse
both use "the telphone wires". I want them to use a second pair - like for
a second line - and install both. They "can't", and I don't want to chance
being offline for weeks while they work it out.
