I am doing research for a national television program, "TV Nation." I am
trying to find towns around the country that claim to be #1 in something.
For example, Vernon, Florida is #1 in self-mutilation, for insurance
claims. Gainsville, Georgia is #1 in poultry production. Claims should be
wacky, ridiculous and interesting.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

A couple of years ago, Austin was number one in per-capita spending
on books, well ahead of #2 (Madison, Wisconsin).  Something like
$190/person.

Not as wacky as being #1 in self-mutilation, but I've got my pocket
knife here...

I think you'll find that the stat is much higher for per capita book
purchases.  Call the Statesman, they may have these stats.

Llano, TX says they are the "Der Hunting Capitol of the World". I don't know
if they are exactly #1 in something or if they just thought it sounded good. I
suppose it's not that wacky or interesting either... unless you are a deer.

I think they should be called the "Precambrian Rock Formations Capitol of the
World" (Llano Uplift), but that probably would not get very far <g>.

Austin is too laid-back to claim to be number one in anything.  There's
no cultural imperative to muster the effort.

TV Nation rocks.  Are you really moving to Fox?  Are you ever going to
air the episode about the anti-abortionists who openly advocate murder
and violence in their political battle?

It doesn't necessarly require effort to be number one in some things.

Perhaps we are number one in per capita population of surviving hippies.

Perhaps we are number one in immigrants from silicon vally.

Perhaps we are number one in the per capita musician/artist population.

Inquiring minds want to know.

It can't be much worse than most of the other drivle that floods the
airwaves.
