The first time I visited someone at the Hotel San Jose (on S.
Congress) I was impressed enough by the landscaping to ask at the desk
who was responsible: Big Red Sun. Nice job.
Besides the basic skills, a landscape designer needs to have a sense
of style that's a match for your own vision. What I'd suggest, Mike,
is that you stop by Barton Springs Nursery (or any large
retail/wholesale nursery whose plants you like) and ask for their list
of landscapers. Call as many as you can, ask about their credentials,
and where you can see examples of their work. Look for a designer
whose clients are enthusiastic about showing off their yards and
gardens. Pick the ones you like best and go with one of those
designers. That's what I'd do, if I were in your shoes.
Can you give us some examples of areas where she has been incorrect? I'm
not arguing with your assessment - just curious.

Oh, I knew about the Kevin Woods Landscape connection, but I was never under
any pressure to use them. I let them bid on installation and plants, but
I passed and did the work myself. I have the plans and the recommended
plants list that I've since used as a guideline.
I didn't recall seeing or hearing much about Big Red Sun until recently.
I live within 10 minutes of Barton Springs Nursery, so most of my gardening
needs are close by. After looking for more information on Big Red Sun, I
stumbled onto Tom Spencer's Austin gardening links site that people might find
useful (though it's probably already been mentioned here):
