I like Pho Cong Ly: their broth is nice and rich, they have a good variety
of ingredients (with the peppers sliced nice and thin). Service is very
quick and efficient, if not always gushingly friendly. And it qualifies as
a Value Meal, <= $5 with tip, if you drink water.
Rainbow North needs some work, IMO. The tacky makeover from a Mexican
restaraunt is easy to forgive, but the foul smelling shrimp and bland
buffet offerings are not. A big disappointment to me on my two visits.

I can vouch for the Bun (vermicelli noodles) and the Cha Gio
(Vietnamese eggrolls)... most of my friends are Pho addicts.
Anyone comment on Pho at Kim Son?
Friendly, fast service. Decor a bit unnerving, but that's par
for the strip-mall course.

But don't you know that we in South Austin are culinarily
deprived? When a new restaurant opens, it's invariably
central, which is cool, but then its children are up NW...
Brick Oven, Z-Tejas, La Madeleine ... the list goes
on. THERE ARE HUNGRY PEOPLE IN SOUTH AUSTIN!
Motorola Oak Hill alone employs several thousand folks.
Several thousand *well paid* people at that. Add to it, the
folks that live in Circle-C, Legend Oaks, employees from AMD
and all the people who live along 290 and 71.
The lack of decent restaurants in South Austin is a frequent
topic of conversation around the office as well as with my fiance'
and myself.
Just my 2 cents...

Where is this place? A street address would be nice...
Thanks,

Amy, I admit that if you must be restricted, central Austin is probably
your best bet in terms of restaurants. Beyond that, I think South Austin
actually has more interesting choices:
Let's see,
El Sol y La Luna--good soups (next to Austin Motel, S Congress)
Guero's--near Terra Toys (S Congress)
Magnolia Cafe--only south (S Congress) or central (Lake Austin Blvd)
Borinquen--only Puerto Rican jazz and food in town (far S Congress)
Phoenicia Bakery--still making their chicken sandwich w/garlic mayo?
Taj Palace--only south (Brodie Oaks) or central (Highland Village)
Rainbow Seafood Restaurant--many consider their dim sum the best
Hao Hao--plus a number of decent Asian restaurants on Wm Cannon.
Austin Gourmet Market--fine Mediterranean specialties (E Oltorf)
And if you're all the way out to the "Y", you're closer to the Salt Lick
barbecue than most of Austin!
Seriously, though, it depends on how far south you're talking and how far
you're willing to drive; it may be true that there are a greater number
of corporate restaurants in far north (past 183/Research) Austin than far
south (past Ben White) Austin. But is that really a bad thing?!
Seoul Sushi Bar- best tuna in town, IMNSHO.
Evita's- Easily in the top three mexican (leaning toward traditional rather
than strict texmes) places in town.
Thai Kitchen- Damn that native thai is strong. :-)
Seoul & Evitas are next door to each other on the west side of S. 1st street
between Stassney & Cannon.
Thai Kitchen is in the shopping center at the intersection of I-35 & Cannon.

WOW!
Where? Exactly where? I will be one of the FIRST customers.
I am VERY fond of the Texicalli Grille on E. Oltorf Street. Great
sandwiches, interesting salads, and very friendly service. I have eaten
here literally hundreds of times and it is by far and away my favorite
place. I also like the Mandy Mercier live show on Friday early evenings.

I've pretty much tried all the Vietnamese restaurants serving pho in town
but Kim Phung is still my favorite choice after all these years (4?) .
Yes, it's crowded and slow at times, but I've never had a bad meal or bad
service there.
