Great new (for me) lunch spot: FoodHeads

until the new building is finished. I fired up Citysearch and typed
"lunch". 3rd spot on the list (sorted by distance from my house) was
FoodHeads (http://austin.citysearch.com/profile/10208695?raid=173076).
It seemed interesting, so he headed over there. It was very tasty and
the place is uber Austin, funky-cool and very laid-back. We will
definitely be going back there. Does anybody know if it gets crowded
during the week for lunch?

So how would this change, in your view of a sandwich shop that "cares about
vegetarian business"? Does it involve stopping somewhere in the middle to
make sure you're wearing the proper PETA-approved scratchy-fiber attire with
Birkies, or have renewed your subscription to Vegetarian Times? I can't
see the part where it becomes magically vegetarian, it's freakin' foodstuffs
jammed between two pieces of bread for $deity's sake!
(I'm asking because I'm genuinely curious)

The best veggie place in Austin in terms of how good the food is, IMNSHO,
is West Lynn Cafe. They have some pasta dishes that'll make you think you
*died* and went to Veggie Heaven. :-)

Do yourself a large favor on your next visit/upon your arrival after the
move and head straight on over to West Lynn Cafe. Great food.

Step 2 would have veggie alternatives to meat, like a portabella
mushroom or a soy burger, like that.

I think they do have mushrooms as an option, as well as roasted
eggplant. Is a burger a sandwich?

Also a carnivore, but I love the "veggie" sandwiches at Brick Oven,
Subway, and Shady Grove.
There is or was an establishment in the first floor of the Four Seasons
(I think, a Texas French Bread, or similar local bakery) that served a
sandwich made of sliced eggplant with roasted red peppers and brie on a
toasted baguette.
That's my idea of a "veggie" sandwich . . .

I'm a meat eater myself, and my favorite veggie food is the spinach
lasagna at Mother's. Second favorite would probably be a dish over
at Veggie Heaven that has Hoisin sauce.

Battered fried mushrooms and the fried squash at the Texicalli Grille on
Oltorf Street. Both are wonderful. Their home made onion rings are also
heavenly veggies.

People deep-fry chicken fried steak? I always assumed it was pan fried,
since it's basically the same as a milanesa de pollo.

Sorry, that's milanesa de res. If it was chicken fried chicken breast,

I would say most chicken fried steaks are deep fried....a pan fried chicken fry
looks pretty greasy, the batter doesn't puff up and look flaky and tends to not
be uniform in color...fine at home but not good for IHOP or
Denny's....Threadgills and Hill's (major austin purveyors of CFS) definitely
deep fry.
The old Stallion(25 years ago) on Lamar pan fried them but I haven't seen a
place that does it that way since then. I am sure there are some small
restaurants that do, but the labor and ease of deep frying makes it SOP at most
restaurants.

Every CFS my family served me was pan-fried, but a lot of restaurants
use fryers. At Braum's (hamburger/ice cream in north TX) you pulled
a pre-breaded CFS from the freezer and dropped it in the fryer. I
don't know about the restaurant mentioned in this thread, or how
ubiquitous the deep-frying is beyond fast food.
