2 questions:

- When did Parker Street in Penrith become the main north-south
arterial through Penrith carrying The Northern Road traffic, and
replace Bringelly Road (south) and Richmond Road (north)?

and

- When was the Mulgoa Road deviation connecting Castlereagh Road at
High Street opened? I've managed to isolate it to be sometime between
1985 and 1989.

Cheers
Andrew

1. Government Gazette of 2/2/1968 altered the proclamation of Main Road No. 154 to run via Parker Street, rather than via the Kingswood level crossing. I think the actual physical works might have been opened to traffic in 1965/66 but am not 100% sure.

2. 1985/86 Annual Report (p.25) mentions that it was completed during that financial year.

the overpass of the main west railway done at that time also? there is
a house on the corner of high street and parker street that is well
bellow road level

Parts of Parker Street are very old, probably dating from the earliest subdivisions in the area. The sections between Maxwell Street and Jamison Road, and north of Glebe Place, weren't constructed until the mid 60s to provide that through route. The bridge over the rail line was also upgraded at this time. I'm not sure when it was first built but it appears on the 1943 aerial photographs and looks like a single lane bridge. From memory, I think it is also shown in the 1934 Gregory's but I'd have to check to be certain.

Not in 1934 1st ed. Gregory's. Because coverage only went as far west as Toongabbie.

BTW ... Hey everyone ... don't tell Musa this, but ... *whispers* ellow-yay ines-lay!

I just saw the old alignment of Mulgoa Road after looking it up on Google Maps so I could understand all the places mentioned in this thread better; dragged the Street View peg man onto the old alignment, and lo and behold, yellow lines!

Thanks Sam, I knew you would have the info!

Also, I must come in here a lot more often than once every 6 or so weeks. :)

A photo has appeared on Facebook showing the old bridge on Parker Street - date unknown but obviously prior to the mid 1960s upgrade:

Thanks to Jodie Mclelland
