Interesting. So will this eventually become part of the Perth-Darwin Hwy?

Yes. Sensibly it will start from the Reid/Tonkin junction, not the Reid/Lord St junction.

As far as I can see they are going to build it in one hit from Reid Hwy to Muchea.

MRWA has a good record at building highways in one hit too.

When I moved to WA in 07, the only indication the Bunbury-Perth Highway was planned to be built was a sign at Lake Clifton. It said construction will start sometime in 2008.

Construction did start, and it was about 12 to 14 months from start to completion: 75 km of dual carriageway with over 10 bridges. There's no chance road projects on the east coast move so quickly, even less here in Canberra.

Would be interested to read some thoughts on what we think should happen in terms of route numbering once this project goes ahead.

Info, for those not Perth-minded:

Start: Reid (SR3)/Tonkin (SR4) junction
Route: Northwards alongside Beechboro Rd (SR53) to Gnangara Rd (SR84) then curves north east to skirt Ellenbrook, then running parallel to the existing GNH (NR1/NH95) past Bullsbrook, joining the highway in the vicinity of Muchea.
End: Not exactly sure but I assume it will be just north of the Brand Hwy (NR1) signals

the biggest implication is how does this affect NR1 and NH95? Should they both be routed onto the new bypass and the GNH renumbered? Perhaps NR1 remains on the old and NH95 goes onto the new? Perhaps SR4 is simply extended northward and we have a similar situation to the NR1/SR2 arrangement around Mandurah?

SR4 is obviously the easiest option is it involves minimal thinking and minimal changes to existing signs, however I'm not entirely sold on the idea.

Thoughts?

Hey Sam,

It would be good if the NR1/NH95 duplex could be done away with. Which in theory could be less of a problem is WA adopted alphanumeric numbering.

I think you could have NR1 kept on the old route, and NH95 shifted to the new. Otherwise if alphas were used, M1 would be better in my opinion, with A95 starting at Muchea and A1 going along Brand Hwy.

The big problem I see is the desire to not break Highway 1, though this has been done in Adelaide.

At the end of the day, WA route numbers need an overhaul. There's been many changes and decommissions, and the system is becoming fragmented, and holds a lot of legacy numbers. The classic example of course is Kwinana / Mitchell Fwy, anywhere else this would be an NR or NH, and being close to the coast, Highway 1.

SR4 Makes the most sense to me. Probably call it Tonkin Hwy as well.
