The creek is a bit of a giveaway... Correct answer to include the name of the road and the closest town/locality.

Doesn't count, you didn't include the name of the road or closest town :p

Beautiful scene! Haven't done this road before, or been to Captains Flat

Please tell me you took that photo, Choko, because you saw the creek name and thought of old mate BSD

I'll pay Musa's Google Map answer :)

CKF, Captains Flat is an interesting little place, worth a visit. Apparently named after a cow named Captain who'd graze on the nearby banks of the Molonglo River... The drive from Bredbo to Captains Flat via Jerangle and back to Queanbeyan/ACT is a bit of a detour and is totally different from the landscapes experienced on the Monaro Hwy.

And yes, first thing I thought of when passing that sign was our old mate. However, I'd love to know the origin of the name "Ballinafad" - sounds Middle Eastern but I'm sure the name probably originates from elsewhere.

This brings back the memories ...

In 1986 when I was eight my Aunty and her husband took me, my brother and their two kids to the snow. We stayed at my uncle's relatives at Sussex Inlet both ways. On the way down we went via NR1 and NR18 to Cooma. On the way back my uncle looked at a map and decided to take the short cut via Jerangle, Braidwood and NR52.

The only map we had was one of those beautiful old monochrome NRMA sheet maps - you remember the ones, with a different colour for each regional map, most of the text in Gill Sans of varying weight? I still have some in my collection, albeit rather fragile.

Anyway, the map quite clearly showed this thriving metropolis called Jerangle. It was very late in the afternoon when we left Cooma, with four winging and very hungry kids aged from 4 to 8 in the back of the VB Commodore. We were low on fuel too. My uncle would call out the odometer readings ... Jerangle, getting ever closer to Jerangle ... Food, a chance to run around and escape the crammed back seat while we got petrol, a respite from being bounced around by one of the worst dirt roads I've ever been on.

Then we got to Jerangle. A closed general store, half a dozen houses ... And that was it. We didn't even stop. I still recall the disappointment and surprise for everyone in the car. The map showed a town, damn it, and this wasn't a town! We joked about Jerangle for years afterwards.

I don't remember Captain's Flat, though we must have passed through it. I do clearly remember Braidwood where we turned right to get to Batemans Bay. I went there again in 2002 and it hadn't changed a bit. Also remember almost hitting a kangaroo. That would have been a disaster because I don't remember passing any other vehicle for hours after Bredbo!

I also remember in the middle of nowhere what seemed to be some sort of massive factory complex with brilliant lights in the distance surrounded by a security fence. It was some place after Jerangle, because the sun was still up (just) at Jerangle and the sky was much darker when I passed this place. I think it was on the right hand side. I remember thinking it was unusual for there to be such a large facility in the middle of nowhere. Any ideas what this place could have been?
