Here is a challenge to all you-tv heads out there!

Imagine if you could decide what was to be scheduled on the telly (even
for just one week) what would you choose? I am talking free-to-air tv
here. Can you name:

a: the top 5 shows you would like to see (back?) on air?
b: the top 5 shows you would never allow back on air?
c: the types or genre of shows most neglected?
d: the types of programmes you could most do without?
e: the sort of movies your station would broadcast?

No doubt more categories will be added as responses start to come in.

and as this is my question, I will make it that this is a sports-free
zone. The kind of channel to help sports hating tv addicts get through
the Olympic Games..(this is one programmer not afraid of letting her
biased view get in the way!)

Please contribute, I am really interested in hearing how everyone would
improve television, given the chance...

Melody.

(ones that aren't currently planned to come back on)

Dr Who
The Games (the ABC one)
Babylon 5 repeats
Millenium
Blakes 7

> b: the top 5 shows you would never allow back on air?

The Footy Show and all variations thereof
World's Greatest Anything
Ally McBeal (at least in part because they over-advertise it)
90210
A Current Affair

> c: the types or genre of shows most neglected?

Well, sf, naturally. But I would like to see more quality wildlife
documentaries. And _much_ more science. There's got to be more
interesting science programming out there than just Quantum.

> d: the types of programmes you could most do without?

Footy Show ones. I don't mind broadcasts of sport - I mean, people do want
to watch it, after all - but I resent incredibly having sport on _every_
channel at the same time. I think that should be against the Rules. I
could also live without soap operas and anything which involves an address
or advertisement of the Liberal party. [Wiping out political
advertisements altogether would be a good thing.]

> e: the sort of movies your station would broadcast?

Probably a lot of anime, since I haven't seen enough of it, yet. "Aliens"
would be shown at least once a day. :) And a few of these interesting
"World" movies, which I never get to see, like "Ridicule".

> No doubt more categories will be added as responses start to come in.

f: If you were to commission a tv show for your station to broadcast, what
would it be?

[I think mine would be an sf&f review one - looking at upcoming stuff in
the genre - merely because I know that it's particularly hard to produce a
good sf show...]

And what is wrong with the Stefan Awards? I think they are an essential
public service that should be shown, hell, it should be networked nationwide
instead of just seen only in Queensland. Its a comedy spectacular, maybe
thecomedychannel on Foxtel could show it sometime. Whenever I unfortunately
ever stumble onto it I get transfixed and glued to it as it reminds of how
not to make a television program, whoops sorry, I mean 2 hour TV commercial.
I just sit there with my jaw dropped to the ground in disgust as well. A
whole Stefan channel on pay tv could be a possibility!!!! There would be at
least 20 years of the shit in the QTQ Channel Nine Brisbane archives that
could be aired all back to back including those 1950's style 5 minute
advertorials shown at 10.55 on weekday mornings on QTQ. Comon Rupert/Kerry,
give the viewers what they want!!!!

Top 5 - Thunderbirds!
- ANY of the following Cartoons : Astro Boy, Transformers,
G-Force, Star Blazers, Uylessis 31 ( can't spell it ) & I guess Thundercats.
- Dukes of Hazzard :p
- Bottom!
- & finally ummm....old WWF stuff from about 1985 onwards ( when
they had all the *good* wrestlers :p )

Top 5 I'd hate to see again -

- Alley McBeele
- Pigs Breakfast
- ( not really a TV show but ) - That TARN-OFF ad that's been
running for about 15 years now!!!
- ANY ' live ' Horse-Racing ( that dosen't mean I'd rather watch
dead horses btw )
- Channel 9's Late night news - just makes everyone wait for any
Star Trek/Babylon 5 stuff to come on.

Neglected Genre - Ummm...sports shows that show *interesting* sports like
Monster Truck Racing, or Extreme downhill mountain-bikes, or ummm....well
can't think of any more cos they don't show them so I dont know what else
there is!

Types of shows could do without - Anything with Angela Bishop in it ( apart
from the Panel obviously )

Sorts of Movies on my channel - Action/sci-fi/comedy/horror/ NO ' diesease
of the week ' stuff & proabably NO black & white stuff unless it's Godzilla
or something.

Channel to help sport-haters get through the olympics - 24 hr. Porn channel
running for the durtaion of the games! - see who gets the most ratings :p

jules asner... by far the most interesting of any infotainment show i have
ever seen)
dilbert (never seen it but im sure its just as crap as the cartoon... and
would clear up more space on tv)

> c: the types or genre of shows most neglected?

science fiction
gross medical documentaries
interest pieces on psychologically sound, single, healthy, heterosexual,
young white males (age 18-35)

Back on air:
Inspector Morse/The Sweeney (anything with John Thaw)
Maigret/Z Cars - all the excellent Brit stuff that I saw as a child
Prime Suspect
Lipstick on my Collar - a reprise of all the Dennis Potter series
Howard's Way (we were never shown the last series even though Auntie said
at the time, that it would be shown out here)

Off air:
All American sugary sitcoms, except for Dharma and Greg and Frasier
All American dramas, except for Law and Order and The Practise
All American soaps
All subtitled sex films on SBS that go under the guise of arty films (who
does the programming on that network and he is a forty and over male?)
All commercials appearing during kids cartoon shows that flog rubbish to
undiscerning children

I would want Auntie to get more federal funding so that they can
reinvigorate their excellent drama productions (forget Dog's Head Bay
please - is it a comedy?)....and more money for their brilliant docos and
life stories (Inside Story and also Australian Story) not forgetting the
excellent docos that feature on SBS.

Anyone remember a series of real life operations on the ABC years ago?

Rob

.... and back to the thread... I'd put Tony Squires and WLIIA on FTA.

1. Highlander: The Series & Highlander: The Raven (which has never seen the
light of day in Oz)
2. Buffy (new series, and the old episodes replayed as well) & Angel (the
spinoff)
3. A whole bunch of my favourite cartoons (Dilbert, Animaniacs, new Simpsons
(and one I've never seen: Sam 'n' Max), etc)
4. The Star Wars trilogy would be shown at least once a day, back-to-back.
5. Cold Squad (a Canadian show available only on pay tv here)

> b: the top 5 shows you would never allow back on air?

1. anything sports-related
2. anything that has worlds worst/best/greatest/funniest/etc in it.
3. I would personally ensure that hey hey would never be on again, even if I
had to kill the host, and anyone who tried to bring it back <g>
4. The Nanny
5. anything about cute things kids say

> c: the types or genre of shows most neglected?

Sci fi, scientific shows, cartoons about labratory mice trying to take over
the world

> d: the types of programmes you could most do without?

anything that doesn't have nudity or comedy in it.....lol
anything that has crap acting, but not to the point of being enjoyable
eg, Home and Away

shows that you can't distinguish from the ad break
(yep, those damn commercials shows)

> e: the sort of movies your station would broadcast?

Highlander (there IS only one movie)
Star Wars
Pulp Fiction UNEDITED (has anyone seen that joke channel 7 keeps claiming is
Pulp Fiction?)
anything with mindless sex and violence
