never told before, from the perspective of its first people. First
Australians explores what unfolds when the oldest living culture in
the world is overrun by the worlds greatest empire.
Over seven episodes, First Australians depicts the true stories of
individuals - both black and white - caught in an epic drama of
friendship, revenge, loss and victory in Australias most
transformative period of history.
The story begins in 1788 in Sydney, with the friendship between an
Englishmen (Governor Phillip) and a warrior (Bennelong) and ends in
1993 with Koiki Mabo legal challenge to the foundation of Australia.

first Australians of Victoria at the time Wurundjeri clan leader Simon
Wonga seeks land from the authorities. He soon gives up and leads his
people to the banks of the Yarra River, claiming a parcel of land,
Coranderrk. With the help of a Scottish preacher, and inspired by the
farming practices of the settlers, the community prospers - until the
authorities step in and resist self determination. (Commissioned by

There is No Other Law - Throughout the history of white settlement,
individual white men, good and bad, have significantly affected the
first Australians. Supported by pastoralists keen to make their
fortune, the homicidal police officer Constable Willshire, brings
mayhem to the Arrernte nation in Central Australia. With the
authorities turning a blind eye, the telegraph operator Frank Gillen
stops him. Gillen's other legacy is comprehensive records of the

Community Consultation
A significant part of the process has been consultation with the
descendents of those stories we are telling. This has been a thorough
process of;
> checking the content of scripts, usually face to face
> seeking permission to film in locations
> showing the rough cut of the film for comment
> showing the film at fine cut
As Indigenous filmmakers it has been a priority to ensure the cultural
content and the rights of Indigenous people to the respect of this
material is considered throughout. These rights are known as
Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights.
"When SBS first came to ask me if I were interested in doing a major
documentary series on Indigenous history I enthusiastically agreed
although I had no idea what it would be. I approached my business
partner Darren Dale, and he also readily agreed. All we knew is that
it would be bigger than anything we had done before.
In making First Australians it has been common for many to ask why
hasn't this story been told? The truth is these stories have been
told, at least in print, by the historians we feature in our series.
There is more being written all the time and there is a substantial
body of work to be found in good libraries if you have the interest.
Although First Australians cannot hope to be as comprehensive as the
work of these historians, it will provide the public (in the comfort
of their own homes), a taste of the story that remains to be
understood. Hopefully it will spark national interest in the people on
whose lands we have made our homes."

The first Australians and the British, the most powerful Empire in
history, come face to face in Sydney on January 26, 1788. Their
differences are immense but apprehension quickly turns to curiosity.
Friendships form, some between powerful men such as Governor Arthur
Phillip and the Aboriginal Bennelong. But by the time this pair leave
for London three years later, relations between the two races have
soured. The bloodshed worsens as settlers spread out across the land.

This series has been a revelation; particularly tonight's, about
Victoria. I feel ashamed that I didn't know any of this history and
angry at our education system that 'left it out'. I found tonight's
episode very moving and kept thinking "what if???" and comparing the
genocide and destruction of Indigenous culture here to what is
happening in Tibet, which most of us deplore and yet allow to
continue. Hurray for this series. Yes, it is pretty depressing, but
important for all that.

Could it really have been deliberate? The school I attended in
Melbourne from 1951-59 was founded in 1851, so no excuse for that
school (Scotch College) not knowing of, for example, the Victorian
history of Barak and the missionary Green. I am much more than sorry,
I am ashamed that I did not - as a journalist - sense the cover-up of
cultural genocide.

Absolutely eye opening. It is trite to argue that just because this is
the year of the apology, that the anger should just go away. Until the
story is taught in schools, descendants of Barak have every right to
feel despair and rage. As a Year 12 English teacher I shall again
teach the novel 'Home' by Behrendt in 2009 and now shall use this SBS

What a wonderful series! Never have I heard the true Australian story
spoken with such compassion and conviction. Finally we hear the
"other" side to the tale. I only hope that this series touches the
youth in order to ensure the future never sees such shameful action. I
am all for moving forward and leaving the past in the past - but
Australians now and in the future must know how we got here; we must
know the suffering that happened in order for us to enjoy this
beautiful country. My children are of Aboriginal blood and I thank you
for producing their heritage so honestly.

thank u george , I agree there are many mindless posts that defy all
logic , and kanga messages is not mainstream for mass consumption ,
butt I see my stats each week and you would get a real surprise at how
many do read / view my messages , like most there are 100 views per
reply approx and over the years it adds up, so I keep posting , and

I myself enjoy reading non mainstream POV ,an example from the mining
industry terminology , on open groups thats where I call the cutting
edgde , like a rock borer machine , at the cutting face its heavy
going and blunts the tools quicky , but its where all the real action
is , not for everybody, its rough and ready unpolished unsorted and
rocky , but its where you can find the real "gems" , open group
discussion at times turns up real " GEMS " amongst the barren waste
rock , if you look carefully , unpolished gems are hard to spot unless
you are searching hard you can miss them
as you probably know , its amazing what you can find and or learn
from those who have a different POV
