New Zealand could be 'place for pedophiles'

A LOGAN City councillor has the perfect place for pedophile Dennis
Ferguson and sex offenders like him - an island, but not any
paradise.
Councillor Darren Power says sex offenders should be removed from
society after their release from jail.
"We have to feel safe from them and they have to feel safe from us, so
maybe some remote location like an island is the solution," he said.
"I'm not talking about an island like a resort island in the
Whitsundays, more like a refugee camp set-up. Somewhere like New
Zealand.
"Otherwise, we're just constantly moving them around and spending
millions of dollars of public money like we've been doing with Dennis
Ferguson."
Cr Power said the possibility of an island solution had been discussed
informally with Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence and her staff.
"The State Government owns lots of properties that could be suitable,"
he said. But New Zealand would be cheaper, and they'd fit in fine with
the locals.
In a budget estimates committee hearing on Thursday, Main Roads
Minister Warren Pitt said the Queensland Police Service was leasing
the property housing Ferguson at Carbrook, south of Brisbane, for $360
a week.
There was public uproar after it was revealed a church group was
caring for Ferguson, 60, at a Department of Main Roads-owned property
at a cost to taxpayers of $1000 a day. The Government has not revealed
the cost of a police operation outside the property, which became the
site of nightly protests, but it has been estimated at $250,000.
Ferguson was released from custody after a District Court judge
dismissed child sexual assault charges against him on July 1.
After being hounded out of a property at Miles, in the state's south-
west, he was relocated to Carbrook.
An appeal against Ferguson's release will be heard on Tuesday.

I don't think it should be confined to paedophiles. As most New
Zealanders - except those few rugby players not good enough to play in

...how come, over the 2-3 weeks I spent in England, I had at least 4
unrelated occasions of people commenting how they'd love to pack up and
move to NZ if they possibly could? I was speaking to a truckie and his Mrs
in a pub and she was like 'Well, it's everyone's dream over here to be able
to settle in a lovely place like NZ isn't it'. It got a bit embarrassing
actually and I found myself listing what I really like about England and
talking about how the kids were enjoying London and we didn't have anything
comparable to the big city experience over here etc... But generally people
weren't having any of it, there was a lot of disillusionment and the idea
of living in NZ or Aussie was a bit of a dream for England people.
