If they cant control themselves then take away their courage and let them
drink water. Its sad when a minority can ruin it for the majority but sadly
they are. As for the idiots that were arrested then bigger fines and life
time bans from the MCG.

I think they should ban alcohol from all sporting events.
Some people just can't handle their grog and become a pain in the butt for
everyone else.
You're there to watch a game - not get pissed. Don't get me wrong - I like
a beer - but there are
some places where it shouldn't be allowed.

Except that the bosses think booze has nothing to do with it.

This from the Melbourne Age:

"The chief executive of the Melbourne Cricket Club, Stephen Gough,
said at least 10 people were arrested and more than 200 evicted in
what he said had become an annual event for a "mob mentality" to
prevail.

He said alcohol was not the cause of the problem."

The Age didn't ask him if he also believed in the tooth fairy... ;-)

That's funny, because I know of many grounds in many places around
Australia where rather a lot of beer is served and -they- don't have a
problem.

I think the common factor here is called "Victorians"

Those who sit in Bay 18 at the SCG, and whatever the relevant area is at
the MCG, do not go to watch a game at all. They could care less about
the game. They are there because it is the site of a party.

To these people, the event is unimportant. Like the New Year's Eve
fireworks show - if they were there to see the fireworks, they would
arrive at 8:30pm and leave at 9:16pm. The fact that they stay until
5:00am is testimony to the true motivation - drinking and yahoo-ing (do
you yahoo? sorry ...)

To truly stop the madness, take a cue from such entertainment types as
cinemas. If you stand up and carry on during a movie, you will be told
very smartly to sit down or else get out. I have no civil liberties
qualms about Security officials patrolling the concourses and issuing
Cautions-Warnings-Ejections on each and every person who obstructs the
spectating of those around. Even those 85-IQ heroes who stand up to
lead the "Aussie-Aussie-Aussie-Oi-Oi-Oi" chorus can take a long walk, as
far as I am concerned. I am there to watch cricket.

Just trying to recall a Recent History of Crowd Trouble at Australian
Grounds and I can come up with;

1. Last night at the MCG
2. An ODI Aus v India at the MCG during India's last tour (99/00).
3. SKW down at the fence (wearing a lid) appealing to his home crowd to
behave so that the game against England could resume. (Can't recall date but
iirc Alec was the Eng (c))

Anyone add to this? Say, last 20 years.

It was indeed a dark and stormy night when Moby

I think you'll find the correct term is Ockers, Shag.

When Ockers lose they behave like Ockers.

What I can't work out is that anyone can be surprised by any of this.

Drunken dickheads raised on the arrogance of the Ocker croocket team
would probably think that the kind of behavior demonstrated as the
Ockers got dicked in the One Dayer (by the Black Caps LOL) was
compulsory.

They probably see it as just the next step in the disgraceful sledging
tactics that have been this Ocker sides distinguishing feature.

I mean if your national team keeps on behaving like a pack of arsey
XXXXs then it's a safe bet to predict the fans will follow suit.

I have to say that when I saw the violence of the Ocker crowd I
thought I was watching croocket a third world country as the
ill-disciplined savage masses turned on the world as their beloved
team went down the dunny in glorious technicolor.

Did any of the players have their houses burned down yet of are the
fans saving that for when they lose another series?

Who is really surprised that the fans of the world's most
up-themselves-win-at-all costs sports (cough) professionals behave as
bad as the team?

As this Ocker crooket team starts the slide back to being crap it's a
shame that about the only thing that will be remembered about them is
not so much that they kept winning, but that they did it in ways that
did neither themselves, or the game of cricket, much good.

Just my thoughts....

There's many times where I remember the same thing happening at the SCG and

more likelihood of a greater number of idiots.

So we've got:

Brisbane:
Littering; rubbish thrown were players aren't.

You'll excuse me if I don't think it quite fits into the sort of behaviour
witnessed at the MCG.

I do agree that there are yobbos at all matches these days, but I -don't-
agree that the yobbos everywhere get up to anything nearly as disruptive,
or that there are nearly so many of them as the ones at the MCG.

No, headkase, you are wrong. If spectators were participants in the
sport they would be called players, not spectators. A "spectator" is a
*watcher*, not a participant.

Also, I've had a thought (and one of you guys can tell the newspapers):
This sort of thing does not happen at AFL matches at the MCG.
Conclusion: The problem is not the simplistic one of "Victorians". The
problem appears to be the attention span of those in the cheap seatsat
the cricket, which goes back to my point that they are not there to
watch cricket at all. They have no sense of the ebb and flow of a
cricket match - they recognise enough of this truth to avoid Test
matches, which are incomprehensible to them anyway. During any lapse in
the big-hitting or stumps-flying action, these people assume that
nothing at all is happening in the middle and hence they must create
their own "entertainment" (ie, get a laugh from seeing some family five
rows in front get soaked in beer).

So we have enough data now to conclude: ONE DAY CRICKET IS TO BLAME!!
The feeble moments of excitement generated in this game are
closely-edited and strung together in the promotional material to create
the illusion of a thrill-a-minute spectacle ... but the reality is that
overs 16 through 40 of a ODI are excrutiatingly dull in most ODIs, and
particularly when early wickets have fallen (excitedly) and
consolidation at no risk is the paramount strategy. This dull period
merely acts as a spur for the beer-soaked imbeciles to "get involved"
and "participate". Someone should try telling them that their
"participation" is *always* a hindrance to the sport, but some of those
words would have too many syllables for them to get the message. Whose
shout is it?

Cheers

Hi
there is mainly only low-alcohol beer available...
the problem is the yobboes turn up to the game already well-tanked up !!

As a cricketer of 35+ years, I can tell you loads of blokes go to the

Until that culture changes, banning grog will be one way to settle things,

'Victoria ponders bans for cricket yobbos

The Victorian government will investigate banning cricket yobbos from
matches, with suspensions ranging from one year to life.

But Police and Emergency Services Minister Andre Haermeyer ruled out
banning alcohol at matches, saying it would penalise well-behaved
spectators for the antics of a few "lobotomised dickheads".

His comments came as police increased their presence at the South
Africa versus Australia one-day cricket international at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground (MCG).

On Friday night, more than 250 mostly drunk spectators were evicted
from the Australia versus New Zealand match.

Play was suspended for 10 minutes during Australia's innings after
objects, including a bottle, were thrown at New Zealand's fielders.

Police said 23 people were arrested, mainly for alcohol-related
offences.

Mr Haermeyer said government officials would meet police, sporting
authorities and MCG management on Monday to discuss ways to address
the problem.

Bans such as those imposed on British soccer hooligans would be
considered, he said.

"If we decided this was workable, we would look at what sort of regime
we put in place, for example, maybe a year or so initially, up to a
life ban if they prove to be a serial idiot," the minister said.

Victoria Police Commander Leigh Gassner said the availability of
alcohol would also be discussed with MCG managers.

Patrons can buy a limited amount of light beer in plastic containers,
and Mr Haermeyer said he believed that should continue.

But he conceded bag searches were proving ineffective.

"There was certainly alcohol being brought in there in bottles because
bottles were being thrown around," Mr Haermeyer said.

"We also need to look at people who turn up at the ground already
drunk.

"There were suggestions a lot of these people were out in the pubs on
Friday afternoon and were well and truly blotto before they came to
the ground.

"But banning alcohol - I don't think that's appropriate.

"Alcohol consumed in a responsible quantity is not a bad thing. I
don't think you should penalise 70,000 other people at a sporting
fixture because you get a couple of hundred lobotomised dickheads who
cannot handle their alcohol."

Meanwhile, State and Regional Development Minister John Brumby also
condemned the loutish behaviour displayed on Friday.

"The government does take an extremely dim view of that behaviour. It
is unacceptable and I think the message just needs to be repeated," he
said.

"The behaviour of that small minority, puts at risk this great venue
and its benefits for hundreds of thousands of Victorians.

"It has to stop and obviously the full strength of the law will be
applied to ensure there is acceptable behaviour at the MCG."

American Football is tailor-made for television. Fans at the game can't
see a thing unless/until the QB drops back for a long pass. Inside runs
are just a mess of bodies and three seconds of noise followed by forty
seconds of dithering. I like American Football.

Golf is made for television - who wants to walk 5 miles to see the same
two or three players all day, when TV can show you all the contenders
and all the walking required is from couch to fridge and back?

Fishing is not a spectator sport any more than swimming or chess.

I don't think it's totally unimportant, but they do have other
priorities.

I remember going to SAs first official Rugby test in some years -
against the All Blacks at Ellis Park.

I went with my neighbour, Carl. After the final whistle I said to
Carl, "let's go and have a pint whilst everybody else is getting out
of here." We went to a bar at the top of one of the grandstands (it
has decor and ambience more suited to a cold war fallout shelter, but
they DO sell cold beer) and we found in there a bloke who could only
stand by dint of resting his chin on the bar and who had a long line
of airline-style brandy minitures arrayed in front of him.

He looked at us and slurred "sho what time ish the kickoff?". I told
him the game was over and he uttered an oath and asked me what the
score was. I lied and told him SA had won - at least he was happy for
a while.

There have always been these kind of supporters at cricket and rugby
here. Now we get a lot more of them. I don't go to ODIs here any more
because I find the fireworks, the loud music, the frantic and loud
annoucements that "that was a FOOOOUUUUURRRRR!" (no, really?) a bit
much. Plus at my age I don't care for the mexican wave very much (and
the automated scoreboards at the grounds start exhorting the crowd to
do the mexican wave every time the innings gets a bit quiet).

OK.. maybe that's what a lot of people do like and enjoy. I don't. I
don't go, and those who do like it pay their money and do go.

But there has to be some clarity on this.

Day/Night cricket here is marketed as one non-stop party. It's not
sold as being particularly much to do with the blokes out on the
field.

The Newlands ground has it's own ad campaign that portrays the ground
as a place where attractive, well-heeled young people go to meet,
drink and bump and grind.

Fine. But I hope the sponsors and the organisers don't object when a
brawl breaks out. After all, they're selling a piss-up.

Yep. An old tradition in SA is injecting brandy into naartjies
(tangerines). Everybody knows about it, nobody can do anything about
it. What are the Wanderers security staff supposed to do? Ban fruit?

Ah, so you already knew about it and attempted top cover it up. One
can only guess how many others unsavory incidents of appalling
terrorist behavior you are covering up.

As with when your blokes got nailed for being in the pay of bookies I
feel the truth will eventually come out.

>So that'd be.... what, 13 years ago?

As Ockers it has to be said that the Queenslanders have set the pace
and the standards for others to lower themselves to.

As the rest of Ockerville catches up it's heartening to see the likes
of the Queensland captain rugby league team scream in the face of a
match official calling him a fuc#en cheat.

God only knows how they covered up the riot that must have followed
that Queensland-style display of good sportsmanship.

Still as any good-sport Maroon neck will tell you, refs can't play,
refs can't play.
