I want anybodys opinion on three best three games theyve ever seen.
it doesnt have to be thru there own club, it can be any game

this is mine
1) 96 prelim - Port v Norwood
classic contest. Possibly the best final in the history of the SANFL.
On sheer nail biting stuff it was a classic.
I think the biggest margin all day was about three goals and that was
in the last quarter when norwood kicked three in the first 8 minutes
of the quarter. Hodges ended up kicking one of the most hardest goals
ever. About 35-40 metres out on the boundary on the members wing
kicking to the new scoreboard end, a breeze going across goals (away
in this case) this breeze being a 40km tornado as well kicked the
goal with 3 seconds left.
A classic game

2) Richmond v Essendon 96
That draw on Friday night, where Jurica kicked 4 or 5 in his first or
second game for the tiges. A mellee, Gale broke his collar Bone,
Maxfield kicked a great goal with a minute or 2 left on the run to put
the tiges a goal up, then O conner equalised in the dying seconds for
Essendon. Pressure Cooker stuff. A great game for any spectator
watching

3) Adelaide v North - 93 footy park
Crows won by one or two points, modra kicked ten, took mark of the
yaer, and a comeback victory to the crows (who i supported at the
time). My favourite memory of that game was waching Mark Mickan
juggle a one handed mark in teh forward pocket (he had seriously 15
grabs at it) and then proceeded to grubber the ball 3 metres in front
of him for the set shot at goal. Ive never heard a louder laugh at
the football before. Classic moment.
Overall great game

others would of been 99 GF port v Norwood, 94 gf Port v Eagles, 93
Crows v Fitzroy (crows by a point), 96 Essendon v Collingwood ANZAC
DAY draw

Going back a bit (a fair bit!) I'd put the 76 GF in there somewhere. Sturt
were rank underdogs and decimated by injuries coming up against a
supremely confident Port. I think Davies had the now-famous stats of
20-20-20 (kicks/marks/handballs or taps???) and played the game of his
life.

I was a kid, but it was a day I'll never forget.

Easy!

1) The Carlton v Collingwood 1970 Grand Final game i seen on
video

2) The Carlton v Richmond 1972 Grand Final game i also seen on
video (This game is AMAZING for the constant attacking play,
Richmond scored over 150 points but still lost by around 4 goals
and were hot favourites goign into it much like Essendon were
going into last years prelim final)

3) Probably the best i seen live for sheer drama is the Carlton
v Essendon prelim final last year

Seen many many many other great games including 1989 Grand Final
and 1984 2nd Semi Final but the brilliance of Jesaulenko and all
the other great Carlton stars of 1970 to come back from 44
points down at half time in a Grand Final stands out above all.

Out of left field i really do think some of the West Australia
v Victoria state game in early to mid 80's at Subiaco was some
of the best *standard* football games seen.

I can't argue with this choice. I watched the game at the Arafura Hotel
in Darwin with a group of Port and Norwood supporters. Like all Norwood
supporters, these idiots started screaming at us in the last 1/4 that
Port was gone for all money. Then Hodges kicked the best goal I have
ever seen, Port won, I won 1/2 carton off a pissed off Norwood supporter
while another Norwood supporter lost his bet and so had to drop his
dacks and do a lap of the hotel while singing the Port theme song.
Magic.

Also

Port v Essendon 1997
I was at the MCG to watch Port canter away with Cummings kicking 7 and
Wanganeen 4 goals. Ever the wit, at one stage I yelled out "Hey, this
Cummings bloke is good, where did we get him from?" while standing next
to the Essendon cheer squad and got the full array of surly looks in
return. As an added bonus, I got in for free on a friend's Essendon
membership card.

Port v West Adelaide, Alberton Oval 1990
This game is special because it was the first game Port played after it
was publicly announced that Port was attempting to join the AFL and a
large group of Victorian Journo's turned up with the intention of
slagging off Port. Port defeated West by over 100 points while
appearing to be in 2nd gear and KG Cunningham, who was commentating on
the match for the radio, spat the dummy at all the Port supporters
keeping him up to date with the score, told us all to piss off and left
before the end of the game, therby leaving his fellow commentator in the
lurch.

Port v Glenelg at Football Park circa 1978
This is the first game I remember attending. There were 30000 in
attendance and the scores were level at the 30 minute mark of the last
quarter when Peter Carey had the ball right in front of the Port goal
and Port's Andy Porplycia basically jumped into his back. 20000 Port
fans groaned. Then the umpire declared it holding the ball. 20000 Port
fans coughed, shuffled their feet and said things like "I didn't see
that, what happened." Porplycia kicked the goal, the siren went, Peter
Carey and Graham Cornes looked shattered and 20000 Port fans said to
each other "Well that free kick may have been a bit lucky but I'm sure
they all even up in the end." And then I got Tim Evans's autograph. Is
that a perfect day or what?

I also want to add the Port v Eagles 96 GF and just to show that it's
not all Port, the Sydney v Essendon 1996 Prelim final featuring Pluggers
point was amazing.

This game is the first one I can remember. I remember being driven to
my grandparents place on the other side of Adelaide and the streets were
completely empty. I didn't see a car on the road in the 30 minute drive
but you could hear distant yelling from inside the houses. For a 5 year
old it was almost spooky.
My grandfather was so shattered by the loss (remember Port hadn't won a
premiership since 65 and this was the longest wait between premierships
in Port history) that he had to take a couple of days off work.

twas the best game ever, first game i ever cried after the siren at.
I nearly threw up i was that nervous. I was shaking when hodges got
taht ball, and i burst into tears when he kicked that goal. From then
on, he was and always will be the biggest hero i have ever had the
pleasure of watching.

A great game that, that not many thought we would of won. Best bit
was looking after the game and seeing port second on the AFL ladder,
pity we didnt stay there long.

I JUST remember this game (i was around about 9 at the time) i
remember hodges kicking a dozen, and all this booing, didnt know what
for at that time.

Another game i forgot to add, A port v Norwood class in the early 90s,
port were 30 points down 26 minutes into the last, and we got up and
won. that was a great game too

Was in 95 by the way, and Maxfield also broke his jaw during the game when
he copped a footy in the face, yet in the AFL investigation afterwards into
David Grenvold, Richmond refused to admit the facts of the case. The
free-kick against Charles that gave the Bombers the ball on the wing with
30seconds left has to go down as one of the softest of all time.

I'd throw in the Cats-Essendon game from about 91-92 when Ablett kicked 14
and Salmon 11, that was a cracker as well. And any time Richmond beats
Carlton in the last round of the season to knock them out of the 8......

The ones I've been *at*.

1984 Second Semi. Great contest from first bell to the last. It was
the game that finally convinced the Dons they *could* beat Hawthorn.
Two weeks later they did in the first GF I ever went to.

1993 Rd 6, Essendon V Geelong. Ablett 14 goals, Salmon 10, 42 goals
between the two sides. I'll never forget some of Ablett's play that
day, he was magical.

1993 Preliminary Final. At the start of the game most people and the
media expected Essendon to walk it in (now where have I hear *that*
again?). Half time, 12.12 to 6.6. and we were thinking "Oh well, there
goes this year". An amazing second half, particularly from "Boris"
Bewick, including one of the best pressure goals I've ever seen, 50M
out on the boundary, split the middle dead centre, and the Dons got
home by 11 points.

Honorary mention: 1991 GF. Though in the end it was a blowout, it was
a close game all day, with the poor old maid finally getting to show
she could put on match with *atmosphere*.

Dave

which shows that kicking skills used to be non-existent, despite the
calibre of both teams involved.

before i go into the *long* bit below, a couple other classic games i've
seen include:

* the 1993 ess-geelong shootout (ablett 14 goals, salmon 10 and alessio,
who replaced the injured the salmon for the last 15 minutes, 2 goals). the
1996 "centenary" match was a great night too - bewick coming back from a
year off to kick 8 goals, including five in the last quarter! (and micahel
long doing the opposite...)

* round 8, 1991, ess-wce at the windsock-tied-down windy hill. essendon
fell just short despite being down to 16 fit players (bewick knocked
unconscious, salmon torn-to-buggery groin, long with broken ribs/punctured
lung, shane heard a medial ligament). high/lowlights included:
# madden's incredible baulk after a mark around dean irving to kick his
third goal in the third quarter - he'd run past irving before he landed!
# somerville's towering mark - his shin was on irving's shoulder and his
arms stretched all the way up. bruces says "well, they'll talk about
that one for a hundred years. one of the great marks in the history of
the game". bet no else remembers it :(
# the great efforts by long and heard - continually swapping from bench
to point post, and by salmon, who played out the game at
full-forward and continued, somehow, to be competitive.
# adrian burns taking a full-blooded kick by irving in the guts in the
last quarter, but getting up as they were *way* past having no
interchange.
# almost stealing the game after being behind by 4 goals with 8 minutes
left! cransberg's shepherd-rove to kick essendon's final goal is a
real neck-breaker - it's being kicked out of the danger zone and then
suddenly, wham, cransberg is running the other way with the ball!
they didn't get that ball back from the crowd :)
# the official crowd of 21,682 for a lock-out!

* the REAL anzac day classic - 1992, when essendon came back against
melbourne from 47 points down 5 minutes into the final quarter. ordinary
game otherwise but what a quarter!

* ess versus north last year - say no more!

> and the third was a Ess V carlton game, where kernahan only had to kick a
> point to win and missed (anyone remember which game that was? not too
> long ago)

uses this as an excuse to watch the final epsiode on tape - a transcript
follows!

it was round 2, 1993, at the MCG.

carlton lead by 9, 4 and 1 points at the breaks.

bewick and harvey were injured by 3/4 time, but cransberg cut his head in
the first minute of the quarter and came off. with interchange benches of 2
(remember them?), harvey is forced on despite his groin injury.

early on, tommy alvin goals from a kick in the pocket. then kernahan does
the same from a lead down the spine. alvin snaps out of a pack but hits the
post. alvin then has another shot from 30 m out, but only gets a behind.
alvin - again! - to kernahan to brown leads to another behind, and the lead
is 16 points. kernahan marks strongly and has a shot from 51m but falls
just short.

at last essendon makes a thrust forward, and cransberg - back on - goals.

(on comes the "the name of the game, the name of the game, the name of the
game - is australian" at the ad break)

shortly afterwards, cransberg roves elegantly off a missed mark, chips to
hird who takes a twisting mark and goals to make the margin only 4 points.

from the bounce, bradley kicks forward and kernahan takes a tumbling mark -
but no, it hit the ground first. ball up!

justin madden takes a good mark. i just thought i'd report that :)

he passes to spalding who then hits brown loose in the forward line. goal!

harvey trots back onto the ground, to the forward pocket. much comment is
made about defenders running off slowcoaches.

at this stage the final quarter is almost exactly half done, and carlton
17.16.118 lead essendon 16.12.108. williams is getting possessions
everywhere, and the centre line is dominated by carlton.

the ball heads back to the carlton forward line, and wallis takes a "ground
mark" like kernahan's. he is immediately grabbed by dorotich, and the ump
goes for the bounce, amidst boos from the crowd. dorotich gets frustrated
and gives away the free as the pack forms after the bounce.

he makes up a few minutes later, handballing to heaver who kicks his second
goal from 30m out. the lead is 16 points with 9:20 left on the clock.

carlton surge out of the centre from the next bounce, gleeson tapping to
williams who delays his kick, then hits the leading dorotich perfectly.
"arrogance personified" says don scott. but dorotich merely kicks his third
point for the day (two goals as well).

silvagni runs down the ground to pump the ball into the 50m. dorotich flies
high, getting a hand to the ball and a knee to the back of wallis's head,
but can't take the mark.

7 minutes are left. the margin is 17 points.

finally, essendon goes forward and again they convert immediately, hird
roving to kick an easy one from 30m directly in front.

essendon finally win a centre contest, and go forward, the loping harvey
getting a snap kick towards, but not to, the goalface.

says the commentators "bewick is appealing to the umpire for a free kick".
some things don't change!

ignorant of the heroics yet to come, the commentators go on about harvey's
strength of character. don scott proclaims a lot of players nowadays have a
low pain tolerance.

harvey collects the ball from the throw-in, and passes beautifully to
kieran sporn as he runs back towards goal. "whooo-oh, funny game, footy,
isn't it?"

sporn goals and with 5 minutes left, the margin is back to 5 points.

a poor bounce at the centre, and essendon strikes forward. the ball is
kicked to a pack 30 m in front of goal, but not marked. harvey hits the
pack at full speed from the front, splits it, and the ball goes to the
waiting cransberg. he gets his fourth goal, and essendon lead by a point!

the crowd of 49,856 goes utter ape-shit.

alessio does his basketball imitation at the centre bounce, grabs the ball
and boots it into the fifty. cransberg can't hold it, but abruptly harvey,
running on pure adrenaline, takes it. he turns outside 50 by the boundary
line in front of the members stand, and not caring about his groin, kicks
for goal. it bounces in the square, turns right and out-runs hanna and hird
through for a goal.

the crowd goes even more ape-shit.

4 minutes left!

carlton win the bounce. it ends up with alvin, then brown, and dorotich
gets the mark in the forward pocket. wallis whacks him "accidentally".
dorotich responds with a hand to the face (wallis overacts), but the ump
just tells them to behave themselves. dorotich kicks another point.

the ball heads back into competition, and kickett is somehow conned and
handpasses to williams over his own head. the ball rushes forward and
kernahan - who, after a blinder of a start to the quarter, has disappeared
- marks in front of anthony daniher. kernahan "rarely misses these" and he
converts for his fifth goal.

2.5 minutes left, ess 20.12.132 tied with carl 19.18.132

carlton goes forward from the bounce, but bomber thompson intervenes before
- incredibly - kicking out on the full. brown to bradley to silvagni, who
kicks into the 50 - but it goes just a bit too far for alvin.

the ball is pushed around desparately for another minute or so, with great
efforts by both sides (harvey runs down mckay), before sexton passes to the
the blues forward line and kernahan rises over dorotich and wallis for his
twelfth mark! williams grabs him and tells him to take the kick.

"he is an absolute champion," blab the commentators. "don't let anyone tell
you different."

kernahan backs off 15 m to outside the 50m line, towards bay 13. the crowd
hushes. he starts to come in, the siren sounds, and he stops and goes back.

"and he - misses. it's out of bounds! oh no!"

There are many many fantastic games, but the three which initially come to
mind are, in chronological order, as follows:

1970 Grand Final Carlton d Collingwood from 44 points down at half-time
1984 Grand Final Essendon d Hawthorn from 24 points down at three-quarter
time
1993 Preliminary Final Essendon d Adelaide from 42 points down at half-time

Another "set of matches" which come to mind are all the 1 point losses by
Essendon in finals matches:

Fitzroy in 1986
Brisbane in 1996
Sydney in 1996
Carlton in 1999

Anyway, they're the ones which come to mind without having to think about
it.

The best games I've seen were all Grand Finals, all close, all
desperate. That's when there is the most on the line.

The 1964 Grand Final when Melbourne's Neil Crompton came from the
backline to kick a goal moments before the siren to steal victory from
Collingwood. It was also Ron Barassi's last game for Melbourne (and
unfortunately Melbourne's last premiership).

The 1966 Grand Final when, with scores level, St. Kilda kicked a point
in the dying seconds to win their first (and only) premiership.

The 1989 Grand Final between Hawthorn and Geelong ... for the greatest
(near) comeback, individual performances and most physical game.

Maybe also the tied Grand Final in 1977 (sorry, that makes four).

Yep, great game. We'd copped heaps all day from the Melbourne crowd,
and boy was it fun to watch!

Yeah.....in the leadup (to Kernahan's mark), Derek Kickett executed a
perfect handball to Greg Williams, when Kickett could have pumped the ball
into our forward line from his position on the wing. It was a blind
handpass...beautifully called by Williams.

When Kerna kicked the ball, i didn't know he missed it at first. All i saw
was 'Bomber' Thompson clapping perfusely. I knew he had missed it then.

There has already been a heap of replies to this. Sorry, folks, but you
are all wrong.

The greatest game ever played is the one marketed with that tag by
Australian Football Video: the 1989 round 6 match at Prince's Park
between Hawthorn and Geelong, an awesome display of the skills of the
game. It is doubtful whether two such great sides had ever graced a
single season as the Hawks and the Cats did in 1989. The return match in
September was a bit of a purler too, as I recall.

It's always easier to remember finals than home and away games. Two I
recall with particular fondness are the 1984 Second Semi (Essendon and
Hawthorn) and the 1991 Second Elimination (Geelong and St Kilda).

As the keen watchers of this NG would remember, last off-season I posted
my opinion on what the top 20 matches were - of the 90s at least.

So, in this instance I will nominate my *favourite* games of all time, as
opposed to the *best*.

1. No contest. 1986 Elimination Final. As a Royboy I haven't had too much
to hang my hat on over the years, but this is one match I will remember as
long as I live. To be honest, it was a woeful game of football played in
mostly antarctic conditions out at Waverley. The Roys started well, but
just before 3/4 time had fallen a kick and a half behind the hot-favourite
Bombers, who would be coming home with a strong wind in the last quarter.
Quick goals either side of the break to Bernie Harris put the Lions back
in front. Hawker put the Dons back in front about 10 mins into the last
when Gary Pert was robbed of a mark that had been touched off the boot.
Essendon then peppered away for the next 15 minutes but could only add
another 4 behinds, taking their advantage out to 5 points. We are now 26
1/2 mins in, so I'll hand over to Lou, Peter and Bob...

Lou: "Keane's kick is out wide, the ball driven back out toward the wing
position; Conlan overruns it, Mick Thomson's grabbed, but doesn't matter -
Heard gets a hurried kick, it doesn't travel very far, but this'll suit
Essendon, er, Richardson's run into a brick wall. He's lost that, it's
holding the ball and the Fitzroy side have still got a chance as the ball
comes down there now; Harris dodges, he's clear, he goes for the long kick
- if they get a goal here! Conlan's got it! He could kick a goal to put
'em in front - he has!"
Peter: "Hoh!"
Lou: "They're in front!"
Peter: "By a point!"
Lou: "By a point - and they might have won the game here!"
Peter: "What a sensation!"
Lou: "Arrr, he's hardly had a touch all day this fellow and he's got the
goal that could've won the match. He's had 5 kicks only, he got the ball
to kick the goal. Watch it again. Good play on the part of Harris."
Bob: "Leon Harris puts it out; a lovely pass to Conlan...and you cannot
afford to relax at any stage. There won't be much time-on at all..."

...and there wasn't.

Roys 8.10 d Dons 8.9

It is important to note that, at this stage, every game Fitzroy played was
more than likely going to be their last. The memory of seeing the Fitzroy
supporters dancing and hugging and crying after the final siren still
brings a lump to my throat.

No. 2 on my list of faves would be the round 11, 1992 Fitzroy v
Collingwood match at Princes Park. That was the match when Gary Pert,
playing against the Roys for the first time, put the Maggies in front with
only a minute to play, after they had trailled by 27 points at 3/4 time.
Of course, it was Perty's best mate, Paul Roos, who snapped truly with
only 10 seconds left to regain the lead for the mighty Lions.

Roys 13.14 d Pies 13.11

For my third favourite I will nominate the round 1, 1993 encounter between
Carlton and Fitzroy at Princes Park. The Roys played well early on, but
the Blues dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters to hold a 4 goal advantage at
3/4 time. The Lions had fought back to level the scores with a minute to
go, when somehow Carlton first gamer Andrew McKay left his opponent and
fellow debutant, Fitzroy's Michael Dunstan on his own 30m out, dead in
front. Dunstan goals. Lions stick it up their cruel landlords - on this
occasion, anyway!

Roys 17.16 d Bluebaggers 17.10

1 - Geelong Vs Carlton - Optus Oval - 1995 (One of the greatest contests
that I've ever seen in any sport. One team was up, then the other, back
and forth footy all game, Carlton got out to what we all thought was a
match winning break and Geelong fought back hard in the final few moments
for Carlton to finish up winning by under a goal)

2 - Carlton Vs West Coast - Optus Oval - 1996 (Kouta took over in the last
quarter, the crowd chanted the Kouta's name.)

3 - Carlton Vs Essendon - MCG - Preliminary Final - 1999 (The match which
finally proves that the good guys can get up over evil).

For me it's the Anzac Day Draw in 95(?). Having just moved to Melbourne for
Uni, my Grandfather and I went along and got pretty good seats. 6 or 8 rows
back near the flank/pocket at the Southern Stand End.

I am an Essendon supoprter and my Grandfather, Collingwood. Throughout the
course of the day he would elbow me in the ribs whenever I bagged a Rocca or
a Buckley or any other Collingwood player. Of course I'd reciprocate with a
knuckle to the shoulder whenever my Bombers got bagged.

I left that game with bruised ribs, and my Grandfather could barely lift his
right arm for a week such was the intensity in the game and hence our
barracking.

That was the last game I ever went to with my Grandfather. It's possibly
this fact since his recent passing, that I cherish so much a game which had
no winner and yet no loser.

Brad

I know what you mean about "spooky". The looks on my mates' faces was
unbelievable... they looked and acted like zombies.

I think Cahill (& the Williams family) still have nightmares about that game...

Mike La Pietra reminisced:

Never mind, the 77, 79-80-81, 88-89-90, 92, 94-95-96, 98(especially)
and 99 premierships *almost* make up for 1976, while Sturt fans had to
endure a 'Worse than Woodville' run of wooden spoons, merger threats
and one season where they didn't even win a game. No wonder you cling
to ancient glories.

someone (can't remember who) mentioned the Essendon-West Coast game
where Essendon were down to 16 on the field. i remember that one too,
great game. by the end West Coast were down to 17 as well - lots of
empty space around the ground to kick into!

69, 70, 74, 76 (WHAT A GAME!!!), 80 (Great game, lost with Foster later
admitting he made a mistake that cost the Blues the flag), and yes 98 is

Totally! I think it was either 85 or 86. The lead changed something like 8
or 9 times in the final quarter with WA running by 3 points. THe lasting
memory I have of that game was the last shot on goal for Victoria. Tom
Alvin ended up with the ball after it was jarred loose in a tackle, 20
metres out on about a 30 degree angle with nothing between him and goal but
daylight. Wayne Blackwell came from out of nowhere to completely smother
the ball right off the boot. I remember Eric Sarich (who was commentating)
saying "Who smothered that 'cause he deserves a medal?" It was the most
incredible piece of desperation play I've ever seen.

Carlton Vs. Essendon Prelim Final 1999, I was at that game and the Drama was that great that my
