MELBOURNE, June 22 AAP - Tough Western Bulldogs' defender Daniel Southern
announced today he had retired from the AFL, effective immediately.

Southern, 25, told a packed media conference he was ending his playing
career because of constant knee and soft tissue injuries over the last 10
years.

Southern played his 100th game early this season, but made a much bigger
impact on the game than that small tally would suggest.

His shaven head, ponytail and frequent trips to the tribunal, coupled with
his engaging personality, made him one of the game's characters.

was a great personality the game had. Probably remembered most for
his strangling of Peter Sumich in the West Coast brawl in 94
