he's got nothing more to achieve at geelong. may as well make hay while
the sun shines.
And this is only the start, when the best uncontracted players from every
club are poached by the GC a lot of people aren't going to be happy.
There's a good chance that Richmond will lose Deledio or Cotchin (or both)
as all lower clubs with no chance whatsoever of a Premiership in the
medium-term are targeted by the temptations of that environment - cash,
profile, lifestyle, possible future success. Tough for a young player to
knock that sort of thing back......

how big is the GC salary cap?
$1M more than everyone else.
Only ONE ????
Shhh. If too many wise up the AFL may have to move earlier than
anticipated.

Didnt they spend that on the Rugby league guy?

No, the AFL itself is paying the big bucks on that one...
I say, take the money and run, Gary. Then I cop less stories about you
being a saint, Geelong are weakened, and GC's ability to buy someone
from my team is lessened!

Barley, all the GC have now is a team of 17 yo's on minimum draft level
wages, they will literally have mega-bucks to throw at out of contract
players that the existing clubs have no hope matching.
The GC will "pick the eyes" of clubs taking their promising players and
the only defence is to try and overpay their likely targets to retain them
- something that can cause far more problems than the one it may solve.
The phrase "hiding to nothing" should become more familiar as this saga
plays out.....

Funny as it seems, I don't think the extra $1mil is going to help in the long run. What it should do is secure OOC players for 3 years: there is no point drafting the OOC's if they could only offer 1 year, or maybe 1+1 year.
As for lifestyle? Yeah, every kid wants to live on the GC, or Brisvegas right?

There is one thing that amuses me about Guy McKenna in all this. He's taken the line that just because the WCE filled their ranks with the successful 17 yo kids in the nat comp when he was 16, and that with this group WCE won a flag, it follows that GC will be successful prems in four years taking a similar approach.
He seems to forget that WCEs, as a private franchise, collapsed with the final offer to note holders by the WAFC of $0.02 per note. The franchise was technically bankrupt in 1989 and the AFL bailed them out with both money and priority draft picks for 1990. Hey, that did the trick! If you can't win a game because you have too many kids with a few old blokes that "came home", then plead poor to the (then VFL), pissing off every other club bar Brisbane, plus the local competition, in an endevour to win a flag, then "hiding to nothing" should be replaced with "history repeating".
