Good, now maybe they can provide subsidies so fans actually turn up to
their games?

Knowledge is a measure of how many answers you have, intelligence is a
measure of how many questions you have.
This from a sport that considers 15,000 a "crowd"
CDK
I have been to a few games around Sydney where there were about 1000 to 3000
and they considered "that" to be a large crowd
but, the majority of those crowds were from the local drunk society
except of coarse for the ones in wheelchairs from the retirement village on
their weekly outing
Mate, don't worry, one day the whole world will know about Collingswoods and

Tell that to the advertisers who finance the networks who finance the
codes who finance the clubs who finance the players.
And the advertisers get their money from people who watch/subscribe to
these games, so that means that *you* finance it all.
Only if you buy the products David, and don't mute the
ads.
Wheras "rugger" is played in two states of Australia,
New Zealand, public schools in the UK and very badly
in a handful of other countries.
World domination is a fair way off yet Viper.

Whether we buy the products/government messages etc we all basically pay
for it one way or the other - otherwise those who fork out the cash for
the ads (and eyeballs to watch them) wouldn't bother.
Creative attempt Neil, but don't think the IOC agree, unless
of course those old buggers were duped !! :)
134 federations indeed.....
Viper
Ah yes, the IOC, the erstwhile body that decided that
baseball is worthy as an Olympic Sport, such is it's
almost universal reach.
Remind me again where baseball is played by more than
a handful of the population.
In my little village, there are about 35 Australian Rules Clubs
that is not including the seconds, juniors etc
about 45 netball clubs
somewhere around 25 basketball clubs
3 Rugby clubs and
1 baseball club
which says it all
Well Neil, it ain't my cup of tea, but the last WC was contested by 22
countries. Not sure how mant Feds exist, but feel it may be in excess
of 100. And you, of all people, well know the popularity of Rugby
worldwide, shame on you............

Meaningless twaddle Viper.
16 countries contested the 2007 cricket World Cup, and
in sheer weight of participant and spectator numbers
cricket would dwarf Baseball, League and Union
combined, but no one seriously argues that cricket is
a "world" sport.
Cricket is basically played in England, South Africa,
Australia, New Zealand and on the sub-continent,
Europe, Asia and The Americas don't know the game
exists.
Much the same can be said for Rugby except that Rugby
isn't played on the Sub-Continent, so you can deduct
one billion plus people from it's reach when compared
to cricket.
Australian Rules Football isn't played in as many
countries but it is at least the dominant football
code in it's country of origin which is more than can
be said for Rugger.
It's an abysmal game, boring as batshit.
USA, Cuba, Japan, Mars(?).......
Well Neil, you introduced baseball to support your
position and I just countered, using real numbers.
If I've taken the time to check the reality of your
statement and indeed proven it to be very uninformed,
you might just have the good grace not to use terms like
'meaningless twaddle'. I fear however, like most VFL
fans, your blinkered enthusiasm continues to defeat
logic.

It's a flawed argument, because again, you don't rely on
real or relevant numbers, you just grab a notion and run
with it. In the case of organised cricket, participation in India
is reckoned to be anywhere between 18 and 30% of the
population. That's not less than say 200mill people.
Even if you defer to the spectator numbers, you would be relying
on Indian attendances to get you over the line and save for 20/20
and One Dayers, you'd be drawing a long bow. Baseball in the
USA, Cuba, Japan and Korea alone, I'm sure would draw bigger
numbers than cricket world wide.
> Cricket is basically played in England, South Africa, Australia, New

It's not a world game Neil, it's not going to help your
argument.

Again, there are 134 federations, all of whom contest the
RWC and it's qualifying tournaments. It's been re-admitted
to the Olympics in 7's format, with both Mens and Womens
competitions. There are a host of reasons for it's re-admission
Neil, foremost among them is the fact that it is a World Game.
I know that's hard to swallow, but it's a fact mate, it's not
argueable
RWC is the third biggest sporting event in the World, in terms
of gross revenues. Hard to swallow ?I know it will be, but it's
not argueable old son.....
> Australian Rules Football isn't played in as many countries
It's played in one country Neil, count 'em.

It's origins are in Ireland, not Australia. Go to Ireland
sometime, they'll have a laugh with you about it
It's dominant in a corridor of the extreme south east and in two
states that don't matter. South Melbourne play out of Sydney
and Fitzroy play out of Brisbane. It is largely supported by
immigrants from Victoria. I can't believe how you people
believe your own hype.
The rest of the World is falling over itself to host a FIFA WC
and the good old Vics man the ramparts 'Nah, you ain't gunna
spoil our season'. Yokels mate, yokels
which is more than can
> be said for Rugger.

Brilliant, just brilliant, 'yours is shit, ours is better'
That was the highlight of your argument
Hope you get a litte red footy from Santa
Viper
Read carefully, I didn't mention attendances at
matches, I mentioned spectators, and the viewing
audience for cricket will rise exponentially in the
coming years as India's middle class expands.

It's easily argueable, and it isn't fact just because
you say it is.
It's no more a world game than cricket is.

Wrong again.
Australian Rules was first played as early as 1840 and
while it borrows from English games it was also
heavily influenced by a local aboriginal game, the
term "mark" is thought to derive from the aboriginal
word "mumarki" meaning to catch.
Gaelic Football is a more recent game.

Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane Bears to form the
Brisbane Lions to play in the 1997 AFL season, the
Brisbane Bears had been in the competition for 10
years prior.
The average attendance at BL home games in 2009 was
just over 29,000, the average attendance at Lang Park
for RL games in 2009 was just under 32,000.
Lang Park draws the biggest attendances of all the RL
venues and yet can only draw crowds 10% higher than
the Brisbane Lions can draw at The Gabba, some of the
attendance figures for other RL venues are downright
embarassing.
The average attendance at Subiaco for AFL games in
2009, in one of the states that don't matter, was just
under 35,000, I won't bother with figures from
Melbourne, they're light years ahead of anything Rugby
can offer.
Either there are lots of immigrants in QLD or the
locals don't give too much of a toss about Rugby, my
money's on the latter.

It's just my opinion, I don't much care for Soccer or
Basketball either.
Take it easy.
Ah well, will still be hoping that Richmond have a good year, I do
fondly remember the days of Hart, Bartlett and Sheedy and find
the latter in particular a most engaging and likeable bloke. I am
sure he'll do a good job with the new venture.
Anyway dude, have a great Xmas, won't be there on Boxing Day
this year, as we have elected to go to the Tennis instead. Just hope
it's not so hot.......now if that bloody SCG was just half as good as
the MCG ! But that's another story......
Cheers

Its the same place that pays the big dollars for the TV rights I
should imagine.
Its also the place where synchronised swimmings rates well in the
olympics
Greg
As it happens I lived over the road from the SCG for a
while in the late 70's, pre Sydney Swans.
I went to the Union Grand Final the year I was there,
I preferred Union to League as it was more continuous
although not as freewheeling as Aussie Rules.
Those Ella boys sure could play.
And all the best to you and yours Viper.
You just lost the argument.
The lack of non-Victorian clubs featuring in the AFL finals series also
had a negative effect on the overall AFL ratings for the year, so the
upshot was that in 2009 the NRL outrated the AFL in total viewers because
of luck.
The result just gives the AFL more incentive to grab more viewers from
western Sydney, because just a few thousand more regular viewers in that
region will tip the number further and further in the AFL's way as well as
erode the NRL's totals.
Did I ? What, do SA and WA have plans to be known for something
other than unusual fauna and dead explorers ?
Do something daring, buy yourself a mystery flight
Viper
Careful Viper.
WA has been driving the national economy for the past
decade or so, NSW is a basket case governed by a
corrupt and unelectable rabble, a laughing stock.
Queensland is, well, Queensland.
Are we a laughing stock ? Things must have improved then :)
Is Jeff Kennett available ? I'd love to have Big Jeffery here
for a couple of years as long as he left two things at home
1) That appalling Hawthorn jacket and 2) His Mrs

You're welcome to Jeff but be warned, he'll privatise

I always thought Flick was kinda foxy, even if she

U R correct Neil

At this point, it is impossible to take you seriously anymore.
