Greetings all,
I was recently re-tensioning an ex Tait train destination roll (don't we
all?) and noticed the words "Tait and 1st series Harris roll" pencilled on
the rear of the bottom of the roll.
This of course leads me to ask why this was written on the roll? What, if
anything, made it different than a 2nd series Harris or a later type of
spark? Were there different widths or something? The roll is one from the
final years of Tait trains - has CITY LOOP, WERRIBEE etc. I assume other
trains from this era would have similar destinations anyway, so I wouldn't
expect this to be the reason for marking it in this way.
While I'm at it. Does anyone know if it is possible to fix these things so
that they don't keep scrolling off on strange angles? It seems impossible. I
know they often did this in service, so I'm prepared to live with the fact
that it is authentic.

Unfortunately mine's in pieces at the moment. :-( I think mines off a Harris
train because I got it from reclamations when they were converting the Harris
cars to loco hauled country sets. It must have been in the late eighties. Mine
also has the usual "Coldstream", "Deer Park", etc... destinations.

>Ta muchly

Well, obviously it isn't too difficult for me to at least list the Tait roll
that I have. I would be interested in lists of others too. How many must
there have been over the years?

Mine is :-
SPECIAL; WERRIBEE; MOORABBIN; CHELTENHAM; BERWICK; MORDIALLOC; ASPENDALE;
CARRUM; FRANKSTON; OAKLEIGH; DANDENONG; FLINDERS STREET; SPENCER STREET;
NEWPORT; NEWPORT WORKSHOPS; GOWRIE; WILLIAMSTOWN; WILLIAMSTOWN PIER; ALTONA;
SUNSHINE; ST ALBANS; PAKENHAM; ESSENDON; BROADMEADOWS; BRIGHTON BEACH;
SANDRINGHAM; CITY CIRCLE; CITY LOOP; GLEN WAVERLEY; KEON PARK; ALAMEIN;
CAMBERWELL; BOX HILL; UPFIELD; GREENSBOROUGH; RINGWOOD; UPPER F.T.GULLY;
CROYDON; LILYDALE; BELGRAVE; COBURG; MOOROOLBARK; ST KILDA; PORT MELBOURNE;
PRINCES BRIDGE; RESERVOIR; LALOR; EPPING; HEIDELBURG; MACLEOD; ELTHAM;
HURSTBRIDGE; RACE SPECIAL; SHOW SPECIAL.

For the price watchers, it came from a shop in Dimboola and cost me $75
(plus travelling expenses - from Gippsland). I am told it was originally
priced at about $375. Seems way too much to me. It is complete with 115volt
lamps wired in series (I may have to re-wire it).

I also have most of a Harris roll. The top portion is missing, but it
otherwise seems to be in unused condition.
Remaining destinations are :-
...... ST ALBANS; KENSINGTON; ESSENDON; BROADMEADOWS; BRIGHTON BEACH;
SANDRINGHAM; EASTMALVERN; EPPING; GOWRIE; GLEN WAVERLY; ALAMEIN; CAMBERWELL;
BOX HILL; MITCHAM; RINGWOOD; FERNTREE GULLY; BELGRAVE; CROYDON; LILYDALE;
WARBURTON; HEALESVILLE; WARB-TON. H-VILLE; COBURG; FLINDERS STREET; FAWKNER;
UPFIELD; ST KILDA; PORT MELBOURNE; PRINCES BRIDGE; RESERVOIR; LALOR;
HEIDELBURG; MACLEOD; ELTHAM; HURSTBRIDGE; RACE SPECIAL; SHOW SPECIAL.

If my Tait roll was also for 1st series Harris trains, then presumably this
roll was for a later Harris. I'm sure someone here will tell me if I am
wrong.

This roll also cost me $75 (I got it first), so either I paid too much for
it, or the Tait one was comparitively cheap. Reclamation may have been a
better deal, but I never got around to visiting that place.

Both rolls are part of the display slowly being put together in Hobbies
Plus, Princes Hwy, Stratford, Vic. (hey, I have to mention it).

Unfortunately I do not have a roll, but can remember rambling through
the cab of a stabled tait at Oakleigh whilst I was at school (say,
1965 or so) and seeing CARNEGIE and KEW on the roll.

Just after the D cars returned to service in about 1966, I saw the roll on 207D go
around at Flinders St one day. It had no Glen Waverley on it so we went to Glen
Waverley with EastMalvern displayed. It also had the old Flinders St (not Street),
Royal Paark, North Fitzroy, Kew, Preston, (which I have never seen on another roll
since) Winsdor, Prahran, SpringVale Cemetery, and Alphington. About the same time
Carnegie appeared on the rolls, Holmesglen appeared. There has never been a
crossover or a timetabled service terminating at Holmesglen. Does anyone know why it
was put there, and why it appeared 20 years later on the Comeng rolls?

I think this is one of those How long is a piece of string jobs,and we may
never get the definitive answer.
According to "The electric railways of Victoria"compiled by S Dornan and R
Henderson 1979c
Appendix111,they show the destination rolls for Tait(approx1940s),Harris
(2nd series),and Stainless steel (Hitatchi) and guess what, No Carnegie,yet
like you John I m sure I have seen Carnegie.
I can well remember that they where modified over the years with whole
sections taken out and sewn back to gether again,so perhaps bits got left
out and others where bastardised in other ways.
May be the swing door cars had another version as well,I don't know.
Any way if any body is stuck with out the above mentioned appendix drop me
an e-mail gr...@dcsi.net.au
Cheers

Oops! I forgot about that book. The problem of having ones library in a room
over 100kms away.
It is interesting to see that the Harris roll list is different to the
Harris roll that I have (even allowing for the fact it isn't complete).
Several destinations are in a different order. Was there any logic in the
order that the destinations were printed?

Seemed to be,pre city Loop,when Sandy went to Broady,Dandy to Willy, and St
Kilda and Port Melb shuttles where the norm,like wise the Princess Bridge
trains stayed on there patch,so the driver and guard did not have to crank
it around the whole roll for the likely return destination.Adding the rider
that yes of course there where exceptions.
We got spoiled when auto select a number rollers came in and cranking became
a lost art form <g!>

Until the duplication at Rosanna in 1958, some trains used to terminate
at Rosanna. The driver would walk to the end of the platform to turn
off the wig-wag at Lower Plenty Road.

The trains definitely had ROSANNA on the destination, and as they were
usually swing door, then there must have been a different version of the
destination roll.

I remember when I first went to the sparks in 1975, I transfered to
Sandringham to get a rostered position (as it took years to get off Flex in
those days), the younger drivers at Sandy (yes I was young once) had a bit
of a competition going, we all knew where we would cross each other during
certain shifts so we would put up unusual destinations to try to out do each
other. Depending on whether you had a Tait/Harris or Hitachi you could come
up with some rare terminating destinations:

CARNEGIE, Moorabin, East Malvern, Elsternwick, Croydon, Rosanna, South
Morang City Circle, City Loop (not in use then) Mentone, Seaford, Coburg,
etc.

The Swing Doors had Healesville and Healesville/Warburton on the blinds, one
Swing Door set used on the Sandy line had perminent (painted) headboards, on
the East End Motor it had "Brighton Beach" whilst the West End Motor had
"Flinders Street", this set (if I remember right) only did one trip a day,
running in to town in the morning being stabled in the Western Car Sidings
("A" Box) then returning to Brighton Beach that evening.

Do you remember that the local Brighton Beach gentry grew tired with there
"Own train", we want a new one, and told the Commissioners to get rid of
it,which they eventually agreed to. However the sting in the tail was that
come Monday morning that service and the return evening service had been
permanently cancelled and still no new trains on the line till just before
the election the state ALP came to power.
