I was at Hornsby train station today on a train and 2x NSW Police entered the carriage and checked tickets.

They checked comcessions, etc.

Why do Transit Officers exist anymore when NSW Transit Police do thesame job?

What benefit do TO's have?

Cheaper, and require less training.

Been that way for over two decades.

Transit Officers are not really cheaper, salary wise, than police. A
probationarey constable gets just under $60k. Plenty of TO's make more than
that.

Police require lots of training, to be sure, but they are not paid for
initial training.

What this adds up to is that Transit Officers days are seriously numbered.

I believe the intent is to roll the Transits into the NSW Police, much like
what occurred in 1988 with the TIB Transit Officers. But not sure what the
delay is.

I'm told that (some of) those who are transferring over are in Goulburn
Police Academy right now. BUT they won't be utilised in the Transit Command
until they have 18 months experience.

One of the problems that occurred in 1988, was that the former TIB Officers
who participated in the Police bridging course were not utilised in an area
that they had previously specialised in and just ended up as new general
duty police recruits and the Police ended up not providing the support to
the railways they'd promised. Hence, the private security guards. Lets hope
this doesn't happen again.
