Hi Rod, due to complications involving current very high rentals for a house
(which I need for my dog), being on the pension, living with a friend with
most of my possessions (including my SignaLink!) in storage and the Qld
Houso having very very few places available (been on the list for over 8
years now), the webcam is not likely to be up again any time soon. sorry
about that, but currently not even on HF yet.

Having acquired a small caravan parked at another friend's place, radio is
on the list for things to get going.

Might as well Brad, looks like it's going to be a while before I'm back on
SSTV. I promise I'll pop up here and let all know when I'm back in business.
The site itself will remain up, Although I may change the message, as they
say in advertising, watch this space.

Further to that, Brad, might as well remove vk4ari as well. He won't be
returning to sstv, he's got out of Amateur radio altogether now, and sold
all his radios.

The technical aspect has diminished. The bands are now populated
by former CB'ers complete with their lingo.
Over here in Perth it is not uncommon to hear "on the side listening"
"on the side" "back" "go ahead" .... the rant goes on.

Bring back the days of solid technical discussion and no CB lingo.

It might be a bit more than that, and is to some extent unavoidable. It was
once a near miracle that old Fred could with his own bare hands build a
transmitter (possibly design it, too) and speak around the globe from the
shack in his own back garden. But in these days of cheap easy communication
by Net, phone, fax and so on it is no loger a miracle. There is precious
litle construction or technical discussion. In my opinion the beginning of
the end was repeaters, then 'black boxes' and ready built stations. I for
one will probably sell my nearly new FT2000 soon as the thrill has simply
gone. It's not all newcomers either. Here in NSW we have a number of old
buffers on 80m (I am an 'older person' too, BTW) who care nothing for
callsigns or licence conditions and who grumble ceaselessly about the
passing of the good old days. Maybe the time for amateur radio as we knew it
has simply passed...

Jesus thats on the money,, I LOVE the black boxes, beautifully designed and
very appealing to the eye.Im now trying to revive my love for the hobby
using Psk and SSTV . Ive already had 30 years of CW and fone.

Its NO LONGER thrilling to hear your call coming back through the hash now
that ive been spoiled by perfect comms via the net.
Cheers Rod

I've been licensed for 32 years, and I started out in the mid 70's as a
pirate on CB!

Worked almost 300 countries on HF fone, mostly 40m and 10m (I follow the
sunspot cycles). Worked all 50 US states on 40m fone. So I have listened to
my fair share of S9 static over the years. :)

On the technical side I built my own tower, antennas, and HF amp.

I don't think I've been a bad operator, at least I know how and when to put
in my callsign and I don't swear! Though I did once get pinged many years
ago by the RI's for "passing third party traffic", for passing on a personal
message from my brother to my now wife. Like me she started off as CB
pirate, and she has been a proud "Novice" call for 32 years.

I think you're right Moi. Since relocating last year, I still havent put
up any of my 'serious' antennas and I don't seem to find the time
anymore to get on air (which I always would have no matter what in the
past), or even bother to listen to anything.

I guess that says something about my level of enthusiasm these days.
Possibly the ease of communication these days has diminished the
'thrill' for me somewhat - even though I still appreciate the
distinction between the Internet, mobile phones and the art of working
the bands, DXing, etc.

Like you, the Icom 756 I bought last year has probably only seen a few
hours use - unthinkable that I'd do that say, 10 years ago...

Hi!

I guess I am kind of surprised by some of the comments made on AR not
being as good as it use to be etc.

I for one experiment on quite a few radio projects. I dont of course
talk to many people, I guess due to the nature of what I am doing! (And
I sound funny over here!) Maybe I just dont conform to what the
mainstream amateur believes it is all about!

I'll have to mention something that irritates though. I tend to stay
away from HF PSK etc modes because most seems to still be interested in
QSL cards and not much else... I also dont know why there is an
insistance to run PSK on low HF. Is that prevalent in VK too? (PSK gets
badly hacked about by phase changes on 160/80/40)

I am still working on low power 2m SSB mobile/data stuff. The old IC202S
is in the house for a stability improvement exercise (50Hz heat drift
over 10 minutes isnt acceptable!) and I have repaired tha laptop ready
to TX from the car. Hoping for 50-100km range from 1W at 1CPS type rates.

Also had a guy in Sydney XWindows to my PC over here and watch his own
1W signal on a waterfall display on 30m..

VB - Victoria Bitter?

As in Visual Basic? Dont think so... I have been posting for many years
though. Use to run the PBBS/gateway (packet) up in Armidale back in 1993
or so.

Was also very active in Netware NG's since I use to run it as a
sysadmin. More or less stick to Linux and a few AR groups nowadays.
