Subject: Former PM ignored by Gillard?
"FORMER prime minister Paul Keating has accused the federal government
of eroding Australia's foreign policy influence by clinging to the
United States alliance at the expense of relations with key Asian
neighbours.
        ...
'More latterly, our respect for the foreign policy objectives of the US
has superimposed itself on what should otherwise be the foreign policy
objectives of Australia'"

If the ALP were not so dysfunctional it's current leader would consult
the former PM and he would not feel like he has to broadcast his criticism.

Clearly Gillard doesn't see any need to consult a former PM on foreign
policy matters as she feels confident that she can totally stuff it up
herself.

I mean, why not consider selling live pigs to Indonesia (rotfl), to
replace the cattle trade which she destroyed without consultation?

Why would she want to?

Why would she want to consult with Keating or Hawke or Howard et al?

The live cattle trade to Indonesia is going well

# Yes, something in that.  But has the "invasion" of Iraq and Afghanistan
achieved all that much - in neither case did the locals invite in Western
forces.
Trouble is, the Yanks have never conceded they were actually defeated in
Vietnam.
If only they had stayed longer, they would have won...etc.  Maybe.
But no nation likes foreigners on its territory, which partly explains
sudden outbursts of Green-on-Blue attacks.
Even now, the imminent withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan is not on the
basis of claiming full victory, but only that the country is sufficiently
Westernised to survive a resurgent Taliban.  Time will tell.
As for Australia, the Yanks found our continent a convenient base for
the push north against the Japs.  Now we are possibly an expendable forward
outpost, for containment of China.  If war comes to our region, the USA
mainland is a long way away, but we will be right in the centre of things.
So, good luck!

Once we/nato go the Taliban will move back into power except maybe for the
major cities :-(

Agree we are expendable to the Yanks if the shit hits the fan. Maybe we need
a nuclear deterrent

No-one is able to corroborate Windsor's claim and Tony Abbott of course
denies it. Moreover there are no instances of any similar claims from
anyone with integrity.

Moreover, Windsor's credibility is in question - but in his case there
are grounds for suspicion. Whilst opposing CSG, Windsor sold his family
farm to Werris Creek Coal for three ties the going price in the area:

"Mr Windsor, who has long been critical of mining in the nearby fertile
Liverpool Plains because of its impact on underlying ground water,
yesterday repeated his claim that the mining of that property was
legitimate because it was 'completely different country'.
        ...
When asked about the differences in the sale prices between his property
and those of his neighbours, he said, 'I think we should terminate this
conversation'.

'You listen to me pal, you mind your own business, it's my family's
business. If you want to make up some bullshit story, go for your life,
I don't care', he said before hanging up.

Mr Windsor has accused the Nationals of running a smear campaign against
him after the sale of his farm to Werris Creek became public in February".

Sounds remarkably like Julia Gillard with her 'smear campaign' defence
and mock apoplexy.

Yes, really.

In parliament, he used the word 'except sell'. Earlier he quoted Abbott
as saying 'won't sell'. If you were quoting someone literally you would
use the exact words, from memory.

You started this part of the thread saying that Abbott said he *would*
