ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) - Former Guantanamo prisoner David Hicks remains a
terror threat, a magistrate said Friday as he ordered restrictions on his
movements after he is released from an Australian prison next week.
Hicks, a former kangaroo skinner who was convicted of supporting al-Qaida at
a U.S. military tribunal after being captured in 2001 in Afghanistan, will
be subject to a midnight-to-dawn curfew and have to report to police three
times a week under the order.

``I'm satisfied that coupled with the defendant's views expressed and his
capability and training ... that the defendant is a risk of taking part in a
terrorist act,'' Federal Magistrate Warren Donald said.

Hicks is due to be released on Dec. 29 from the Yatala high security prison
in the southern city of Adelaide, after completing a seven-year prison
sentence struck after a plea deal with U.S. authorities that resulted in him
being returned home from Guantanamo.

The father of two was captured in December 2001 by the U.S.-backed Northern
Alliance in Afghanistan, where he had been fighting with the Taliban, and
spent more than five years at Guantanamo Bay before being tried.

A U.S. military commission at Guantanamo sentenced Hicks, a Muslim convert,
in March to seven years in prison, with all but nine months being suspended
after he pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorism.

Under a plea bargain, Hicks was returned to Australia to serve the remainder
of his sentence.

Hicks has admitted he attended al-Qaida training camps in Pakistan, and
police prosecutors who sought the control order said evidence showed Hicks
undertook ``substantial training'' in basic arms and combat, guerrilla
warfare and advanced marksmanship from al-Qaida and the Pakistani terror
group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba.

On Thursday, police lawyer Andrew Berger quoted letters sent in 2001 by
Hicks to his family in which he said he had met al-Qaida leader Osama bin
Laden 20 times and described him as a ``lovely brother.''

Hicks' lawyers said he did not object to being the subject of a control
order, but that he believed some of the conditions were too onerous.

Hicks' father, Terry, has said his son wants to forget about his recent past
and get on with his life by enrolling in university.

He's white. he probably became an arselifting camel humper under
Malcum Fabian's influence. They're both from Adelaide after all.

Anyway, he might be extradited to India soon where he's sure to be
hung.

Yes, he should, shouldn't he? But he's too much of a coward to leave
Adelaide.

He does not sound like he was ever a "terrorist" threat, but was an
idealist working as a moslem foot soldier for the Taliban, and would in
fact have been an Australian and American "hero" if the CIA funded/
created Taliban had still been fighting the Russians... Such is the
hypocrisy of international politics... They are the real "terrorists"
the western (OK... not just western... but probably all...)
governments... funding armies in countries they want to overthrow the
rulers of... causing extra death and terror in already difficult
conditions...

Look at the current Afghan rulers... the main story is the two western
advisors they expelled for meeting the Taliban, but the press has not
covered the two "native?" Afghan politicians recently caught leaving the
country with over 10 million US dollars in cash... who after arrest were
actually allowed to leave Afghanistan to the west carrying all that
cash...

One might ask where in such a cash poor country did these two slimeball
pro western puppets get over $10 million in cash? something to do with
opium perhaps? that has increased 1000 fold+ since we invaded the place,
or just plain bribery?

Afghanistan has gone from an idealistic country to a country of bribery
and corruption, in my opinion it has taken a big step back from the level
of fairness under the taliban, and is a lot worse than it would have been
if instead of us spending several billion on bombing/shooting and
generally killing the taliban we had worked with them.

Lets face it, as the expulsion just proved, we are now trying to work
with the taliban... after all that waste of money and weapons and
poisoning of yet another country with DU and quite possibly real low
yield nuclear weapon attacks on some of the caves which the yanks knew
would be masked by all the DU fallout.....

While they deny it, it may be used in bunker buster bombs, but also they
include other uraniums, and as I said it is suspected they used low yield
nuclear bunker busters in afgahanistan.

as far as I am aware the taliban almost completely eradicated afghan
opium production...

You need to go back 8 or 9 years ago when David Hicks planned to go to
Afghanistn , and read what was being said about the Taliban then

Even Bhutto actually saw them as the solution , not the problem

Many people openly supported the Taliban and the Muslims fighting in
Afghanistan

They were funded by USa

The western media were running glowing heroic stories about the
Taliban fighters as HEROES

I still have the articles and colour photos , produced by USA to
attract young Muslims like David Hicks to train as defenders of the
faith in Afghanistan

Hicks only mistake was to believe the USA propaganda

I still have the glowing articles written in the National geographic
magazine, printed in USA during the 1990s, , Taliban were HEROES

Bhutto actually provided FAR FAR FAR more support than Hicks ever
could

Why is she a HERO ?????

Why was she not charged with providing material support like David
Hicks was ,
======================================================
Bhutto Policy on Taliban

The Taliban took power in Kabul in September 1996. It was during
Bhutto's rule that the Taliban gained prominence in Afghanistan. She
viewed the Taliban as a group that could stabilize Afghanistan and
enable trade access to the Central Asian republics, according to
author Stephen Coll.[13] He claims that her government provided
military and financial support for the Taliban, even sending a small
unit of the Pakistani army into Afghanistan.

More recently, she took an anti-Taliban stance, and condemned
terrorist acts committed by the Taliban and their supporters.

David Hicks is the only Australian soldier to fight on the side of
truth and justice in Afghanistan or Iraq

Will he one day be PM

Like Mandella , or like Ghandi , once he recovers from the 6 years
in christian and jewish torture chambers

We need leaders like David Hicks who can see who the real terrorists
are and have the guts to have a go

Why not join the David Hicks Fan Club , and see if we can get him
elected as PM
