Just because he won one in the wet doesn't mean he isn't competitive in
the dry. He's one of only 4 riders in the championship to have scored
points in all 5 races so far. It was dry race in Turkey in round 3 and
he clocked the fastest race laptime (on the 2nd last lap) and scored
points despite being involved in the first lap accident and having to
pick up his bike and play catch-up for the entire race. I know it's a
'what-if' but he'd probably be challenging Rossi for 2nd place in the
championship now if he hadn't been knocked off his bike in Turkey.

No shit Mr Honda.

In other news, brand new blackbirds going for $12,990 on road. There

Only a short term price spike, till they're sold out. Then they'll
become a collectors item and scarcity will see market forces drive the
2nd hand price to a realistic level.

Vermuelen got the fastest race lap at Turkey in the dry.
Hopkins qualified in pole position at le Mans in the dry.

Just about everywhere.. if there are still stock left. Honda announced
a few weeks ago the discontinuation of the CBR1100XX and most dealers
pretty much marked them down to $13k ride away.

In fact more to the point, results in the wet are a lot more telling
of rider ability and bike setup outside of the pure HP part. Hence I
think those saying Stoner is only winning because he has more ponies
should be shutting up about now.

Bloody good race, and vermeulen rode it well. If they can squeeze a
couple more ponies out of the suzuki motor he'll be a championship
contender (although i think Hopkins is more likely to finish ahead of
him).

Yeah, but the same could probably be said for Pedrosa who has also had
a bit of a bad run of luck with being caught up in 1st lap crashes.

The price of $13k is over 5 grand off list price. If I can find one I'm buying

Except it costs three times as much for the same performance and less
reliability. I see Ducati have copied Fireblade styling for their
1098. Maybe they finally got the message about what an ugly piece of
shit the 999 was :)

The list price has always been $18500+ORC but noone has ever paid more
than $16K ride away. One of the blokes on the blackbird forum has a
receipt from the original owner of his bike and he had paid $16k ride
away back in 1998. They were a good mover for Honda.. The VTR1000 has
been discontinued too.. be interesting to see what they replace them with.

Considering where they are now compared to where they have been, I'm sure
the whole camp is stoked.
Both riders have had a sniff are are sure to benefit from it.
The comments I'm waiting to see will be about Rossi; in particular his
continuation of making errors - most unusual. This race must have been his
worst in this regard. The question need be put: has he been Gibbernauised?

Oh yeah, my bad, all those yanks look the same to me... though a quick
glance at the results sees that Hopkins has not qualified lower than 7th
so far this year -all in the dry- once on the front row and thrice on
the 2nd row, so speed for the Suzuki in the dry is obviously not a
problem.

I must say I'm getting a new respect for Monkey-boy.
The way he was clearly outclassed in China but just kept coming back and
attacking Stoner lap after lap was far gutsier than I gave him credit for.
I think all of his running wide at the corners is just symptomatic of how
late he's braking trying to overtake faster bikes.

He never seemed to have this problem when he first went to Yamaha. What
has changed? Is his bike really that much slower than the other bikes?
He's appeared to crack a couple of times this season.. start well then
slip back down the order as the race progresses. Are they psyching him

(as far as I can recall) I'd have to give him the benefit of the doubt and

HaHaHonda has been into a servo for petrol.

> They're beating Ducati in SBK, and british SBK :)

Does SBK really count? Its rules are biased in favor of the V twins.
Ducati's crap about expense, etc. doesn't count, particularly when it's
always been at the pointy end of the field, either through capacity
advantage or being one of the few factory back teams out there.

If Ducati has to "motogp" its engines in order to compete, then really
what's the point of having a production based series where the bikes
being raced aren't available to the public, and worse, not even
available to non-factory teams?

At least I can be assured that if I owned a GSXR-1000 that it's closer
in spec to Biaggi's than what my mate's old 996 was to Foggy's bike back
then.

Interesing? I'm DYING to see what they're being replaced with. My tips
are on some MotoGP derivative. A V5 1100, or V2 1200 with a race
derivative for WSBs, perhaps?

The drawback of becoming a commodity bike, with regular (and closely
spaced) new models.

So there's lots of them about, and the people who buy them can get the
latest new one if they want, with credit cheap why buy 2nd hand?
Especially something that someone's probably thrashed?

So that's what, a bit over 40% depreciation. Presumably because a new
model (rather than a new paint job) came out. What's the percentage
on a top line Japanese sportbike after 2 years when a new model rather
than a new paint and a few extras comes out?

This is HONDA you're talking about!
Sure it'll be marketed as being "MotoGP derived" and it'll be painted in
similar stripes (and have lots of side-by-side photos with MotoGP bikes) but
it'll just be another lowest-common-denominator, tick the boxes in the
cheapest way possible, old-hat-in-12-months, two-wheeled Toyota.

True.

I wonder what the value of the 999 will be like once the 1098 starts
arriving here in greater numbers. Being considerably cheaper and
supposedly a hugely better bike, chances are that the 999 and earlier
models will become real bargains for those Ducati-wannabe-owners out
there.

Maybe Hatz will finally be able to afford one (or any bike, for that
matter)...

Probably worse, given that there's heaps of them about, and their
relatively cheap to start with.

Thing is, that's not the issue here. Rather, Hatz made the somewhat
silly comment about Ducatis holding their value. No-one is arguing that
say, Honda CBR1000RRs are good "investments" or whatever.

Me neither. I always expect to "give" my bikes away when I flog 'em.
Just wondering if my Blackbird will suddenly become a "collector's item"
now that Honda has stopped making them, and that mine's the first of the
EFI models...

Yes, no bike is guaranteed to hold value because circumstances can
change.

Harleys did for a long time because of small supply. When supply
increased, values dropped. Also, there are more cruisers out there,
and some of them are very good indeed in looks and go. Fewer folk are
into "must be a Harley" than some sellers suppose.

My 650 Pantah also benefitted from small numbers. If you wanted a
Pantah then the 650s were the best. When the red bikes started
arriving the 650 got the "no decent bevels left but I won't demean
myself with one of these new beltheads" guys, who couldn't come at the
much older and slower 500. 650s are still worth more than 600s, but
how long Pantahs of any kind will be saleable now parts are such a
bastard is anyone's guess.

Plenty of bevel bits from the aftermarket, older belts not so.

I just solve the resale problem by not selling. Easy!

The other Japs certainly do; but to a lesser extent.
Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki have all released models with cutting edge
innovation (for mass-production) in the past few decades. Thinks like
6-speed gearboxes, liquid-cooling, CDI, EFI, alloy beam frames, exhaust
power-valves, mono-shock rear suspension, USD front suspension, radial brake
callipers etc etc....
Not Honda though.
Honda always does things the cheapest way it can get away with until it's
absolutely forced to keep up.

Possibly not lately. But they did, for example, do the V4 first.
For a while they tended to build odd bikes, CX500 anyone? :)

[Shrug] Yeah I s'pose so.
It's really just a refinement (and doubling) of Yamaha's then-innovative
XZ550 though.

Yeah; you've got me on the CX.
Nothing innovative or cutting-edge but a genuinely "new" concept.
It was also an example of some of the most horrid cheapo manufacturing with
it's Comstar wheels and it's pressed-metal frame.

A perfect example of late-to-arrive,
only-just-as-good-as-the-current-opposition and bereft-of-innovation (as
well as pretend-it's-GP-derived!) Hondaism!

Dropped compared to the value they used to hold perhaps, but they still
hold their value better than most other bikes.

Have you seen any 5 year old big twin harley's that are worth half of
new price with only 30,000kms on them?

I haven't... but I've seen lots of sport japanese made bikes that have
depreciated by 50% in 5 years. [1]

So compare like with like already!

Sportbikes of any kind depreciate quickly because their defining
parameters are, these days, overtaken quickly. And they are
considered to wear out more quickly.

Be more interesting to see what the depreciation is on the big
Hogalikes. Such as the whopping great Triumph.

That like saying a twin is like a double single Clem. And a Guzzi is like
90ยบ between a Triumph Bonny and a BMW R69.

They did make Wheels Bike of the Year, before they got into the dealers, and
they took the prize for heaviest 500 cc bike of the century, except maybe
for the Suzuki RE5, but nobody really knew what size it was. I nearly bought
one (the Suzuki, that is, not the maggot).

That's about leading edge stuff. People who buy leading edge stuff don't
want it five years old, whereas a touring person would snap up an R69 faster
than a fortune cookie.

It could be worse, check the depreciation on a Magna in the first year, or a
Jag!

On the other hand, ain't many early 80s bikes on the road, and those
that are all tend to be bloody maggots!

Both the RE5 and the CX were 70s bikes Zebee. But yes, I agree.

eh? 1982 was the date I had in my head for the CX, but firther
thinking produces 1978.

So all the more kudos to them then! Only other 70s bikes I see
regularly are Guzzis :)

"Voted Two Wheel magazine's "Bike of the Year" in 1978, the CX500 started an
eight-year production run of one of Honda's most innovative machines".

RE5 was back in 74.

Why? Most of the Japanese bikes sales are sports bikes. Most of the HD
sales are cruisers.

You don't think it's valid to compare depreciation rates between top
selling bikes?

Sorry but I do :)

In fact It would be interesting to see a depreciation chart for the best
10 selling bikes... I suspect the dirt bikes would do really well!

Not this touring person LOL

Now if you made it an R90S....

I bought a 380 new (well unused but previous years stock). Cost me $26k
on the road with tinted windows and towbar and climate control air-con.

After 10 years it'll be lucky to be worth $5000.

My sister bought a new V series Omega commodore with a couple of
options, cost her $40k. After 10 years it'll be lucky to be worth about
$8000.

Who's got more depreciation? [1]

TCO and depreciation are two entirely different things. I'll wager that TCO
on a new bus is a great deal more than on your 380, but which depreciates
faster?

I never said they weren't two entirely different things (nor do I
believe I implied they weren't).

My point was that people should worry more about TCO and less about
depreciation as such...

And the bus depreciates faster BTW (assuming that depreciation in
measured in $ depreciated), otherwise the 380 would (if you measure in
%) [lies, damn lies & statistics]

No one forces a seller to lose that much money on a bike sale.

Yep. A bike is only worth as much as what a buyer is willing to pay for
it. In the case of this fellow's Strada, what he sold it for was all
that he could get for it. It was on the market for some time.
