I want to paint the mirror backs and pillion handles on the ninja.

What sort of paint is going to finish nicely on these types of
surfaces??

Will there need to be some piece preparation first like wet/dry
sanding involved?

thanx

Yes, lots of surface preparation!! Get all cracks welding, fill all the gaps
with a good putty and sand the area starting with coarse (grit 80) then all
the way down to very very fine (grit 1000). Wet sanding is the best. Go to a
good auto paint supplier, they should have the color charts for most bikes
(jap anyway), get the best paint you can afford (ie two-pac (sp?)). Dont
spray with a aerosol can, its crap. If you dont have the setup to spray
properly..dont bother. pay someone to do it!

Have you trawled around the web for them?
Of all the accessory sites in the US and Europe, some are bound to
lead to someone who makes/supplies colour-coded mirrors and
grabhandles...

Alternately, I'd say don't do it to the nice, shiny, new, 2001 parts.
See if a wrecker's got some scratched ones; they're the same on the
G-model 6R, yeh? Get those and get them painted. Leaves you with a set
of pristine bits to put back on the bike once the time comes to
sell...

Otherwise, Murphy says your ad in the Trading Post'll probably attract
every hopeful ZX6 owner who dry-heaves at the notion of colour-coded
mirrors...

Just painted a lower fairing bit on the RF. I got they guys at my work to
do a colour match by eye with the piece I had broken and they did a spot on
job - exact match.

The steps they told me were - and this worked very well considering this was
my first spray job...

Sand area to make a little rough.
Wash area with a prep wash such as K&H Wax and Grease remover.
Apply a coat of plastic primer.
Wait 25 minutes and apply 2nd coat of plastic primer
Wait 45 minutes and do your first coat of acrylic colour
lightly sand back (once dry) with a 1500 or 2000 grade wet and dry sandpaper
wipe area with prepwash and clean cloth
Second coat - when dry sand again lightly with 2000
prepwash
third coat (if wanted/needed) sand etc
prepwash
Go the clearcoat (2 coats) with 2000 sanding after the first
Finish with a rubbing compound (polish) and wax to bring high gloss finish

Hope this helps...

S&K>Dont spray with a aerosol can, its crap.

absolute rubbish.....
if used properly as they should be, spraycans do an excellent job. I have
seen a whole car done with spraycans (guy was a tosser but he could paint)
and it looked fine. I'm sure for 2 mirrors and other bits a spraycan will
be just right. Anyone want to argue the point then come over and have a
look at my lower fairing piece that I painted with a colour matched can of
acrylic.

S&K>Go to a good auto paint supplier, they should have the color charts for
most bikes

There is no 'colour chart' for bikes, just as there are no colour codes on
bikes (unlike all cars). I have the latest PPG colour charts at work and
even though you can look up a bike, you can't get a formula for making the
paint tint.

S&K>get the best paint you can afford (ie two-pac

You cannot buy proper 2-pac over the counter if you don't run a spray
painting shop because you need a spray booth and respirator equipment to be
able to use it. The only stuff you can get is an ISO free 2-pac. If you
are not an experienced sprayer then acrylic will be a lot easier (and more
forgiving) to use.

yes there is, it's under the seat, unless removed. you will have a model
type, and colour code.

most paint manuf. will accept this code. AFAIK, anyway. the code means
something in paint speak

We can test the theory. There is no paint code of any description under my
seat. If anyone finds one let me know what it is and I'll look it up at
work and give you the name of the colour and what it is available in
(Acrylic, Fast-Dry Enamel, ISO free 2-pac).

sorry, I haven't had a chance to look under the VFR's seat, but I remember
giving the code off the Bandit to a Custom Cycles shop, the owner of the
shop painted his HD the same colour.

could you try this out?? would be interesting to find out......anyone got
the sticker details? I'll check the VFR this W/E (Seat cowl Bolted on)
